What each payment is for
Super Chat: a highlighted message that supports the creator
Viewers buy a Super Chat to make a message stand out in live chat; it may be pinned. Super Chat and Super Stickers are fan-funding features available on eligible live streams and Premieres. YouTube’s policy is explicit: “You should be aware that Super Chat and Super Stickers aren’t crowdfunding or donation tools.” People may casually call a Super Chat a donation, but the purchase is not a charitable contribution.
YouTube Giving: a contribution to a nonprofit
An eligible creator can add a YouTube Giving fundraiser to a live stream. With live chat enabled, viewers can select the Donate control and choose an amount. They can choose whether their username is displayed publicly; otherwise, the donation appears anonymously. YouTube says Google partners with Network for Good to collect and distribute donations at Google’s request.

The two percentages describe different recipients and different calculation bases, so they are not a like-for-like comparison. The Super Chat 70% figure is not necessarily 70% of the viewer’s checkout total: YouTube calculates it after the stated tax and iOS App Store deductions. These are YouTube Help’s published terms, checked in 2026.

Can a livestream have both?
No. When a stream has a YouTube Giving fundraiser, YouTube turns off Super Chat and Super Stickers to avoid confusion. Super Chat and Super Stickers also require live chat or comments to be enabled. A creator choosing a fundraiser should therefore expect viewers to use its Donate control rather than Supers.
Eligibility and availability
Super Chat
YouTube’s listed fan-funding requirements include YouTube Partner Program membership, being at least 18, living where the feature is available, and accepting applicable terms. Super Chat is unavailable on age-restricted, unlisted, private, or made-for-kids videos, and on videos with YouTube Giving fundraisers. Live chat or comments must not be turned off. Regional availability and terms can change, so check YouTube Help and the channel’s Studio Earn or Supers controls.

YouTube Giving
YouTube’s Giving FAQ lists fundraiser setup requirements including an eligible location, at least 10,000 subscribers, YouTube Partner Program membership, and a channel not designated as made for kids. Check the current YouTube Help location list and Studio controls before planning a fundraiser; eligibility may change.
What if the creator uses an external donation link?
An external link is not the same as YouTube Giving. The recipient, fees, payment handling, tax treatment, and refund rules depend on the outside service and the creator’s setup. YouTube’s statements that it covers transaction fees and that the nonprofit receives 100% apply to YouTube Giving, not automatically to a third-party link.
