To force an ARK server to save, open the in-game console and run admincheat saveworld (or saveworld). On ARK: Survival Evolved for PC, press Tab first; run enablecheats <admin-password> if your account is not already authorized. ARK servers also autosave in the background—15 minutes is the commonly reported default—but the interval and command behavior vary between Survival Evolved, Survival Ascended, server software, and hosting panels. Always force a save before stopping a server or making major changes.

The reliable way to force an ARK server save
A manual save writes the current world state immediately instead of waiting for the next scheduled autosave. Use it before a planned restart, configuration change, mod update, backup, or maintenance window.

ARK: Survival Evolved on PC
- Join the server with an account that has administrator rights.
- Press
Tabto open the in-game console. - If the account is not already authorized by the server, enter
enablecheats <admin-password>, replacing the placeholder with the server’s administrator password. - Enter
admincheat saveworld. If the server accepts the command without the prefix, saveworldis also reported to work. - Wait briefly before closing the game, server panel, or process. A command that produces little or no on-screen text can still have been accepted.
The authorization step is only needed when the account is not already listed among the server’s allowed cheaters. Do not publish the administrator password in chat, logs, screenshots, or a shared configuration file.
Dedicated-server console
The console attached to a dedicated server is not always identical to the in-game console. In Survival Ascended, one dedicated-server report found that admincheat saveworld did nothing in the dedicated console even though the command worked from the in-game console. If you are operating the server from a terminal or hosting control panel, test both forms—saveworld and admincheat saveworld—during a safe maintenance window. A command accepted in one console is not proof that the other console supports it.

How ARK autosaves work
ARK servers perform background saves on an interval. Community hosting documentation commonly reports a default of 15 minutes. That figure is not an official Studio Wildcard guarantee, and whether it remains the default can change with patches, server builds, or hosting-provider templates.
An autosave is a safety net, not a substitute for a planned manual save. If a process is terminated between intervals, the world can reopen at the last completed autosave. Recent breeding, building, inventories, player positions, or other changes made after that write may disappear.
The setting that controls the interval
The server setting is named AutoSavePeriodMinutes. Values are expressed in minutes. A commonly cited default is 15; an ARK: Survival Ascended community example shows the floating-point form AutoSavePeriodMinutes=15.0. Keep the decimal point when your configuration expects a float.

| Setting | Commonly reported value | What the evidence supports |
|---|---|---|
AutoSavePeriodMinutes |
15 minutes; 15.0 in one ASA example |
Reported community default; current-patch behavior is not officially confirmed |
| Shorter interval | Any value your server accepts | Can reduce the amount of progress exposed to a crash, but increases save frequency and disk activity |
| Longer interval | Any value your server accepts | Reduces scheduled writes but increases possible rollback after an abrupt stop |
Changing AutoSavePeriodMinutes safely
Exact file placement differs by game version and hosting environment. The setting is reported in both ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended, but community reports disagree about which INI file should contain it for Ascended. One example places it under the [ServerSettings] section and uses AutoSavePeriodMinutes=5; other reports point to a different server-settings file. Treat the file and section shown by your current server template as authoritative, and verify after restart.
- Stop the server cleanly rather than editing a live world configuration while it is writing.
- Make a copy of the relevant INI file so you can restore the previous value.
- Use your host’s configuration editor or open the server INI files. Search for
AutoSavePeriodMinutesbefore adding a new line; duplicate entries can make it unclear which value is active. - Set the value in minutes, for example
AutoSavePeriodMinutes=15.0. If you intentionally want a five-minute interval, use the equivalent value shown by your server’s accepted syntax. - Keep the line in the server-settings section used by that game and template. For Survival Ascended, do not assume that a file name used by an Evolved installation is correct; reports conflict.
- Save the file, start the server, and check that the setting remains after the panel regenerates or rewrites configuration files.
- Perform a manual
saveworldafter the restart and test a controlled shutdown before relying on the new interval.
A very short interval is not automatically better. It can create more frequent disk writes and may be unnecessary for a lightly populated server. A busy server with valuable building or breeding activity may reasonably choose a shorter interval, but the appropriate value depends on hardware, host limits, and how much rollback the community can tolerate.
Survival Evolved and Survival Ascended: what differs
| Question | ARK: Survival Evolved | ARK: Survival Ascended |
|---|---|---|
| In-game manual-save command | admincheat saveworld or saveworld after authorization when required |
Reports are inconsistent; test saveworld and admincheat saveworld in the console you actually use |
| Autosave setting | AutoSavePeriodMinutes is reported as the interval control |
The same setting is reported, commonly written as a float such as 15.0 |
| INI location | Use the file exposed by the server template | Community reports disagree between GameUserSettings.ini and GameServerSettings.ini; verify rather than assuming |
| Dedicated-console behavior | Command support depends on the server console | One report says the prefixed command did nothing in a dedicated console while it worked in-game |
| Clean shutdown command | Use the host’s normal stop control after saving | quit or exit are reported by the community to save and shut down cleanly, but these reports are unverified |
The table is a decision guide, not a promise that every current build behaves identically. Patch changes, launch parameters, mods, and hosting panels can alter command parsing and file generation.

How to shut down without losing progress
The safest sequence is simple: announce maintenance, force a save, stop new activity, then use the server’s normal shutdown control. Closing a hosting client window, killing a process, or powering off the machine can leave the world at the previous autosave and cause a rollback.
- Tell players to stop building, transferring items, taming, breeding, or moving valuables.
- Run
admincheat saveworldorsaveworldfrom a console that you have verified works on that server. - Allow the save operation to finish before issuing a stop command or closing the management panel.
- Use the host’s graceful stop function. On an ASA dedicated console, community reports identify
quitandexitas clean-shutdown commands, but because those reports are unverified, test them with a disposable or backed-up server first. - Restart and have an administrator confirm that the intended map, structures, characters, and inventories are present before reopening the server to everyone.
If a host panel has a separate “Restart” and “Stop” action, choose the action that sends a graceful shutdown signal. Do not assume that closing the browser tab or disconnecting your remote console stops the server safely; those actions may only sever your connection, or they may terminate the process abruptly depending on the panel.
Backups, restore points, and rollback
Scheduled saves normally overwrite the main world file. A forced save is reported to write the main file and also create a date-stamped file that can serve as a restore point. One community user reported seeing those dated backups roughly every two hours; that frequency is low-confidence and should not be treated as a guaranteed schedule.

Before changing mods, updating the server, editing INI files, or attempting a recovery, copy the world and configuration files through the host’s backup tool if one is provided. A dated save is useful only if it is retained somewhere separate from the file currently being overwritten.
When a rollback has already happened
- Stop players from making further changes; new activity can overwrite the state you are trying to recover.
- Record the approximate time of the last successful manual save and the time the server stopped.
- Check the host’s dated save list or backup interface before restarting repeatedly.
- Preserve the current files before replacing anything, so an unsuccessful restore can be reversed.
- Restore the newest known-good point, start the server, and verify the result with an administrator before allowing normal play.
If no dated backup exists, the practical recovery point may be the last autosave or the copy maintained by the host. A manual command cannot recover progress that was never written to disk.

The console says nothing
Some server consoles provide no prominent success message. Wait briefly, then perform a controlled restart or inspect the save and backup timestamps exposed by your host. Do not repeatedly issue commands while players continue changing the world; that makes it harder to identify which save was effective.
admincheat saveworld is rejected
- Confirm that you are using the in-game console rather than a chat box.
- Run
enablecheats <admin-password>if your account is not already authorized. - Try the bare
saveworldform. - On Ascended dedicated servers, try the command from the in-game console because dedicated-console parsing has been reported to differ.
- Check that you are connected to the intended server and that the console has not been disabled by the host or launch configuration.
The server keeps rolling back after a save
- Check whether the process is being killed by a hosting-panel timeout, operating-system restart, crash, or power interruption.
- Confirm that the command is being run on the live instance, not a staging or local copy.
- Inspect the autosave interval and reduce it if the current rollback window is unacceptable.
- Use the host’s graceful stop action after every planned manual save.
- Look for dated backups before attempting to overwrite the current world with a restore.
The interval change has no effect
- Search every relevant INI file for duplicate
AutoSavePeriodMinuteslines. - Check that the value is in the section read by the running server, commonly shown as
[ServerSettings]in community examples. - Verify whether the panel regenerates configuration on startup and overwrites manual edits.
- Confirm that the value uses the syntax expected by that build, including the decimal point for a float such as
15.0. - Fully restart the server after editing; a live process may continue using the old configuration.
What about ARK single-player?
This procedure is for a multiplayer ARK server. The available community material does not confirm a single-player save method well enough to present one as universal. Single-player saves can be affected by the game edition, platform, local files, and whether a session is hosted non-dedicated. Do not assume that a server-console command or an INI setting applies unchanged to a solo session.

A maintenance checklist
- Keep an administrator account authorized before maintenance begins.
- Write down the exact game edition, server build, host, and console you are using.
- Run and test
saveworldbefore the maintenance window, not for the first time during an emergency. - Use a documented autosave value for
AutoSavePeriodMinutesand retain a copy of the previous configuration. - Force a save before shutdown, updates, mod changes, migrations, and large configuration edits.
- Use graceful stop or restart controls instead of terminating the process.
- Keep dated backups when the host provides them, and verify that at least one restore point can actually be loaded.
- After maintenance, inspect the world before inviting players back.
How certain are these commands and defaults?
The save commands, 15-minute default, INI examples, and dedicated-console shutdown behavior described here come from community forum posts and hosting guides available by October 14, 2026, rather than a retrieved official Studio Wildcard reference. The most important practical rule is therefore procedural: test the command and configuration on your exact server, force a save before any planned stop, and keep an independent restore point. That approach protects progress even when a patch or hosting template changes the implementation.
