How to Save and Load a Game on a Project Zomboid Server

By VGSources Team 10 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Project Zomboid saves a dedicated multiplayer world on the server computer, not in a separate cloud slot. To preserve it safely, stop the server, copy the complete Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<server> folder together with its matching profile and mod records, then restart using the same server name. Loading is the reverse: stop the target server, back up its current files, restore the matching packet, verify the game branch and mods, and start that same profile.

This method applies to a self-managed dedicated server on Windows or Linux. Hosting-panel interfaces differ, but the files that make a world load correctly are the same.

How Project Zomboid server saves are organized

A multiplayer world is split between the world data and the profile that tells the server how to open it. Copying only one of those pieces can produce a new map, default settings, missing spawns, or a world that refuses to load.

World data

On Windows, the usual user-data root is %UserProfile%Zomboid. On Linux, it is commonly ~/.local/share/Zomboid. Inside that root, a dedicated multiplayer world is stored at:

Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<server>

Replace <server> with the server/profile name actually used by the instance. The folder contains the persistent multiplayer state that players expect to find after a restart.

Profile and configuration

The corresponding profile files are under Zomboid/Server. At minimum, identify the profile’s <server>.ini, SandboxVars file, and spawn files. Keep any other files that profile uses. The profile name determines which configuration is read and which save target is selected; changing it can make the server create or open a different save.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Workshop, mods, and dependencies

The world is not a complete restore by itself. Preserve the exact WorkshopItems and Mods records, along with map and dependency information used by the server. A backup made without those records may point to content the restored instance cannot find.

What to record before touching the live server

A short record makes a later restore much less ambiguous. Put it beside each dated backup rather than relying on memory.

  • The exact server/profile name, including capitalization and punctuation.
  • The game branch and build used when the backup was made.
  • The complete Workshop item list, mod list, and map dependencies.
  • The date and time of the last known good player join.
  • Whether the copy was tested successfully under a separate profile.

These details let you distinguish a bad file copy from a branch, profile, or mod mismatch.

How to save and back up a dedicated server safely

Use a controlled maintenance window. Copying while the game is writing chunks or player data can leave an internally inconsistent backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Announce maintenance. Tell players when the server will stop and when you expect it to return. Ask them to disconnect normally before shutdown.
  2. Stop the dedicated server completely. Wait for the process and its console to close rather than copying immediately after issuing a stop command. Do not take the live copy while the server is still writing.
  3. Locate the active save. Open the server’s user-data root and identify Saves/Multiplayer/<server> for the profile in use. If several folders exist, use the profile name and your recorded last-good state to select the correct one.
  4. Copy the entire multiplayer folder. Copy the complete Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<server> directory, not selected map chunks or individual files.
  5. Copy the matching profile. From Zomboid/Server, copy the profile’s <server>.ini, SandboxVars file, spawn files, and every other file used by that profile.
  6. Preserve content records. Keep the exact WorkshopItems, Mods, map, and dependency information with the copy. Do not rebuild the list from memory after a failure.
  7. Place the packet in a dated directory. Use a name that identifies the server and date, such as survival-2026-10-14. A dated directory on another disk provides protection against accidental replacement; an external USB hard drive is one optional destination.
  8. Record the state. Add the profile name, branch/build, mod information, and last known good join date to a text file beside the copy.
  9. Restart the server. Start the same profile and verify that the world and player access are normal before ending maintenance.

Why the server must be stopped first

Save files are not a static export while the process is running. World changes, player inventories, and configuration writes can occur between copying two files. A stopped process gives every file in the packet a consistent point in time.

The minimum restore packet

Use this checklist before calling a backup complete.

Packet component What it provides Required handling
Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<server> World and multiplayer state Copy the complete folder while the server is stopped.
Active profile under Zomboid/Server Server settings, sandbox rules, and spawn information Keep the matching <server>.ini, SandboxVars, spawn files, and other profile files together.
WorkshopItems and Mods Workshop content and enabled-mod selections Preserve the exact records and their map/dependency information.
Dated copy record Identification of when and from which state the backup came Store the server name, branch/build, mod list, and last known good join date beside the files.
Restore test result Evidence that the packet can be opened Test under a separate profile before replacing the live world whenever practical.

How to load or restore a saved world

Restoration replaces the target server’s current state, so preserve that state first. The sequence below avoids turning a failed restore into permanent data loss.

  1. Stop the target server. Do not overwrite files while the target instance is running.
  2. Make a fresh safety copy. Copy the target’s current multiplayer save and active profile to a newly dated directory. This is your rollback point if the restored packet is wrong.
  3. Prepare the target profile. Confirm the server name you intend to run. The name must match the restored save’s profile name; a different name can select another configuration or create another save target.
  4. Restore the world folder. Put the saved Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<server> folder in the target server’s corresponding location. Replace only after the safety copy is complete.
  5. Restore profile files. Put the matching <server>.ini, SandboxVars, spawn files, and other profile files under Zomboid/Server.
  6. Restore content records. Apply the saved WorkshopItems, Mods, map, and dependency information rather than using whatever list happens to be on the target machine.
  7. Check branch and mod compatibility. Confirm that the target is running the same game branch/build expected by the backup and that required mod versions are available. A patch, removed mod, or changed mod content can prevent an older world from loading correctly.
  8. Test separately when possible. Start the copy under a separate test profile first. Confirm that the console reaches a normal load, the expected map appears, and a test player can join. Keep the live profile untouched until this check succeeds.
  9. Start the intended profile. Once the test is sound, start the live server using the original profile name. The same profile directs the server to the restored world.
  10. Inspect logs and console output. Look for load errors, missing workshop items, missing maps, or configuration failures before announcing that the migration is complete.

Why a restored server opens a new or empty world

An empty map usually means the server did not open the files you restored, not that the old world vanished. Check these causes in order.

The profile name changed

The save folder and profile are keyed to the server name. Starting with a new name, or launching with a different -servername value, can select a different configuration and save target. Return to the original name and verify that the corresponding folder exists under Saves/Multiplayer.

The folder is in the wrong user-data root

Windows and Linux use different default roots. Confirm that the running service account is the account whose Zomboid directory you copied. A file placed in an administrator’s home directory will not be read by a service running as another user.

Only the world was copied

Without the matching INI, SandboxVars, spawn files, and content records, the target may start with defaults or fail to resolve the world correctly. Restore the complete packet rather than adding files one at a time from memory.

The target is on a different branch or build

Patch changes can alter compatibility. Verify the branch/build on which the backup was made and use a compatible target before attempting another load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A required mod or map is missing or changed

Compare the saved WorkshopItems and Mods records with what the target can install. Removed or changed content can stop an old world from loading correctly. Resolve the content difference before treating the save as corrupted.

The copy was taken while the server was running

A live copy may contain files from different write points. Return to a dated backup made after a clean stop, then repeat the restore with the target shut down.

The replacement was made without a rollback copy

Do not keep experimenting on the only copy. First duplicate the current target state, then work on a separate test profile so each attempt remains reversible.

Moving a hosted world to a dedicated server

The migration is a file-and-profile move, regardless of whether the original instance was an in-game host or a provider-managed server. The provider’s download and upload controls may differ, but the destination still needs the same world folder, profile, name, and content records.

Export from the original host

  1. Stop the original instance through its normal control panel or shutdown process.
  2. Obtain the complete multiplayer save folder for the active server name.
  3. Obtain the matching server profile files, including INI, SandboxVars, and spawn files.
  4. Export the exact WorkshopItems, Mods, map, and dependency records.
  5. Write down the original branch/build, profile name, and last known good join date.

Import to the dedicated server

  1. Install or prepare the target dedicated server on a compatible branch/build.
  2. Stop it before placing any files.
  3. Use the original profile name and place the save under Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<server>.
  4. Place the profile files under Zomboid/Server and apply the saved content records.
  5. Run a separate-profile test and inspect the console before switching production players to the new instance.

A migration that copies only map data can appear successful at first while silently losing settings, spawn behavior, or mod-dependent content. Treat the profile and records as part of the world.

Backup rotation and restore testing

A single dated copy protects against one mistake; a rotation gives you choices when a problem is discovered later. Keep multiple dated states when storage allows, and do not overwrite the only known-good packet with an untested copy.

WD 2TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive for Windows, USB 3.2 Gen 1/USB 3.0 for PC & Mac, Plug and Play Ready - WDBU6Y0020BBK-WESN
  • High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
  • Plug-and-play expandability
  • Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
  • SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)

Use a simple rotation

  • Create a new dated directory after each maintenance window or other interval appropriate to your server.
  • Keep the world, profile, content records, and state notes in the same packet.
  • Retain at least one earlier known-good packet when deleting older copies.
  • Store one copy on a separate physical device when practical; an external USB hard drive is an option.

Test before an emergency

A backup is useful only if the server can read it. Periodically restore a packet to a separate profile, confirm the expected world loads, and record the result. Testing on a separate profile prevents the verification process from overwriting the live server.

Choosing a hosting approach for save control

The file workflow differs in convenience, but these are the practical decision points when comparing an in-game host, a self-managed dedicated server, and managed hosting.

Question In-game hosting Self-managed dedicated server Managed hosting
Must the host machine be online? Generally, the host must be running for others to connect. The dedicated machine must remain available, but it can run unattended. The provider’s infrastructure handles availability; exact behavior depends on its service.
Who controls save and configuration files? The player hosting the game controls the local files. The administrator controls the server machine and its user-data directories. The provider exposes whatever file access and controls its panel supports.
How are backups created? Copy the host’s world and matching profile after stopping the session. Use the controlled file-copy procedure described here. Use the provider’s backup or file manager, while still preserving the complete packet.
Can it run unattended? Usually limited by the host’s session and machine availability. Yes, when the machine and service are configured to stay online. Typically intended for continuous operation, subject to the provider’s terms.
How reproducible are profile and mods? Depends on the host’s local records. High, because the administrator can preserve the exact files and name. Depends on export access and whether the panel preserves the same records.

Exact panel buttons and paths are provider-specific. Regardless of platform, insist on access to the complete world, profile, WorkshopItems, Mods, and dependency information before relying on a service as your only copy.

Operational checklist

  • Announce maintenance and disconnect players cleanly.
  • Stop the server and verify that it is no longer writing.
  • Copy the full multiplayer save folder.
  • Copy the matching INI, SandboxVars, spawn, and other profile files.
  • Preserve WorkshopItems, Mods, maps, and dependencies.
  • Place the packet in a dated directory and note its build and last good join date.
  • Before restoring, make a fresh copy of the target’s current files.
  • Keep the original server/profile name.
  • Check branch/build and mod compatibility.
  • Test on a separate profile and inspect console/log output before replacing live data.

Sources and scope

The file locations and backup model here follow the Project Zomboid Wiki’s save-files and backups guide, published August 28, 2026, and the Project Zomboid Guide’s server-backup and dedicated-server setup guides, updated September 30, 2026. The importance of keeping the server name aligned with its save target is also reflected in Steam Community discussion of the -servername parameter. Hosting-panel procedures are intentionally described at the file level because each provider exposes different controls.
