If Roblox replaces your message with #####, its filter blocked the word or phrase. Rephrase your message to follow Roblox’s rules, or use the platform’s eligible chat options with trusted friends—those options do not switch off Roblox’s rules.
Why Roblox replaces words with hashtags
Roblox says hashtags in place of words mean its filters blocked that word or phrase. Profanity may also be automatically rephrased into safer, more civil language. Hashtags are a moderation result, not an error you can reliably fix by changing how you type.
Roblox’s Experience Chat page explains the hashtag behavior, while its Safety Features: Chat, Privacy & Filtering page describes automatic rephrasing.
What you can do instead
- Rephrase the message. Use wording that communicates your point without profanity or other content that violates Roblox’s rules.
- Use available chat settings appropriately. If you are age-checked and eligible, Roblox offers chat with fewer filters between trusted friends. It is a conversation option, not a filter-bypass method.
- Use mute, block, or report tools when needed. Experience Chat provides controls for managing unwanted interactions.
How chat with fewer filters works
Roblox’s Voice chat with friends and unfiltered texting guidance limits this option by age, age-check status, and relationship. Under-13 users cannot access it. Users aged 13–17 can use it with trusted friends in the same age group; users 18 and older have broader access subject to Roblox’s requirements. Availability and settings can vary by region.

“Fewer filters” does not mean no rules or unrestricted messaging. Roblox says some content, including links and words that break its rules, remains blocked, and its Community Standards continue to apply.
Strong language in Restricted experiences
Roblox’s Restricted Content Policy allows strong language in user communications only in qualifying Restricted experiences where the Strong Language setting is enabled. These experiences are for users aged 18 or older who have completed an age check. This narrow policy exception does not permit harassment, discrimination, threats, or other conduct prohibited by Roblox’s Community Standards.

Why repeated attempts are a bad idea
Trying repeatedly to send content that violates Roblox’s rules can lead to a warning and temporary chat restrictions. Roblox says restriction lengths can increase after continued violations, and repeated violations could result in account suspension or a ban. Its Text Chat Nudge FAQ describes these enforcement steps.
