Open the in-game pause or menu screen and choose its quit or return-to-menu option. Do not force-close the game during a save.

When you restart, expect to resume from a checkpoint or save point determined by that game. Saved progress does not guarantee that you will return to the exact spot where you stopped.

There is no universal manual-save command established for every Borderlands title and platform. If you need exact button presses or menu labels, identify the specific game and the platform or storefront you use.
How saving differs by Borderlands game
Mainline Borderlands shooter-looters
For the standard shooter-looter games, the safe general approach is to let autosaving finish and exit through the in-game menu. The exact checkpoint rules and restart location vary by title, so do not assume that a saved game will resume at your exact position.

Tales from the Borderlands
The official Tales from the Borderlands manual warns that returning to the main menu from gameplay loses progress made after the last autosave. This warning is specific to that episodic adventure, not a general rule for every Borderlands game.

Cloud backup is separate from in-game saving
Cloud saves are backups managed through your platform, not a substitute for the game’s autosave or checkpoint system. 2K says saves are associated with the platform account rather than a 2K or SHiFT account, and an internet connection is usually needed for cloud saving. Availability and recovery steps vary by platform; 2K’s backup and restore instructions cover Steam, Epic, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo. The article states that PlayStation cloud recovery requires PlayStation Plus, Nintendo cloud backup requires Nintendo Switch Online, and Xbox saves are stored automatically while connected to Xbox Network. Platform menus and requirements can change.

Borderlands 3 saves on Steam and Epic for PC
Moving a Borderlands 3 save between Steam and Epic requires manually copying local files; it does not make saves synchronize between the storefronts. 2K’s PC transfer guide recommends backing up existing saves first. On Windows, the documented save folder is DocumentsMy GamesBorderlands 3SavedSaveGames.

Launch Borderlands 3 once on the destination storefront, then exit. This creates that storefront’s save folder.

Back up the existing save files before copying anything; an incorrect transfer can risk losing a save.
