Sign in to the same Apple Account for iCloud and Game Center on both devices, enable any service the game requires, and use the game’s own cloud-save or synchronization command. Do not erase the iPhone or launch competing first-time uploads until the iPad has loaded the verified newest save.
Apple describes iCloud and Game Center as keeping progress and game saves current “on supported games.” That qualification matters: some titles sync automatically through Apple services, some require a manual in-game upload or download, and some do not provide cross-device saving at all.

First, identify the exact JRPG and version
Save behavior belongs to the game, not to the iPhone or iPad in general. Before changing anything, record the exact title, edition, and platform version. A remaster can use a different save system from the original release, and an update can change menu names or cloud requirements.
- Write down the game’s full name, such as Final Fantasy VIII Remastered rather than simply “Final Fantasy VIII.”
- Check whether both devices run the same iOS/iPadOS-compatible edition from the same publisher.
- Open the game’s current support page and look for terms such as Cloud Save, Cloud Sync, iCloud, Load from cloud, or Transfer data.
- Make a local save in a safe slot before attempting a transfer. Treat that save as your recovery copy.
If the publisher does not document cross-device saving, do not assume that an Apple backup, Game Center achievement, or an App Store download will restore the game’s playable progress.

How Apple-device game saves work
There are three different layers that are often confused:
Game Center
Game Center identifies you for supported games and can carry certain game data between devices. It is not a universal save repository. A title must implement the relevant Apple services for progress to appear on another device.
iCloud and iCloud Drive
Apps can store data in iCloud or iCloud Drive when the developer has implemented those services and you have enabled them. Apple’s general iCloud guidance says an app’s data stays current on devices where iCloud is configured for that app; it does not promise that every game uses iCloud or that every save slot is preserved.

Some games present a Cloud Save or Cloud Sync command inside their title. That command may compare a local save with a server copy, upload only the newest one, or require you to choose Load from cloud on the destination device. In those games, opening the app is not enough: you must complete the publisher’s documented flow.

These layers can coexist. A game may require the same Apple Account for identity, iCloud Drive for storage, and a manual button inside the game to start the transfer.
Prepare both devices safely
Do the preparation on the original iPhone first, then repeat the account checks on the iPad.
- Update iOS and iPadOS. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance recommends current operating systems when progress does not appear. Install pending updates before starting a transfer, then restart both devices if an update was applied.
- Use the same Apple Account for iCloud. Open Settings, tap your name, and confirm that the account shown on the iPhone is the one used on the iPad. A different account creates a different iCloud data space.
- Use the same Apple Account for Game Center. In Settings, open Game Center and verify the account on each device. Sign out and back in only if the account is incorrect; do not sign out in the middle of an upload.
- Enable the service named by the game. If its instructions say iCloud Drive, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Drive and enable iCloud Drive. If the title has a separate app switch under iCloud, turn that on as well.
- Connect to a reliable network and power. Cloud operations can take several minutes, and interrupting an upload can leave you unsure which copy is current. Keep the game open until it reports completion.
- Make and date a fresh local save. Note the in-game save slot and the approximate time. This gives you a reference when a game displays local and cloud timestamps.
Do not delete the game, reset the iPhone, or remove its local save at this stage.
General transfer procedure for a supported game
Use this sequence when the publisher provides no more specific instructions. If the game’s menu uses different wording, follow its documented labels instead.

- Finish the source save. On the iPhone, save at a known point, leave the game in a stable state, and wait for any in-game cloud indicator to finish.
- Start the game’s upload or sync action. Look in the title screen, Load/Save menu, Settings, or Account menu for Cloud Save, Cloud Sync, Upload, or Save to cloud. Automatic iCloud games may not show a button; in that case, allow the game to remain open long enough for its automatic save to complete.
- Read the timestamp or conflict prompt. If the game compares a device save with a server save, confirm that the copy you intend to keep is the newest. Never select an older copy merely because it is on the device you are holding.
- Install or open the same edition on the iPad. Sign in with the matching Apple Account and Game Center account before launching the game for the first time.
- Use the destination’s cloud-load command. Choose Load from cloud, Download, or the equivalent option if the title provides one. Wait for the game to finish and then open the expected save slot.
- Verify the result. Check the character level, location, inventory, play time, and the save’s date. Play briefly, make a second local save, and confirm that the iPad now behaves normally.
- Retain the iPhone copy. Keep the original device and its local save until the iPad has loaded the correct data and you have made a new verified save there.
What the official examples show
Dragon Quest V: manual Cloud Sync and newest-save behavior
The documented Dragon Quest V flow uses a manual Cloud Sync command inside the game. During synchronization, the game compares the device and server timestamps and syncs the most recent data. It does not provide a choice to restore an older save.
That design changes how you should prepare: make the save you want on the source device before pressing Cloud Sync, and do not use the command while an unwanted newer save is on the destination or server. If the timestamp shown by the game is not the one you expect, stop and inspect both devices rather than confirming blindly.
Final Fantasy VIII Remastered: automatic iCloud saving
The iOS instructions for Final Fantasy VIII Remastered describe automatic storage in iCloud. They require you to be signed in to iCloud and to have iCloud Drive enabled. Cloud auto-saves are limited to once every three minutes, and a save can take several minutes depending on network conditions.

Do not trigger first-time cloud saving on multiple devices at the same time. The publisher warns that simultaneous first-time saves can overwrite data. The safer order is to let the original device complete its automatic cloud save, close or pause the game, then launch the title on the iPad and wait for the cloud copy to appear.

Final Fantasy III: explicit Cloud Save and Load from cloud
The Final Fantasy III instructions use a two-stage manual process. On the original device, choose Cloud Save before deleting the app or changing devices. On the new device, sign in with the same Apple Account and choose Load from cloud.
Keep the original device’s save until the download on the iPad is complete. Deleting the app first removes your local fallback and leaves you dependent on a cloud upload that may not have happened.

Preventing overwrites and lost progress
When the game keeps only the newest copy
A timestamp-based system can make an old but important save impossible to select. Before syncing, load the desired local slot, save again if necessary, and confirm its time. If the game reports that the server copy is newer, cancel unless you are certain that server copy is the one you want.

When automatic saving is delayed
An automatic game may not upload immediately. The documented Final Fantasy VIII Remastered limit is once every three minutes, with additional network delay possible. Leave the source connected and open until the game has had time to perform its cloud operation; do not start a competing first-time save on the iPad.
When you need a rollback
Do not rely on a cloud service as a multi-version archive unless the game explicitly says it keeps versions. Preserve the original device, its local save slots, and any in-game backup slots. A successful transfer is not proof that an older cloud version remains recoverable.
Troubleshooting: the iPad does not show the save
Work through these checks in order. Test the game after each relevant change.

- Confirm support. Verify that the exact title and edition advertise cross-device or cloud saves. Apple’s instructions apply to supported games, not all App Store games.
- Check both accounts. Compare the iCloud Apple Account and Game Center account on the iPhone and iPad. Correct the source device too; checking only the destination can hide an upload problem.
- Check the source save. Reopen the iPhone game and look for its cloud status, timestamp, or Cloud Save command. If no upload has completed, the iPad has nothing to download.
- Check iCloud Drive or the app switch. Some titles require a specific iCloud setting even when other iCloud data is working.
- Use the game’s load command. A title that requires Load from cloud may not import anything merely because you installed it on the iPad.
- Stop conflicting sessions. Close the game on one device while the other performs its first upload or download. This is especially important for titles that warn about simultaneous first-time saves.
- Wait for propagation. Keep both devices on a stable network and allow several minutes where the publisher documents network-dependent saving.
- Do not erase the source. Preserve the iPhone save while contacting the publisher. If the save remains absent after these checks, use the game’s current support page for its exact version and menu path.
Can a save move between iOS and another operating system?
The procedures described here establish transfer between Apple devices for games that support the relevant Apple or publisher service. They do not establish Android, console, PC, or cross-platform compatibility. A game may offer an independent publisher account for cross-platform play, but that must be stated in the title’s documentation. Do not infer it from iCloud or Game Center support.

Frequently overlooked details
- Achievements are not proof of save synchronization. A Game Center achievement can be present while playable progress is absent if the game does not implement save storage.
- Installing the app is not transferring the save. The App Store delivers the application; the game’s cloud feature must deliver its data.
- Same family sharing is not the same account. Two devices can belong to one household while using different Apple Accounts, which prevents the expected iCloud data from appearing.
- Keep the original until verification. This is the single most important recovery precaution when the publisher’s process is manual or overwrite-prone.
