Saving depends on which version of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask you’re playing. In the original Nintendo 64 game, the Song of Time makes the durable in-game save, while an Owl Statue creates a one-use interrupt save. On Nintendo Switch’s Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics, you can also create a platform-level Suspend Point. Majora’s Mask 3D uses its own statue-saving rules.
Original Nintendo 64: save with the Song of Time
Play the Song of Time to save your game’s progress and return Link to 6:00 a.m. on the First Day. Wait until “Dawn of the First Day” appears before turning off the console. Nintendo’s N64 game manual says, “When you play the SONG OF TIME, your game progress will be saved.”
This is a cycle reset, not a snapshot of everything exactly as it is. The game’s three-day cycle spans 72 in-game hours, and playing the Song of Time resets temporary activity and resources while retaining important progress.
What carries over—and what resets

Because wallet rupees reset but banked rupees persist, deposit money you want to keep before playing the Song of Time.

Original Nintendo 64: use an Owl Statue to interrupt a session
An Owl Statue save lets you stop playing without resetting the current cycle. Activate the statue by striking it with your sword if needed, interact with it, and confirm the interrupt save. Wait for the Title Screen before powering off. When you resume, select the file marked with an owl.
This save is temporary and is consumed when you continue from it. Nintendo’s manual warns: “Once you continue that game, though, the saved game will be deleted, so after continuing your quest, be sure to save again using the SONG OF TIME or visit one of the OWL STATUES again.” If you quit after resuming without saving again, you can lose progress from that resumed session.

Switch Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics: create a Suspend Point
Nintendo Switch’s N64 app offers a separate platform-level save point. Nintendo calls it a “Suspend Point”; it is not the same as playing the Song of Time, which saves through the game’s own cycle system. Access to the N64 Nintendo Classics library requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
- While playing, open the Suspend Menu. Nintendo lists Minus for Joy-Con or a standard Switch controller, and ZR for the N64 controller.
- Choose Create Suspend Point, then select a slot.
- To resume later, open the Suspend Menu, choose Load Suspend Point, and select the point you want.
Nintendo says each game has up to four Suspend Point slots. Creating a point over an existing one overwrites it, and that overwrite cannot be undone. For a useful safety net, make an in-game save when appropriate and create a Suspend Point before a risky section. If your controller or menu behaves differently, follow the controls shown on-screen.

Majora’s Mask 3D: save at an owl or quill statue
The 3DS remake has different statue-saving rules from the original N64 game. Stand in front of an owl statue or quill statue and press A to save, as described in Nintendo’s electronic manual. Returning to the First Day does not automatically save; Nintendo states, “Note that returning to the dawn of the first day will not automatically save your game.”
Do not switch off or reset the system, or remove the game card or SD card, while saving. Nintendo also warns against using external accessories or software to modify save data.

Using save states in third-party emulators
Emulator save states can preserve a point during a session, but there is no universal button, file format, compatibility rule, or persistence behavior across emulators. The exact steps depend on the emulator, platform, and version you use. Consult that emulator’s own documentation for its save-state controls and limitations; do not assume a state is portable between emulator versions or replaces a backup of the game’s in-game save.

Original N64 hardware requirement
If you are playing on an original Nintendo 64 console, Nintendo’s manual says the game requires an Expansion Pak. This requirement applies to the original-console release, not to the 3DS remake or Switch Nintendo Classics.
