YouTube Studio can schedule livestream events, but its documented workflow does not automatically switch between separate daytime and nighttime playlists on a recurring timetable. To do that, use a streaming setup that explicitly supports timed playlist changes—or schedule separate events and start each transmission yourself. First decide whether viewers need one continuous broadcast or can move between two events; that choice determines the right setup.
Decide what “24/7” should look like to viewers
There are two different outcomes people often mean by a day/night schedule:
- Two separate events: a daytime event and a nighttime event have their own start times and playlists. Viewers may need to open a new event when the program changes.
- One continuous event: a single YouTube broadcast stays open while its video source changes from the daytime playlist to the nighttime playlist on a repeating timetable. This requires an encoder or service that explicitly supports timed playlist transitions.
YouTube’s encoder help explains how to schedule an event and start transmission, but does not document a recurring timetable that switches playlists within one broadcast. The reviewed YouTube Live Streaming API reference describes broadcast and stream resources, not a ready-made playlist player or automatic playlist-switching feature. Do not assume that scheduling two events will create an uninterrupted viewer experience.
Option 1: Schedule separate events in YouTube Studio
Choose this approach if two distinct broadcasts are acceptable and someone or some automation can start each transmission at its scheduled time. YouTube says, “Scheduling a stream lets you promote your stream”; viewers can get reminders and you can share each event URL.

- Open YouTube Studio’s encoder livestream workflow and enter the Live Control Room.
- Open Manage and choose Schedule stream.
- Create an event or reuse prior settings. Make a separate event for each program if the daytime and nighttime broadcasts need different event details or playlists.
- Share each scheduled event URL in advance so viewers can find the right program and set a reminder.
- At each scheduled start, connect the encoder using the server URL and stream key shown in the Live Control Room, then start transmission. Wait for the preview and select Go live as described in YouTube’s encoder workflow.
Scheduling the event does not, in the documented workflow, start a local encoder or select and switch its media automatically. Plan who or what will start each transmission and how viewers will move to the next event.
Option 2: Use a service with prerecorded-video playlists
A cloud playlist service can send uploaded video to YouTube without requiring your own computer to stay online after setup and start. But “24/7” does not guarantee the specific behavior you need. Before choosing a provider, confirm whether it can repeat a separate day/night schedule, what happens at the playlist boundary, whether the broadcast remains one YouTube event, and how it handles a dropped connection.

These services’ described features and limits are not interchangeable. Confirm current plan requirements and the exact schedule behavior with the provider before committing to a workflow.
Option 3: Build custom scheduling with the YouTube Live Streaming API
The API represents scheduled events as liveBroadcast resources and outgoing transmissions as liveStream resources; a live stream can be bound to multiple broadcasts. That resource model can support custom scheduling software, but it does not supply the playlist player that reads your files or prove that playlist changes happen automatically. Compare continuity, limits, and equipment before choosing
- Continuity: Ask whether a playlist change leaves one YouTube event open or ends one event and starts another.
- Schedule granularity: Check whether the service supports recurring day/night times and the relevant time zone, rather than only a one-time start.
- Playlist capacity: Check maximum duration, number of videos, and storage against both playlists.
- Starting and recovery: Determine whether streams start automatically and what happens after an interruption or YouTube disconnect.
- Equipment: YouTube’s encoder workflow uses an encoder, server URL, and stream key. Cloud playback can remove the need to keep a personal computer online after setup, depending on the service and workflow.
- Policy and rights: Make sure you have the rights to the videos, music, and other material you broadcast, and review YouTube’s rules for live content. A scheduled or prerecorded format does not itself establish permission to use material.

Troubleshooting a day/night schedule
The event is scheduled, but nothing is live
Scheduling creates the event; the documented encoder flow still requires the encoder to connect and transmit at the start. Check that the encoder is running with the correct server URL and stream key, then wait for the preview and select Go live.

The playlist changes, but the broadcast ends or viewers need a new link
The provider may be creating separate events rather than changing media inside one continuous event. Ask whether a playlist boundary keeps the same YouTube broadcast open, and test the boundary before advertising a seamless stream.
The daytime playlist runs into the nighttime slot
Check whether the scheduler supports a repeating timetable and what it does when a playlist runs long. Confirm the schedule’s time zone, playlist duration, and transition behavior with the provider; do not assume a general looping feature means a timed switch is supported.
The stream stops after a limited period
Check the provider’s maximum run duration and plan requirements. For example, OneStream Live’s help page states a 30-day maximum for its 24/7 feature, while Restream documents playlists capped at 24 hours.
