An OBS encoder error can mean different things: OBS may be unable to start output, your computer may be overloaded while encoding, or the stream may be disconnecting because of an unstable network or an incompatible format. First note the exact OBS and YouTube Live Control Room messages; then follow the matching fix below instead of changing several settings at once.

Identify where the YouTube stream is failing

Before changing settings, write down the exact OBS error, when it appears, and the time shown for any message in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. “Error starting your encoder,” “OBS starting the output failed,” encoding overload, and dropped frames point to different diagnostic branches; the wording alone does not prove the root cause.

In Live Control Room, check the stream-health indicator and its timestamped messages. YouTube classifies red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate. A message that persists will continue to appear, so note whether it clears after a change.

What you see Likely branch First useful check
OBS cannot start the third-party encoder or output to YouTube Stream key or software integration Refresh the stream key in Live Control Room and update OBS. If OBS signs in without a stream key, contact the streaming software provider.
OBS starts, but output is choppy or reports encoding overload Local rendering or encoding capacity Check CPU and GPU load, then reduce competing workload, scene complexity, resolution, or frame rate.
OBS starts, but frames are dropped or the stream disconnects Network path or ingest stability Check bitrate, server, Wi-Fi, VPN or security software, drivers, and network equipment.
YouTube reports “Incorrect stream format” Ingest format configuration For this error, YouTube says to use H.264 video with AAC audio.
OBS preview or local recording looks healthy, but viewers do not receive a stable stream Outbound connection or YouTube ingest path Test the outbound connection and inspect Live Control Room health messages.

These are signposts, not proof. A healthy local preview or recording helps distinguish a local source or encoding problem from an outbound connection problem, but still check YouTube’s health messages.

If OBS cannot start the encoder or output

Refresh the YouTube stream key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room for the stream.
  2. Open the Stream section and copy the current stream key.
  3. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select the YouTube service, and replace the existing key with the current one. Confirm the server and service settings, then apply the changes.
  4. Try starting the stream again and check Live Control Room for a new health message.

YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to get a new key in Live Control Room and update the encoder when a third-party encoder cannot connect. Treat the key as a password: do not share it or include it in screenshots or logs sent publicly. See YouTube’s live-streaming error troubleshooting.

Update OBS and check the integration

YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version. If OBS is configured to sign into YouTube without a manually entered key and the connection still cannot start, YouTube advises contacting the streaming software provider because the integration may need an update. Do not repeatedly reset unrelated video settings when the failure occurs before output starts.

If OBS reports encoding overload or the video is choppy

Encoding overload means the computer is struggling to render or encode the selected output in time. OBS identifies GPU saturation or a bottleneck between the GPU and the rest of the system as possible causes. Look at CPU and GPU load while the stream is running; also inspect OBS’s preview and, if available, a local recording to see whether the problem is already present before the signal reaches YouTube.

  1. On Windows, run OBS as administrator. OBS Project suggests trying this first for GPU overload; the suggestion is specific to Windows and is not a fix for network-related dropped frames.
  2. Close known GPU-heavy applications. Keep only applications you need for the stream, and check whether the encoder warning changes.
  3. Reduce game workload. Cap the game’s frame rate, enable V-Sync, or lower graphics settings to leave more rendering capacity for OBS.
  4. Simplify the OBS scene. Remove unnecessary sources and reduce demanding filters or browser sources. Test after each meaningful change so you can identify what helped.
  5. Reduce output demand if necessary. Lower output resolution or frame rate. OBS specifically suggests reducing 60 fps to 30 fps when needed.

OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide covers GPU overload and related performance steps. If local video is fine but the connection drops, follow the network branch instead of continuing to lower graphics settings.

If OBS shows dropped frames or disconnects

In OBS’s connection guidance, dropped frames mean the path to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. This is not the same diagnosis as encoding overload: a GPU replacement will not fix a weak or interrupted network path.

  1. Check the selected server and bitrate. Confirm the intended YouTube service and ingest server are selected. Compare the configured bitrate with a stable upload connection, not just a best-case speed result.
  2. Use Ethernet where practical. Wi-Fi interference or signal changes can interrupt a stream. A wired connection is OBS’s preferred troubleshooting option where available.
  3. Review network software. Temporarily investigate VPNs, security software, or network-optimization utilities that may interfere with the connection. Change one item at a time and restore protections after testing.
  4. Check drivers and equipment. Review network adapter drivers, modem/router operation, and cabling. Restarting equipment may help isolate a transient issue, but it does not establish the underlying cause.
  5. Use OBS’s bitrate heuristic cautiously. OBS suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when diagnosing dropped frames. This is a troubleshooting heuristic, not a YouTube bitrate guarantee or a substitute for YouTube’s format-specific recommendations.
  6. Contact your ISP if the path remains unstable. If these checks do not resolve the issue, ask the provider to investigate upload stability or interruptions.

See the OBS dropped-frames and network troubleshooting guide. A speed test alone does not prove that the route to YouTube’s ingest server will remain stable throughout a live event.

Check YouTube’s supported format and bitrate settings

Compare OBS’s selected output with YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the exact message in Live Control Room. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. OBS’s available encoder and codec choices depend on its version and the computer’s hardware, so use options actually available in your configuration.

If YouTube specifically reports “Incorrect stream format,” its error reference calls for H.264 video and AAC audio. Do not assume that this is the right change for an encoding-overload warning or dropped frames; those symptoms have different likely causes.

YouTube’s current settings page gives recommended H.264 bitrate values by resolution and frame rate. These are configuration recommendations, not universal minimum connection speeds or measured guarantees:

Test before relying on the next live event

  1. Make a private or otherwise low-risk test stream using the same resolution, frame rate, audio, motion, and scenes planned for the real event.
  2. Watch the OBS output and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health indicator while the test runs.
  3. Review timestamped health messages and confirm the stream remains stable after any change.
  4. If a new failure appears, record its exact text and time rather than making several additional changes at once.

YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the real stream, monitoring stream health, and reviewing messages. Consult its encoder setup and troubleshooting guidance when validating the configuration.

Troubleshoot copyright and reused-content risks separately

An encoder error is a technical delivery problem; it does not establish whether the video is permitted to stream or eligible for monetization. Use only material you have the rights or permission to broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before resuming with third-party music, gameplay, or other content. Copyright claims and reused-content decisions are separate from OBS’s encoder and connection diagnostics. Stream health alone does not establish content rights or monetization eligibility.

When to escalate, and what to include

If the issue persists, send support the exact OBS error or relevant OBS log details, operating system, OBS version, selected encoder and stream format, and the timestamped YouTube dashboard message. Remove or redact the stream key and other credentials first. This information helps distinguish a failure to start output from local overload, an unsupported format, or an unstable route to ingest.
