The reliable way to protect a Nitrox world is to stop the server, copy the complete world folder from the server’s active Nitrox data directory, and keep dated copies outside the live directory. The exact location depends on the launch method. In Nitrox 1.8.1.0, the --data-path option defines the absolute directory for logs, cache, and save files. If you run the server in a container, the equivalent is usually the host-mounted Nitrox configuration or saves volume.

Do not rely on a single file, an in-launcher backup, or the fact that an update appears to support an older save. A clean copy made before an upgrade gives you a rollback, and a second copy on another disk or at another location protects against host failure and accidental deletion.

Where are Nitrox server saves?
Nitrox is a multiplayer modification for Subnautica. Its persistent worlds are stored by the Nitrox server, not in the ordinary single-player save location used by the game client. The folder you need is inside the server’s Nitrox data directory.
Use the configured --data-path first
In Nitrox 1.8.1.0, --data-path sets the absolute path where the server stores its logs, cache, and save files. Check the command, shortcut, service definition, script, or container entrypoint that starts your server. The value after --data-path is the authoritative starting point for a backup.

For example, a launch entry might contain a path such as --data-path "D:GamesNitroxData" or --data-path /srv/nitrox-data. Those are examples of syntax, not universal defaults. Use the path actually passed to your server.
When no explicit data path is configured
If the launch command has no --data-path, inspect the Nitrox configuration directory selected by the launcher or service. The directory can differ between Windows, Linux, a dedicated host, and a container image. Search the service account’s configuration area rather than the game installation directory.

Recognize the world folder
Inside the Nitrox saves area, each persistent world is represented by a named folder. In the example above, My World is the world directory. Back up that entire directory, along with the Nitrox server configuration and player/world data stored with it. Do not select only the most recently modified file that happens to be visible.
If you host multiple worlds, identify the name selected by the server or launcher and copy each world that you intend to preserve. A backup of the wrong named folder is indistinguishable from a missing backup when you try to restore it.

How to make a safe Nitrox backup
The following procedure works for a locally installed server, a remote Linux host, and a container deployment. Adapt the copy command to your operating system, but keep the order: identify the active path, stop the writer, copy the complete folder, verify it, and only then resume play.

- Open the server start command, service unit, launcher configuration, or container definition.
- Write down the value of
--data-path, if present. - Record the exact world folder name, including spaces and capitalization. For a sample world, that might be
My World. - If you cannot find the path, inspect the Nitrox configuration directory used by the account that runs the server and locate its
savesdirectory. Confirm the location by checking that its timestamps change after a normal, clean server shutdown.
Keep this information with the backup notes. It prevents a common recovery error: restoring a valid copy into a directory that the current server does not read.
2. Stop the server cleanly
Use the server’s normal stop command or close it through the launcher. Wait until the process has exited and the console is no longer writing log messages. A copy taken while the world is being written can contain an incomplete set of files or mismatched states.
Do not let players reconnect during the copy. If your host uses a service manager or container, stop that service or container rather than merely closing a remote terminal. Confirm that no Nitrox process still has the world open before proceeding.
3. Copy the complete world directory
Copy the named world folder as a folder, preserving its internal structure. Include the server configuration and player/world data that live alongside the world. The destination must be outside the live Nitrox data directory; otherwise an accidental cleanup or failed update can remove both the working copy and the backup.

On Linux or macOS, a straightforward example is:
cp -a "/srv/nitrox-data/saves/My World" "/srv/nitrox-backups/My World-2026-10-15-before-upgrade"Replace both paths with your actual data and backup locations. The -a option preserves the directory tree and metadata supported by that system.
On Windows, File Explorer can copy the complete folder, or an administrator can use a command such as:
robocopy "D:GamesNitroxDatasavesMy World" "E:NitroxBackupsMy World-2026-10-15-before-upgrade" /E /COPY:DATThese commands are examples, not Nitrox requirements. The important result is a complete, separately stored copy of the world directory.
For a container, copy the host-mounted configuration or saves volume. Copying a path that exists only inside a disposable container layer will not protect the world when that container is recreated. A community deployment mounts its configuration directory specifically so server data persists; use the equivalent persistent mount in your setup.

4. Verify the copy before restarting
- Confirm that the destination folder exists and contains the same world subfolders and files as the source.
- Check that the copy completed without permission, path-length, or disk-full errors.
- Compare the source and destination item counts, or use your file manager’s compare feature.
- Open the backup location and verify that the world name is visible exactly as expected.
- Record the date, Nitrox version, host, and reason for the backup in a text note beside the copy.
Leave the original live folder untouched until the backup has passed these checks. Only then restart the server and allow players to join.

5. Name copies so their purpose is obvious
A practical pattern is WorldName-YYYY-MM-DD-purpose, such as My World-2026-10-15-before-upgrade. Add a version suffix when useful, for example My World-2026-10-15-Nitrox-1.8.1.0. Keep the version and date in the same note as the copy; file timestamps can change when a directory is moved.
How often should you back up?
Make a manual backup before every Nitrox update, serializer change, server migration, or major building session. For an active community server, add a scheduled copy while retaining several historical versions. The schedule should run only after the server has been stopped cleanly, or use a maintenance window in which no files are being written.

A second disk protects against accidental overwrites, while an off-site copy protects against host loss, disk failure, theft, or a damaged filesystem. An off-site backup service can be useful for this category of data, but select one whose current terms, retention policy, encryption, and geography meet your requirements; no particular provider is required for Nitrox.
Manual, scheduled, and off-site backup methods compared
Choose a method according to how quickly you need to recover and how much history you can afford to keep. The essential requirement is an independent copy of the complete world folder.

Whichever method you choose, test that you can locate a dated copy and understand which Nitrox version created it. A backup that cannot be found or identified is not a practical recovery plan.

How to restore a Nitrox save after corruption
Restore conservatively. Keep the damaged copy until the replacement world has been verified, because it may contain changes that are not present in the older backup.
- Stop Nitrox completely. Use the normal stop action and wait for the process or container to exit.
- Confirm the active data path. Recheck
--data-pathor the persistent volume used by the current launch configuration. Do not assume that a new shortcut or service points to the old directory. - Preserve the current world. Rename the existing folder to something such as
My World-corrupt-2026-10-15. Do not delete it. - Prepare the known-good backup. Copy or move the dated backup so that the restored directory has the exact world name expected by the server, for example
My World. - Restore the companion data. If your backup includes server configuration and player/world data stored with the world, restore those matching files as well. Do not mix files from unrelated worlds or dates.
- Start the server and inspect the result. Confirm that the world opens and check several bases, vehicles, player inventories, and progression milestones. Have each regular player verify their own important items.
- Keep the rollback copy. Delete the renamed damaged folder only after the restored world has been used successfully and a new backup has been made.
Nitrox 1.8.0.0 added launcher management for multiple servers and restoring world backups. That feature can simplify selection, but it does not remove the need to verify the data path and the contents of the restored world.
Will a Nitrox save survive a server update?
Sometimes, but compatibility is version-specific. Nitrox 1.8.1.0 release notes explicitly state: “1.8.1.0 save files are compatible with both 1.8.0.1 and 1.8.0.0.” That statement is a guarantee for those listed versions, not a promise that every future or older release can read the same files.
Upgrade procedure
- Stop the current server and make a dated copy of the complete world folder.
- Record the source version, target version, data path, and world name.
- Read the release notes for the exact source-to-target pair. Do not infer compatibility from a similar-looking version number.
- Install or select the new server version without deleting the old backup.
- Start the new version against the intended data path. If it offers to migrate or convert data, keep the pre-upgrade copy before accepting.
- Check the world, player inventories, bases, vehicles, and progression. If anything is missing or the server fails to load, stop it and restore the pre-upgrade copy.
Keep the old server files or installation available until the new version has passed this check. A rollback is simplest when both the old data copy and the old executable are still accessible.
Serializer changes require an extra backup
The Nitrox 1.8.0.0 release history documents JSON as a save format and includes a /swapserializer [serializer] command. Treat a serializer change as a data migration, not as a cosmetic setting.
- Make a complete backup before running the command.
- Never change the serializer on the only copy of a world.
- Record the serializer and Nitrox version beside the backup.
- Test the converted world before removing the original-format copy.
If you are unsure which serializer a particular server expects, leave the existing format unchanged and consult the release notes for that exact build. A restore plan that depends on an undocumented conversion is not a safe plan.
Troubleshooting: the backup or restore does not work
The server starts an empty world
- Check that the restored folder is under the active
--data-path, not merely under the directory used by an old shortcut. - Check the world folder name and capitalization. A copy named
My World-2026-10-15-before-upgradeis a backup label, not necessarily the name the server is configured to load. - Confirm that the server account can read the folder and its contents.
- Stop the server again before replacing the folder; copying over a running world can leave mixed files.
The world loads but progress is missing
- Verify that you restored the complete world directory rather than one visible save file.
- Restore the matching server configuration and player/world data from the same dated backup.
- Check whether the backup predates the missing progress. A valid older copy cannot contain changes made after it was created.
- Do not overwrite the damaged folder until you have preserved it for comparison.
The copied folder is incomplete
- Review the copy operation for permission, disk-space, network, or path-length errors.
- On a container host, verify that you copied the persistent host-mounted volume rather than a temporary container layer.
- Repeat the copy with the server stopped and compare the source and destination item counts.
An update refuses to open the save
- Stop using the new version and retain its logs and the failed data copy.
- Check the release notes for the exact two versions involved. The compatibility statement for 1.8.1.0 covers 1.8.0.1 and 1.8.0.0 only.
- Restore the pre-upgrade backup and, if necessary, return to the earlier server version.
- Do not run a serializer swap on the only remaining copy.
A restart appears to wipe the save
Project release history records a fix for a server-restart save-wipe bug. Because failures of that kind have occurred in the project’s history, treat an independent, dated backup as mandatory even when normal shutdowns appear reliable. After a restart, confirm that the world and player data are present before allowing a long play session to continue.
Backup checklist for every Nitrox administrator
- Find and record the current
--data-path, or identify the launcher/service configuration directory. - Record the exact world folder name and Nitrox version.
- Stop the server and verify that the process has exited.
- Copy the entire world folder and its associated server/player data.
- Store the copy outside the live data directory.
- Use a dated name such as
My World-2026-10-15-before-upgrade. - Verify the copy’s contents and available disk space.
- Keep a second copy on another disk, host, or off-site location.
- Read release notes before every version change and confirm the exact compatibility pair.
- Test a restore periodically while retaining the original backup and live world.
This process answers the practical questions administrators usually face: where Nitrox saves live, how to capture a complete world safely, how to roll back corruption, and why an update should never be trusted without a dated copy.
