What should you spend gold on?
There is no single best purchase for every character. Before buying, ask whether the item solves a need now, suits your build, and is worth delaying a larger goal such as a home. How to make gold go further when trading
Mercantile governs buying and selling prices, according to Bethesda Support’s leveling guide. The source does not give a verified discount percentage or skill breakpoint, so treat Mercantile as relevant to commerce without planning around an unverified threshold.
Sell loot deliberately instead of letting valuable items sit unused. Game8’s merchant guide identifies Nilphas Omellian at the Merchants Inn in the Imperial City as a place to sell wares. This is a third-party location lead, not an official confirmation of a current merchant transaction limit.

Choose purchases around your character
If your character uses magic
Game8 says spells can be bought at magic shops, chapels, and Mages Guilds. Prioritize spells that address a real gap in your character’s toolkit; once learned, a spell is no longer available for purchase from a merchant. That makes checking what you need before shopping more useful than buying spells simply because they are on offer.
If you want a home
PC Gamer describes homes as purchases made from sellers, with specific NPCs selling upgrades for most houses. Decide whether you want to save for the home itself or budget for particular upgrades afterward. The guide does not establish a complete price ranking, so compare the options you encounter in your game rather than assuming one location is cheapest.
