To schedule a 24/7 YouTube livestream from a VPS, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, then run a separate playlist-capable encoder such as FFmpeg on the VPS. The scheduled event creates the watch page; the VPS supplies the continuous video and audio feed. You need the event’s server URL and stream key, media you have the right to stream, enough outbound bandwidth, and monitoring for the encoder and YouTube stream health.
Understand the two parts: the YouTube event and the video feed
A scheduled YouTube livestream and the encoder feeding it are separate. The scheduled event is a YouTube broadcast; it does not play files from your VPS or keep an encoder running. The VPS process reads your media playlist and sends audio and video to YouTube. YouTube’s Live API describes a live broadcast separately from the live stream delivery settings (YouTube Live Streaming API).
For a typical setup, schedule one event in Live Control Room, then connect your VPS encoder to that event using its server URL and stream key. Depending on the event configuration, you may need to wait for the preview and click Go live in Live Control Room after the encoder connects.
Prepare the VPS and playlist
1. Install and check FFmpeg
Install FFmpeg using your Linux distribution’s maintained package or the FFmpeg project’s documented build. Check the installed version and available encoders before choosing options:

ffmpeg -versionFFmpeg’s documentation is the authority for the syntax supported by your installed build, including the concat demuxer and input looping. A command written for one build or media set may not work unchanged on another.
2. Put the media on the VPS and define playback order
Upload the source files to VPS storage and create a file list or another playlist arrangement supported by your FFmpeg workflow. Decide the order, whether the list repeats when it reaches the end, how new files enter rotation, and what should happen if a file is missing or unreadable. Test transitions and audio/video synchronization; a playlist that works for one file is not automatically a robust multi-file rotation.
3. Decide whether to copy or transcode
Stream-copying can reduce CPU use when files have compatible codecs, frame rates, resolutions, audio layouts, and container characteristics. A mixed library may need normalization through transcoding. Do not assume one copy command will handle arbitrary files: validate a representative playlist and check the output for discontinuities, missing audio, or unsupported media.
Schedule the livestream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio → Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule stream.
- Reuse prior settings or create a new scheduled stream. Set the title, visibility, and other event metadata, then save the schedule.
- In Live Control Room, copy the event’s server URL and stream key into the VPS encoder configuration. Treat the stream key like a password: do not place it in a public script, repository, log, or screenshot.
- Start the VPS encoder and check that YouTube receives the feed. When the event configuration requires it, confirm the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room.
- Monitor both the VPS process and YouTube’s stream-health indicator after launch.
YouTube says first-time live streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete account and event setup before the planned start. Its encoder guidance also recommends testing the stream and monitoring health (YouTube Help: encoder settings and Live Control Room).

Match YouTube’s ingest settings and plan bandwidth
YouTube currently recommends RTMPS where supported. Its settings for RTMP/RTMPS list H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); up to 60 fps; and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Follow the current settings shown for your chosen codec and resolution in YouTube’s live encoder settings.
For H.264, YouTube’s current recommended bitrate ranges include:

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not minimum VPS plan specifications. Choose a bitrate appropriate to your output and confirm that the VPS can sustain it continuously with headroom for protocol overhead, other traffic, and interruptions. For transcoding, CPU demand depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, preset, and concurrent streams; stream-copying or remuxing can require a different compute profile. Check the provider’s current transfer limits, regional network, and pricing before buying. There is no universal VPS size or price for every playlist and output.
Keep the process running and verify it
Run FFmpeg under a service manager such as systemd so it can start at boot and restart if the process exits. A restart policy helps recover from an encoder failure; it does not guarantee that YouTube remains connected or that the event is live. Add monitoring, inspect logs without exposing the stream key, and check Live Control Room for stream-health errors.

- Confirm the VPS has enough storage for uploaded media and any local recording you plan to keep.
- Watch the YouTube preview and health status after connecting the encoder, and recheck them during operation.
- Keep recovery steps available: verify the network and encoder process, check the event’s stream key and server URL, and restart the feed only after identifying the likely cause.
Plan the schedule and archive separately
A scheduled event can be promoted and viewers may receive reminders, but scheduling does not automate the VPS or guarantee the event will be public and receiving a feed. Connect the encoder near the scheduled start, confirm the preview, and start the event as configured.
Do not rely on a single multi-day event as your only VOD copy. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local archive as a backup (YouTube Help: archive live streams). If durable recordings matter, record separately or plan shorter events, then verify the resulting archives in Studio.
Protect rights and understand monetization limits
Use only video and music you have the necessary rights to stream. YouTube’s live-stream terms state: “The Live Content must comply with the YouTube Community Guidelines.” They also require the provider to have the necessary rights for the live content, including music licensing rights (YouTube livestream terms and conditions).
Automation and watch time do not guarantee monetization. In its July 15, 2025 policy update, YouTube clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material is “inauthentic content”; the policy applies to livestreams and such content is ineligible under channel monetization policies (YouTube channel monetization policies). Make originality, meaningful variation, and rights clearance part of the programming plan. Whether a particular channel or stream qualifies depends on YouTube’s review.

Common VPS playlist problems and fixes
YouTube receives no video
Check that FFmpeg is running, the VPS can reach the ingest server, and the encoder uses the server URL and key for the scheduled event. If the key was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the private encoder configuration.
The playlist stops at the first file
Check the file-list syntax, path accessibility, and whether the chosen concat or loop behavior actually repeats the playlist. Test the exact installed FFmpeg build with the actual files; input ordering and demuxer options matter.
Files play inconsistently or lose audio
Mixed codecs, frame rates, resolutions, audio layouts, and containers can make stream-copying unreliable. Normalize incompatible inputs and test the resulting transitions before leaving the process unattended.
The stream drops or reports poor health
Compare the sustained outbound capacity with the selected bitrate and allow network headroom. Check VPS logs and YouTube’s health indicator, then adjust bitrate or investigate provider network interruptions. A systemd restart can bring back an exited process but cannot by itself diagnose a failing network or YouTube event.

The stream is live but no archive appears
Check the stream duration and archive status in YouTube Studio. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured; use a separate recording or shorter planned events when preserving a VOD is important.
