Automate processing units, low-density structures and rocket fuel before the silo finishes researching.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Factorio servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Once the silo is ready, launch exactly one space-platform starter pack, build a small but functional platform, and automate its requests. Your first planet should match your bottleneck: Vulcanus for metallurgy and bulk metals, Fulgora for recycling and electromagnetic technology, or Gleba for biological production. Aquilo is a later destination because it demands heat, cryogenic infrastructure and dependable interplanetary logistics.

What the rush actually requires
A space rush is not a race to place the silo as soon as possible. It is a race to remove the three delays that stop the first launch: science production, rocket-input production and platform logistics. The official Factorio Wiki lists the following research gate for the Space Age rocket silo:
| Science pack | Required amount | What it means for your base |
|---|---|---|
| Automation | 1,000 | Keep early assemblers supplied while expanding iron, copper and circuit production. |
| Logistics | 1,000 | Maintain belt, inserter and robot-support production instead of treating logistics science as a one-off batch. |
| Chemical | 1,000 | Scale oil processing, plastics, sulfur-related production and the power needed by chemical plants. |
Only these three packs are named in the silo requirement. Military, production and utility detours can improve survival or construction, but they do not replace the threshold. Research them when a specific threat or factory bottleneck demands them, not because they are part of a generic technology checklist.

Space Age is a large progression layer: the 2024 official wiki summary lists 29 achievements, 30 intermediate products, 22 buildings, five science packs, five weapons, four planets and two enemy types. That breadth is why a focused opening matters. You are not trying to prebuild every expansion system before leaving Nauvis; you are establishing the minimum supply chain that can support a platform and a first planetary objective.
1. Shape Nauvis around the silo sciences
Start with a compact, expandable core
Place the early smelting, circuit and science lines close enough that you can defend and extend them, but leave room for oil, chemical plants and rocket-input assemblers. A compact core shortens belts and robot travel during the rush. It also makes it easier to identify the exact line that is starving a science pack.
Run automation, logistics and chemical science continuously as soon as each recipe becomes available. A warehouse of finished packs is less useful than a science line that keeps consuming ingredients while you build. When one pack backs up, redirect the surplus to the next research queue rather than stopping the entire laboratory block.
Scale the resource chains that feed all three packs
- Iron and copper: expand smelting before circuits become the limiting step. Circuits, belts, inserters, assemblers and chemical infrastructure all compete for these plates.
- Oil processing: establish a stable crude-oil supply and enough chemical-plant capacity for the chemical-science ingredients and plastics used by advanced components.
- Electronic circuits: build more copper-cable and circuit capacity than the first science assemblers appear to need. Circuit shortages propagate into inserters, assemblers, modules and processing units.
- Steel and concrete: produce them continuously once the recipes are available. They are construction bottlenecks when you expand smelting, defenses and the silo area at the same time.
- Low-density structures: dedicate assemblers and a steady copper, steel and plastic feed to them before the silo research completes.
Use belts, trains or logistic robots according to the scale of your existing base; the rush does not require one transport style. What matters is that each science line and rocket-input line has a visible, refillable source rather than a manually loaded chest.
2. Research the silo at the first safe threshold
Queue the rocket-silo research as soon as all three science counters can reach 1,000 without collapsing your factory. Do not wait for every optional Nauvis technology. A useful test is whether your base can continue making the three packs while you spend time on construction, defenses and rocket materials.
What to postpone
- Large decorative rebuilds that do not increase plate, circuit, oil or science throughput.
- Optional weapons or military upgrades that are not needed for the enemies currently attacking your perimeter.
- Planet-specific preparation before you have a working silo and platform supply chain.
- Extra platform production before you know which planet will solve your current bottleneck.
What not to postpone
- Power generation and fuel handling; an intermittent grid can stop oil processing and chemical science at the worst moment.
- Defense around mining, oil and the science block. A destroyed pump or belt can cost more time than a small defensive investment.
- Assemblers for processing units, low-density structures and rocket fuel. These are the direct inputs to every rocket part.
3. Make the first rocket economically predictable
In Space Age, one rocket uses 50 rocket parts. Each part consumes one processing unit, one low-density structure and one rocket fuel, so a complete rocket requires 50 of each input. Treat that as a recurring production obligation, not a final crafting project.

| Rocket component | Consumption per rocket | Rush implication |
|---|---|---|
| Processing unit | 50 | Protect circuit, plastic and advanced-circuit throughput; a shortfall here often reflects an upstream copper or oil problem. |
| Low-density structure | 50 | Keep copper, steel and plastic flowing and avoid hand-crafting the final batch. |
| Rocket fuel | 50 | Reserve chemical-plant capacity and fuel ingredients so rocket production does not steal all fuel from vehicles or power systems. |
Keep these outputs in provider chests or another logistic-network source near the silo. Buffering a modest amount protects the launch cycle from short interruptions, while continuous assemblers refill the buffer. The official wiki identifies the silo as a strong target for productivity modules where your available module and power budget support them; productivity reduces the raw material consumed for the same output, but it also increases machine power demand and may require more speed or beacon capacity.
Build the silo area for robots
Give the silo a clear supply route and enough space for inserters, chests and construction robots. You want to be able to inspect each rocket ingredient independently. If all three ingredients share one congested belt, the silo can appear idle even though one material is abundant.
Enable automatic silo requests once the logistic network is ready. Robots can then move processing units, low-density structures and rocket fuel into the silo’s request slots and fill rockets without hand-carrying. Check that the request sources are inside the same network and that the network has charging capacity; a robot fleet that spends its time waiting for power is effectively a missing belt.
4. Launch the first platform starter pack
The silo creates a new platform when its payload is exactly one space-platform starter pack. Make that first launch deliberately: confirm the starter pack is the payload, allow the rocket to complete, and use the resulting platform as your transport and construction base.

- Platform hub: the control point for requests, storage and platform operations.
- Connected foundation: a continuous buildable surface linking the hub to every required machine. Disconnected pieces do not provide a usable production area.
- Asteroid collectors: gather passing asteroids while the platform travels.
- Asteroid crushers: process collected material into the items needed by the platform’s systems.
- Ammunition production: convert available materials into ammunition before entering dangerous routes.
- Defenses: protect collectors, crushers and the hub; losing one machine can interrupt the entire trip.
- Thruster: supplies propulsion so the platform can travel between Nauvis and another planet.
Add storage and additional production only when a request or operating problem justifies the footprint. A large first platform consumes more launch materials and creates more surfaces that need protection. A compact platform is easier to repair, rebalance and understand.
Why the platform is more than a vehicle
The official Space Age description calls space platforms “flying factories that act as the means of transportation between planets.” That distinction changes your design priorities. The platform is both a transport hub and a production line: it gathers asteroids, crushes them, makes ammunition, survives travel and carries cargo. Every extra machine therefore has a weight in space, a power or input requirement and a defensive consequence.
5. Automate platform requests and surface deliveries
Platform-to-surface flow
Use the platform hub to request the items you want delivered to a planet. When the platform has the requested cargo and the destination is ready to receive it, the cargo can be dropped in a pod. A cargo landing pad gives predictable delivery to a designated location; without one, a drop can land randomly near the planet’s spawn area. Put the landing pad beside the receiving belts, chests or trains so a successful delivery does not create a new manual-hauling task.
Surface-to-orbit flow
On Nauvis, enable silo logistic requests. The platform’s requests can trigger launches, while logistic robots fill the silo from the network. This turns the loop into a repeatable chain:
- The platform hub requests a defined item or quantity.
- The Nauvis logistic network supplies the requested cargo to the silo.
- The silo loads the rocket and launches when its payload condition is met.
- The platform receives the cargo and continues its route or fulfills the hub request.
Manual loading can support mixed payloads, but it is not an automated solution. Use it to recover from a shortage, test a new request or send an unusual one-off load; then convert the successful load into a repeatable request before expanding your planetary industry.
Diagnose a launch that never happens
- The platform request is empty: verify the requested item is produced on the source surface or platform and that the quantity is achievable.
- The silo has no ingredients: inspect each rocket-input assembler and the logistic-network coverage of its provider chest.
- Robots carry items slowly: add charging coverage or reduce competing requests; robots without energy cannot sustain the launch rate.
- The rocket is loaded but waits: check the launch condition and ensure the payload matches the platform request rather than relying on a partially filled mixed load.
- The cargo arrives unpredictably: place and connect a cargo landing pad at the intended receiving site.
6. Choose the first planet by payoff, not habit
There is no authoritative average rush time, minimum launch count or universally optimal planet order. The right first destination depends on what your Nauvis factory lacks and how much operational complexity you are ready to manage.
| Planet | Main payoff | Operational pressure | Prioritize it when… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vulcanus | Lava-based iron and copper plus tungsten metallurgy | Volcanic terrain and local defense | You need to accelerate heavy industry and high-throughput metal production. |
| Fulgora | Scrap recycling, lightning power and holmium technology | Lightning storms and sparse conventional resources | You want to turn ruins and scrap into advanced components and can manage intermittent conditions. |
| Gleba | Agriculture and biochemical production | Spoilage and biological threats | You are prepared to move perishable products quickly and defend a biological production site. |
| Aquilo | Cryogenic and fusion technology | Extreme cold, heat requirements and weak solar support | You already have dependable interplanetary supply and are deliberately moving toward the endgame platform route. |
Vulcanus: the heavy-industry choice
Choose Vulcanus when metal throughput is the constraint. Its lava-based iron and copper and tungsten metallurgy can accelerate the industrial side of your factory. Plan the landing area and defenses before unloading the first cargo: volcanic terrain changes where you can build, and local attacks can interrupt a new outpost before its metallurgy is productive.
Send construction materials, ammunition and enough rocket cargo to establish a self-sustaining receiving area. Keep the first Vulcanus build focused on the metal chain that solves your stated bottleneck; importing every Nauvis product defeats the reason for choosing the planet.
Fulgora: the recycling and electromagnetic choice
Fulgora is suited to a factory that wants scrap recycling, lightning power and holmium technology. Its resource pattern is sparse compared with a conventional mining site, so design around collection, sorting and recycling rather than assuming a large ore field will carry the base.
Lightning storms are an operating condition, not merely a combat problem. Protect the landing pad, hub and recycling line, and provide storage so a storm or temporary interruption does not stop every downstream assembler. The payoff is access to advanced components through a recycling-centered production model.
Gleba: the biological choice
Gleba unlocks agriculture and biochemical production, but spoilage changes how you schedule the factory. Build the receiving, processing and consumption stages close enough that products do not sit unused while they age. Keep requests sized to the rate at which your science or production lines consume them.

Biological threats add a defense requirement on top of the logistics problem. Establish a protected landing zone first, then expand the biological chain in small increments. If spoilage is causing losses, increase consumption and transport reliability before adding more production capacity.
Aquilo: postpone the cold planet
Aquilo is not a sensible first stop for a rush. The official description emphasizes heat pipes, ice platforms, cryogenic technology and fusion power. Those systems assume that your platform can deliver specialized cargo reliably and that the destination can maintain heat and power despite low solar support.
Use Aquilo as a later milestone after one or more inner planets have strengthened your production and logistics. Arrive with a tested platform request cycle, a cargo landing pad plan and enough heat and cryogenic infrastructure to keep the first build operating rather than merely alive.

7. A practical launch-to-planet checklist
Before researching the silo
- Automation, logistics and chemical science are running continuously.
- Iron, copper, circuits, steel, concrete and oil processing have room to expand.
- Rocket fuel, low-density structures and processing units have dedicated assemblers.
- Power and defenses can survive the construction period.
Before launching the starter pack
- The silo research has reached all three required science thresholds.
- The rocket-input lines can produce 50 processing units, 50 low-density structures and 50 rocket fuel for a complete rocket.
- Provider chests, robots and charging coverage reach the silo.
- The payload is exactly one space-platform starter pack.
Before leaving Nauvis
- The platform has a hub, connected foundation, asteroid collectors, crushers, ammunition, defenses and a thruster.
- Platform requests are defined and the silo is configured to receive them automatically.
- The destination has a cargo landing pad or a deliberate plan for handling a random landing.
- Your chosen planet’s main pressure—terrain, storms, spoilage or cold—has a concrete response.
8. Troubleshooting the most common rush failures
Science reaches the target too slowly
Find the first empty ingredient belt or stalled machine rather than adding laboratories blindly. If automation science is short, inspect iron and copper. If logistics science is short, inspect circuits and transport components. If chemical science is short, inspect oil, plastics and chemical-plant power. Expand the upstream chain that is actually idle before rebuilding the whole science block.
Rocket inputs compete with the rest of the factory
Processing units and low-density structures often draw from the same circuits, copper, steel and plastic needed elsewhere. Separate their assemblers from general-purpose production, give them clear provider chests and let the logistic network refill them. If power is the limiting factor, add generation before adding more speed; an overbuilt machine that browns out does not increase launch rate.
The first platform cannot survive travel
Inspect the platform’s defensive loop, not just its weapon count. Collectors and crushers must feed ammunition production, ammunition must reach defenses, and the hub must remain connected by foundation. If one stage is missing, the platform can enter a route with an apparently complete layout but no sustained protection.
The new planet becomes a manual outpost
Return to the request chain. Define what the destination needs, provide a landing pad, and make the source silo respond to the platform request. Manual mixed-payload loading is useful for recovery, but leaving it as the permanent method turns every expansion into a launch appointment.
9. How to judge whether you are truly rushing
A good rush is measured by uninterrupted progress, not by a promised number of minutes. If the science threshold is reached while the rocket-input lines are empty, the apparent early finish only moves the delay to the silo. If the platform launches without requests, defenses or a landing plan, the first planet becomes a repair project.
Use this decision rule: spend the next construction cycle on whichever item blocks the next irreversible step. Before the silo, that is one of the three sciences or their ingredients. After the silo, it is one of the three rocket inputs. After launch, it is platform survival and request automation. Once those are stable, choose the planet whose payoff removes your largest remaining factory constraint.
That sequence preserves flexibility. Vulcanus, Fulgora and Gleba each provide a distinct production route, while Aquilo remains a deliberate later target rather than a fragile opening gamble.
