Those are only the local parts of the workflow: schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio, use that event’s current ingest URL and stream key, then verify the YouTube preview and complete the platform’s live transition if prompted. A timer firing and FFmpeg running do not, by themselves, prove that viewers can watch the broadcast.
Understand the three parts of the setup
A scheduled YouTube stream involves three separate pieces:
- The broadcast event: the viewer-facing scheduled stream and watch page created in YouTube Studio.
- The encoder feed: the audio and video FFmpeg sends to YouTube using the event’s stream URL and key.
- The local schedule: a systemd timer that activates a service, which runs FFmpeg on the Linux host.
Google’s [YouTube Live Streaming API reference](https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/live/docs?hl=en) distinguishes broadcast resources from stream resources that carry the encoder content. In practice, treat the event and the incoming feed as related but distinct: starting FFmpeg does not establish that the feed is attached to the intended event or that YouTube has made it viewer-live.
Schedule the event and get its current ingest details
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, choose Manage, and select Schedule stream. Set the event’s title, visibility, start time, and other available settings. YouTube’s labels and account features can change, so follow the current controls shown in your account. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Open the scheduled event’s stream settings and copy the current server URL and stream key. Do not reuse an endpoint or key from an old event without checking that it is still the correct one.
- Where YouTube offers it for the event, prefer the RTMPS endpoint shown in Live Control Room. RTMPS encrypts the ingest connection; use the URL provided by YouTube rather than guessing a hostname, path, or port. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Keep the stream key private. Do not paste a real key into a public script, repository, support post, or article. Store it in a file readable only by the service account or use a restricted credential mechanism supported by your Linux distribution.
YouTube’s documented encoder workflow has the operator wait for the preview and click Go live. Check how your account handles a scheduled event when an encoder connects; do not assume that a systemd timer can perform this platform-side transition.

Prepare and test the playlist with FFmpeg
Choose a playlist method
For a fixed sequence of local files, one practical pattern is an FFmpeg concat-demuxer list. Create a plain text file with one entry per media file, for example:
file '/srv/youtube-playlist/part-01.mp4'
file '/srv/youtube-playlist/part-02.mp4'
Use absolute paths, preserve the order you want, and make sure the Linux account that will run FFmpeg can read both the list and every media file. The concat demuxer has media compatibility requirements; a list that parses successfully is not proof that dissimilar files will join cleanly. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the installed version and the relevant demuxer, muxer, protocol, and command options.
There is no single playlist command that is safe for every file set and FFmpeg build. Test the actual playlist and output settings interactively before putting the command under systemd. If the files are not compatible for stream copying, configure a suitable transcode for the input codecs and desired output; test for smooth transitions, correct audio, and sustained operation. Do not assume a command that works for one clip will handle the complete playlist.

Build the encoder command without exposing the key
Use the exact ingest URL and key from the scheduled event. A command should read the intended playlist, produce a YouTube-compatible live feed for the event’s selected resolution and frame rate, and send it to that endpoint. Keep the command in the foreground so systemd can track the FFmpeg process. The values below are placeholders, not a ready-to-run command:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →ffmpeg [tested input and playlist options]
[tested video and audio output options]
-f flv "[current YouTube ingest URL]/[secret stream key]"
Do not copy the bracketed text literally. Select the actual options for your media and FFmpeg version, and protect the key from shell history and process listings where your environment allows. If credentials are placed in a separate configuration file, restrict its ownership and permissions and confirm the service can read it. The FFmpeg all-in-one documentation is version-sensitive; check the documentation matching your installed build rather than relying on an old command from a blog.
Test the feed before scheduling it
- Run the tested FFmpeg command manually under the same Linux user, with the same working directory and file access that the service will use.
- Watch FFmpeg’s output for input, encoding, and connection errors, but do not treat process activity or increasing counters as proof of healthy YouTube playback.
- In Live Control Room, confirm that the correct event receives the feed, inspect the preview and stream health, and follow the event’s current Go live workflow.
- Confirm that the intended picture, sound, order, and loop behavior are correct before making the setup unattended.
Create a systemd service for FFmpeg
The service describes the long-running process; the timer described next schedules its activation. Create a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-playlist.service with the tested command and the correct account, paths, and working directory. This is a structure to adapt, not a verified drop-in unit:

Replace the example user, paths, binary location, and command with values verified on the target host. Confirm how your distribution provides network-online behavior; that ordering is not a guarantee that the connection to YouTube is available at the instant FFmpeg starts. Keep FFmpeg in the foreground. A restart policy can relaunch a process that exits, but it cannot detect every case in which FFmpeg remains alive while the platform playback is stalled.
Protect any key-bearing file with restrictive ownership and permissions, and avoid printing the key in diagnostic output. After changing unit files, tell systemd to reload them with sudo systemctl daemon-reload. Start the service once for a manual validation and inspect it with sudo systemctl status youtube-playlist.service and sudo journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service.

Create and enable the calendar timer
Create /etc/systemd/system/youtube-playlist.timer. An OnCalendar entry expresses a wall-clock schedule and a timer with the matching base name activates the service:

Description=Start YouTube playlist encoder on schedule
[Timer]
OnCalendar=[calendar expression for your intended start]
[Install]
WantedBy=timers.target
Replace the bracketed expression with a calendar expression valid for the installed systemd version. The example deliberately does not prescribe a date, timezone, recurrence, missed-run policy, or timer accuracy: those choices depend on the intended schedule and host. Validate the syntax and semantics using the systemd manuals installed on your distribution. The available systemd example is a 2019 project mailing-list discussion, not a current exhaustive reference: systemd-devel timer example.
- After saving both units, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable and start the timer with
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-playlist.timer. - Check the timer with
systemctl list-timers youtube-playlist.timerandsystemctl status youtube-playlist.timer. Confirm the displayed next activation matches the schedule and timezone you intended. - After its scheduled activation, inspect
sudo systemctl status youtube-playlist.serviceandsudo journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service, then verify the event in Live Control Room.
A timer schedules local service activation; it is not a playlist manager, media validator, YouTube event creator, or viewer-side health monitor. If a scheduled run is missed because the host is off, behavior depends on the timer directives and systemd version you configure. Confirm those semantics on the target machine rather than assuming the job will run immediately at boot.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan what “24/7” means for the broadcast
Do not treat “24/7” as proof that one YouTube event can run forever. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this is an archive threshold, not a promise that a stream near that length will be uninterrupted or evidence that an event can remain live indefinitely. The available platform guidance does not settle a universal event duration or handoff strategy. Check the current behavior of your account and design an explicit event and restart plan.

Decide whether each scheduled start uses a new event or a continuing event workflow, who will complete any platform-side Go live action, and how the next event or handoff will be handled. A timer that starts the encoder cannot create a seamless transition between YouTube events on its own.
Choose a host and recovery approach
| Choice | What it changes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Home Linux machine | The stream depends on that computer, its power, and its internet connection remaining available. | Power and network continuity, storage access, user permissions, and whether the machine will be on before the timer fires. |
| Linux VPS | The encoder runs on a remote host instead of a home machine. | Administration, media storage and transfer, connectivity, recurring server cost, and the host’s timezone and schedule. |
| Restart after process failure | A service restart policy can respond when FFmpeg exits unsuccessfully. | Whether the new process reconnects to the intended event and whether YouTube playback actually resumes. |
| Additional monitoring and planned checks | Human or external checks can catch failures that a live local process does not reveal. | Who checks the preview and playback, how often, and how the operator responds to a stalled feed or event transition. |
An operator’s public 24/7 streaming repository describes an instance where local FFmpeg activity did not reveal frozen platform playback, along with that author’s recovery measures. It is an individual operations report, not an official recommendation or proof that every deployment encounters the same failure. Its useful lesson is to check YouTube playback and stream health, not just the Linux process.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The timer does not appear or activate: check for unit syntax errors, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadafter edits, inspectsystemctl status youtube-playlist.timer, and confirm the next run shown bysystemctl list-timers youtube-playlist.timer. Verify the calendar expression against the installed systemd documentation. - The service starts but FFmpeg exits: inspect
sudo journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service. Check the FFmpeg binary path, service user, working directory, input paths, file permissions, and whether the command succeeds when run under that same user. - FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube: confirm the event’s current ingest URL and key in Live Control Room. Check that the selected RTMPS endpoint and protocol match YouTube’s current settings and review YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance, including its applicable server-address and port guidance.
- The feed is connected but the event is not viewer-live: check that FFmpeg is feeding the intended scheduled event, wait for YouTube’s preview, and follow the current platform workflow, including Go live if shown.
- The service is active but viewers report a freeze: compare the actual YouTube playback and Live Control Room health with the local journal. A running process alone does not verify that the platform is receiving healthy, advancing media.
- The playlist stops or transitions badly: test every file in sequence with the same FFmpeg build and options used by systemd. Check list paths, permissions, file compatibility, and the loop method rather than assuming that a successful first clip validates the full playlist.
- The broadcast ends or needs a handoff: check the current event behavior and archive status in YouTube Studio, then follow the restart or next-event plan you prepared. The under-12-hour archive statement does not define an indefinite single-event workflow.
