Press F3 while playing to open the debug overlay. Look for the FPS value in the displayed debug information. Press F3 again to close the overlay.
Mojang’s Java Edition 26.3 release notes document the current Debug Options shortcut and overlay details. The key steps are specific to Java Edition, not a general Minecraft shortcut.
Keep an FPS meter visible without the full overlay
- While in Java Edition, press F3 + F6 to open Debug Options.
- Choose the Performance preset.
- Close the options screen. The preset keeps an FPS meter visible.
Mojang introduced configurable debug information and the Performance preset in its Java Edition Snapshot 25w31a notes. Those notes say that checking FPS in the Performance profile “should not affect game performance.” This describes the documented Java profile; it is not a guarantee about third-party overlays or every computer.

Does this work in Bedrock Edition?
The F3 instructions and Performance preset above are documented for Java Edition. The official Bedrock graphics troubleshooting page covers items such as updates, Windows drivers, add-ons, and video settings, but does not provide an in-game FPS-counter procedure. That does not establish that no platform-specific overlay exists; it means there is no Bedrock method supported by the cited help instructions here. An external option would depend on whether you play on Windows, console, or mobile.
FPS versus refresh rate
Java Edition 26.3 also shows the display refresh rate in the debug overlay. Refresh rate describes how often the display can update; FPS is how many frames the game renders. They are related but are not the same reading, so use the FPS value when checking Minecraft’s frame rate.

If F3 does not work
- Check your edition: The documented F3 and F3 + F6 methods are for Java Edition.
- Check your keyboard: Some laptop and compact keyboards assign F3 as a secondary function. The key combination to access it depends on the device; there is no single modifier established for all keyboards.
- Try the persistent meter: If the full overlay is inconvenient, use F3 + F6 and the Performance preset rather than leaving the entire debug screen open.
