Run WordPress as a horizontally scalable web tier, but keep its state outside disposable pods. Put a Kubernetes Service and ingress in front of multiple WordPress pods; store the database on reliable persistent storage or a managed MySQL/MariaDB service; put wp-content on shared storage or externalize media to object storage; then add Redis, page caching, and autoscaling only after resource requests and metrics reflect the real workload.

Adding replicas alone does not make WordPress highly available. Posts and settings live in MySQL or MariaDB, while plugins, themes, and uploads are written to the filesystem. Every replica must see the same durable data, and the database remains a separate capacity and failure-domain problem.

What Kubernetes scaling changes—and what it does not

A Kubernetes Deployment can keep several identical WordPress web pods running and replace unhealthy pods automatically. A Service gives those pods one stable network identity, and an ingress handles incoming HTTP, HTTPS, and TLS termination. This is useful when PHP execution, static-file delivery, or traffic volume is the bottleneck.

It does not automatically replicate WordPress state. A pod’s writable layer is disposable. If one replica receives an upload and the next request reaches another replica that cannot see that file, the site appears inconsistent. The same problem occurs when a pod moves to another node and its data was stored only on the old node.

Component What it stores or does Scaling requirement
WordPress web pods PHP runtime, WordPress core, request handling Can scale horizontally when configuration and content are shared or baked into an image
MySQL or MariaDB Posts, users, options, plugin data, sessions held in the database Needs its own storage, backups, replication or failover plan, and capacity testing
wp-content Themes, plugins, uploaded media, and generated files Use shared read/write storage or move media to object storage; do not rely on a pod filesystem
Service and ingress Traffic distribution, HTTP routing, and TLS Run at least one ingress path and verify health checks and connection timeouts
Cache layers Object-cache entries and optionally complete HTML responses Use Redis or a compatible cache and define invalidation rules before increasing replicas

The official Kubernetes WordPress tutorial uses single-instance WordPress and MySQL pods and explicitly describes that arrangement as unsuitable for production. Treat tutorial manifests as learning examples, not a production architecture.

Choose the VPS and cluster shape

A Linux VPS deployment still needs a Kubernetes control plane and worker capacity. The prerequisites for a kubeadm-style cluster assume several Linux machines or cloud VMs, a container runtime, networking, and comfort with YAML and cluster administration. A single VPS can demonstrate the design, but it creates a single failure domain: a host outage takes down the control plane, web tier, and storage together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Single-node development layout

Use one Linux VPS only for development, staging, or a low-risk personal site. Local storage and a single database process are acceptable for experiments when you have a disposable copy of the data. Do not describe this layout as highly available.

Multi-node production layout

Separate control-plane responsibility from worker capacity where practical, and place workers in more than one failure domain if the provider supports it. Keep the database on a reliable network-attached volume or a managed database service. Ensure the storage system can reattach a volume after a node failure and that your Kubernetes StorageClass expresses the intended topology.

There is no universal VPS size or correct replica count. CPU, memory, PHP-FPM concurrency, plugin behavior, database queries, media operations, and cache hit rate determine capacity. Measure the actual site instead of converting a tutorial’s machine size into a promise.

  • MySQL or MariaDB data files and binary logs, if enabled.
  • wp-content/plugins and wp-content/themes.
  • wp-content/uploads and any plugin-created files.
  • Secret values such as database passwords, salts, and keys.
  • Configuration that should be identical across replicas.
  • Scheduled jobs, cron events, and outbound email credentials.

Build an immutable WordPress image containing the core version, approved plugins, and themes when possible. That makes replicas identical and avoids changing code through the dashboard on one pod only. If administrators must install plugins from the dashboard, use shared storage for the relevant directories and establish a controlled update process; otherwise a newly started pod can revert to an older code set.

Provision durable storage correctly

Create PersistentVolumeClaims (PVCs) and let a production StorageClass provision PersistentVolumes (PVs). A PVC survives pod replacement and allows Kubernetes to reattach storage according to the volume’s access and topology rules. A hostPath mount merely exposes a directory on one node; if the pod is rescheduled or that node reboots, the data may be unavailable or lost.

Database volume

Database files normally use a reliable volume with ReadWriteOnce (RWO), allowing one node to mount it read/write at a time. The 2 Gi RWO volume shown in a Kubernetes storage lesson is an example of the object shape, not a capacity recommendation. Size the database volume from observed growth, indexes, binary logs, backup retention, and recovery headroom.

Shared WordPress files

Multiple web pods need a storage design that all of them can read and, where required, write. A network filesystem or distributed volume with ReadWriteMany (RWX) can provide that shared view, but latency and locking behavior must be tested with your plugins. Alternatively, keep themes and plugins in the image and move uploads to object storage through a plugin or application integration. Object storage removes the shared-filesystem bottleneck for media, but it does not automatically handle every plugin-generated file.

Media and file design Advantages Risks and checks
Shared RWX filesystem Replicas see the same paths; existing WordPress behavior needs fewer changes Network latency, locking, throughput limits, and storage failure domain can become the bottleneck
Object-storage media Scales media capacity independently and avoids a shared upload mount Requires compatible integration, URL and cache rules, and a plan for plugin files that are not media
Local node volume Simple and often fast on one node Node affinity and rescheduling risk; unsuitable for resilient multi-node production without replication

Test a restore onto a fresh PVC. A backup that cannot be mounted and used by WordPress is not a recovery plan.

Install Kubernetes and separate configuration from secrets

  1. Provision Linux control-plane and worker machines with firewall rules, synchronized time, a supported container runtime, and enough disk for images, logs, and temporary database operations.
  2. Initialize the cluster with your chosen Kubernetes distribution, install a network plugin, and verify that nodes become Ready.
  3. Install a metrics pipeline before enabling autoscaling. The Horizontal Pod Autoscaler (HPA) cannot calculate CPU or memory utilization without a working metrics API.
  4. Create a namespace for the site. Put non-sensitive settings such as the site URL, database host, and cache endpoint in a ConfigMap.
  5. Put database passwords, WordPress salts, API keys, and SMTP credentials in Kubernetes Secrets. Restrict RBAC access and avoid committing decoded secret values to a repository.
  6. Create PVCs for the database and shared files, then verify that they bind to the intended StorageClass before starting application pods.

Use separate namespaces or clusters for staging and production when a test deployment could consume all worker resources. Apply resource quotas and network policies where your operational model supports them.

Deploy the database as an independent workstream

Do not assume that adding WordPress replicas increases database capacity. Every uncached request can still execute queries against the same database, and a larger web tier can make database saturation happen sooner.

Self-managed MySQL or MariaDB

A StatefulSet can provide stable identities and persistent volumes, but it does not by itself provide safe replication, automatic failover, backups, or point-in-time recovery. You must select a replication topology, monitor replication lag, handle split-brain scenarios, patch the database, and rehearse restoration. Keep database credentials in Secrets and expose the database only to the WordPress namespace through network policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Managed database

A managed MySQL or MariaDB service can shift replication, failover, patching, and storage operations to the provider. Confirm its network path from the VPS cluster, supported engine versions, backup retention, restore time, connection limits, and monthly cost. A managed service is not a substitute for testing a restore or checking application compatibility.

Database safeguards

  • Take scheduled logical or physical backups and copy them outside the failure domain of the primary database volume.
  • Encrypt backups and restrict access to the encryption keys.
  • Monitor query latency, connections, locks, disk utilization, replication lag, and error rates.
  • Run restore drills into an isolated namespace and record the exact cutover steps.
  • Use connection pooling or a carefully sized PHP-FPM worker count so a scale-out event does not exhaust database connections.

Deploy WordPress behind a Service and ingress

Use a Deployment for stateless web pods when all replicas can use the same image and external state. A StatefulSet is generally for components that need stable identities and per-pod storage, such as a self-managed database; it is not a requirement for ordinary WordPress web replicas.

  1. Create a Deployment whose container listens on the port used by the PHP/web server. Set explicit CPU and memory requests and limits based on measurements from representative traffic.
  2. Mount the shared or image-based wp-content paths. Mount database connection settings and salts from Secrets and ConfigMaps rather than hard-coding them in the image.
  3. Create a ClusterIP Service selecting the Deployment’s labels. Confirm that endpoints appear only for ready pods.
  4. Configure an ingress resource or ingress controller with the production hostname, TLS certificate, body-size limits suitable for media uploads, and timeouts compatible with PHP and upstream caches.
  5. Set readiness probes that fail while WordPress cannot reach its dependencies. Use liveness probes conservatively; a probe that restarts a pod during a slow database event can amplify an outage.
  6. Apply a PodDisruptionBudget and anti-affinity or topology spread constraints so voluntary maintenance does not remove every web replica from one node.

Terminate TLS at the ingress or at a controlled edge proxy, then ensure WordPress receives the correct HTTPS and host headers. Incorrect forwarded headers can create redirect loops, mixed-content warnings, or incorrect canonical URLs.

Make caching part of the scaling plan

Scale efficiency usually improves more from removing avoidable work than from running many PHP pods.

Redis object cache

Redis can hold WordPress object-cache entries so repeated options and query results do not require a database round trip. Use a supported WordPress integration, size Redis memory, define an eviction policy appropriate for the cache, and monitor hit rate and evictions. Do not store the only copy of durable content in Redis.

Page caching

Cache anonymous HTML at the ingress, reverse proxy, or a compatible WordPress page-cache layer. Define bypass rules for logged-in users, carts, previews, comments, and other personalized responses. Purge or version cached pages when posts, menus, widgets, or theme settings change. A high page-cache hit rate can reduce PHP and database load dramatically, while a misconfigured cache can serve private or stale content.

Sessions and scheduled work

Ensure login sessions and plugin queues are shared or routed consistently. Review WP-Cron behavior: several replicas can trigger the same scheduled event unless you disable web-triggered cron and run a controlled Kubernetes CronJob or an external scheduler. Make jobs idempotent and prevent overlapping executions with a lock.

Configure HPA only after requests and metrics are trustworthy

The HPA polls metrics and adjusts replicas between configured minimum and maximum values. CPU utilization is calculated relative to the CPU request, so an unrealistic request produces an unrealistic scaling signal. Memory, request rate, queue depth, PHP-FPM saturation, or a custom metric may better represent your bottleneck than CPU alone.

A published Kubernetes guide demonstrates an HPA with minReplicas: 1, maxReplicas: 20, and an average CPU target of 80%. Those are example configuration values, not a WordPress capacity guarantee.

apiVersion: autoscaling/v2
kind: HorizontalPodAutoscaler
metadata:
  name: wordpress
spec:
  scaleTargetRef:
    apiVersion: apps/v1
    kind: Deployment
    name: wordpress
  minReplicas: 1
  maxReplicas: 20
  metrics:
  - type: Resource
    resource:
      name: cpu
      target:
        type: Utilization
        averageUtilization: 80
  1. Install and verify the metrics pipeline. Check that the metrics API returns current values for nodes and pods.
  2. Load-test authenticated, uncached, media-heavy, and administration requests separately. A cache-only test hides PHP and database limits.
  3. Record CPU, memory, PHP-FPM active workers, request latency, database latency, storage latency, cache hit rate, errors, and queue depth.
  4. Set requests from those observations, leaving headroom for traffic bursts. Set limits that prevent one pod from starving its neighbors without causing routine throttling.
  5. Choose minimum replicas for normal availability and maximum replicas that the database, storage, and VPS budget can actually support.
  6. Add stabilization windows or rate limits if rapid scale-up and scale-down causes connection storms or cache churn.
  7. Test a scale event while watching database connections and storage throughput. If web pods grow but latency worsens, the limiting tier is elsewhere.

Traffic-based or custom-metric autoscaling can be more predictive than CPU when page caching serves most requests. It requires a reliable metric adapter and a clearly defined relationship between the metric and safe capacity.

Backups, upgrades, and failure recovery

Production readiness is measured by recovery, not by the number of replicas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Back up the database, WordPress files, Kubernetes manifests, Secrets through a secure mechanism, and ingress certificates.
  • Keep at least one backup copy outside the VPS or storage system that hosts production.
  • Document recovery order: provision nodes, install the cluster and storage driver, restore the database, restore media and code, recreate Secrets and ConfigMaps, deploy WordPress, then switch ingress traffic.
  • Record recovery-point and recovery-time objectives and test them on a schedule.
  • Pin compatible WordPress, PHP, plugin, database, and container-image versions. Test upgrades in staging with a copy of production data.
  • Drain nodes deliberately during maintenance and confirm the PodDisruptionBudget permits progress without taking the site offline.

Compare architecture choices before committing

Decision Option A Option B How to decide
Media Shared RWX filesystem Object-storage media Choose RWX for compatibility with filesystem-oriented plugins; choose object storage when media scale and storage independence matter more.
Database Self-managed MariaDB/MySQL replication Managed MySQL/MariaDB Self-manage only with database expertise, monitoring, failover practice, and restore drills; managed services reduce operations but add provider dependency and network cost.
Storage Local, node-attached volume Network-attached or distributed volume Local storage is simpler and tied to node placement; network or distributed storage improves mobility but adds latency and service cost.
Autoscaling signal CPU or memory Traffic, queue, or custom metric Resource metrics are easy to operate; custom metrics can track user-visible pressure when CPU does not.
Operations Single VPS Multi-VPS or managed Kubernetes Single VPS minimizes complexity but concentrates failure; multiple machines improve fault isolation at the cost of administration and storage design.

Troubleshoot the failures that replicas expose

Symptom Likely cause Checks and fix
Uploads appear on one request but not another Pods use separate writable filesystems or an incomplete object-storage integration Inspect mounts and upload URLs; use shared storage or complete the media integration.
Pods restart during traffic spikes Memory limits, PHP-FPM worker exhaustion, or an aggressive liveness probe Check container termination reasons and probe failures; tune workers and limits from measurements.
HPA never changes replicas Metrics API missing, no resource requests, or the target metric is unavailable Verify metrics-server output, requests, HPA events, and metric freshness.
HPA scales out but response time rises Database connections, storage latency, or cache misses are saturated Correlate web-pod count with database and storage metrics; cap replicas until the bottleneck is fixed.
Pods remain pending after a node failure RWO volume attachment, node affinity, insufficient capacity, or topology constraints Inspect PVC and scheduler events; provide another eligible node or use storage designed for the required mobility.
Users see stale or private pages Page-cache bypass or invalidation rules are wrong Test anonymous, logged-in, preview, and post-update requests; correct cache keys and purge behavior.
Scheduled posts run twice Multiple replicas trigger WP-Cron concurrently Move scheduling to one controlled CronJob or external scheduler and add locking.
Site redirects endlessly between HTTP and HTTPS Ingress forwarding headers or WordPress URL settings are inconsistent Verify TLS termination, forwarded-proto handling, and the canonical site URL.

A practical rollout sequence

  1. Build a repeatable WordPress image and inventory all stateful paths.
  2. Deploy a staging namespace with a durable database PVC, shared or externalized media, Secrets, and ConfigMaps.
  3. Expose the Deployment through a Service and ingress; add TLS, readiness, liveness, and disruption controls.
  4. Enable Redis and page caching with explicit bypass and invalidation rules.
  5. Run representative load tests and record the web, PHP, database, storage, and cache measurements.
  6. Set resource requests and limits, then enable an HPA with conservative minimum and maximum replicas.
  7. Rehearse node loss, pod replacement, database restore, storage restore, certificate renewal, and rollback.
  8. Promote the same manifests and image versions to production, monitor continuously, and change one scaling variable at a time.

The safe pattern is therefore clear: scale stateless WordPress request handling, not the underlying state by assumption. Durable storage, a deliberately operated database, correct ingress and caching, measured resource requests, and tested recovery are prerequisites for useful Kubernetes autoscaling on a Linux VPS.
