To schedule a YouTube playlist rotation on Ubuntu, write a script that uses the YouTube Data API to make the change you want, then add that script to the intended Ubuntu user’s crontab. Cron only runs commands on a schedule; it has no built-in playlist-rotation operation. First decide whether “rotation” means reordering existing items or removing and re-adding them, because those actions have different effects.
Decide what “rotation” should do
YouTube provides methods to read and manage playlists and their items, but no single API call named “rotate.” Your script must define the policy: which item or items to move, where they should go, and how often the change should happen. See Google’s PlaylistItems API reference for the available methods.
Reorder an existing item
If you want to keep the same playlist entry and change its position, use the API’s update operation to set its position. This preserves the existing playlist item rather than deleting it and creating another one. The exact item-selection and ordering logic is yours to define.
Remove and re-add an item
If your intended rotation means removing an entry and adding it again, use the delete and insert operations. This changes the playlist item rather than simply moving the existing entry. Consider whether the video is already present and whether adding it again would create an unwanted duplicate. Do not choose this approach merely because it sounds like “rotation”; define the desired outcome first.

Prepare authorized YouTube API access

Create or select a Google Cloud project, enable the YouTube Data API, and configure OAuth 2.0 authorization. Google’s YouTube Data API overview describes the project and authorization setup.

Use an OAuth scope that permits the playlist change you intend to make. The documented insert method accepts scopes including
youtube,youtube.force-ssl, andyoutubepartner; use the scope appropriate to your application and account. -
Use a Google-supported client library and follow the current authentication instructions for its installed version. The credential must be usable by the scheduled process after its initial authorization. Protect token and client credential files so other local users cannot read them, and verify the library’s token-refresh behavior before relying on unattended runs.

Do not use a read-only API key for playlist writes. Insert and delete require authorized requests. For deletion, use the playlist-item ID returned by the API, not the video ID.

The insert method’s documented purpose is to “Adds a resource to a playlist.” That request needs a body identifying the playlist and resource. Consult the current insert, delete, and update references for request details and required fields.
Account for API quota
Google’s quota documentation assigns playlistItems.list 1 unit per call and playlistItems.insert and playlistItems.delete 50 units each. The YouTube Data API overview reports a default allocation of 10,000 units per day for most endpoints, combined; projects can have different allocations, and quota policy can change. These figures are shown on Google’s documentation retrieved October 3, 2026, which does not state a publication date for the figures.
Estimate the calls your policy makes per run, then multiply by the number of scheduled runs per day. A simple read-and-reorder workflow uses list and update calls; a remove-and-reinsert workflow incurs the documented 50-unit cost for each delete and insert, in addition to any reads. Check the current quota for your project before increasing the rotation frequency.
Test the script as the crontab owner

Save the script at a stable path, for example

Run it directly as that account from a terminal. Confirm that it selects the intended item, makes the intended change, and handles authorization or API errors without repeating destructive actions.

Create a writable log directory, such as
/home/ubuntu/logs. Use explicit paths for the interpreter, script, credentials, and any files the script reads or writes. -
Check that repeat runs produce the intended sequence and do not add unwanted duplicates. Do not schedule the job until the direct run and its output are understood.
Add the recurring job to cron
Edit the crontab for the Ubuntu account that should own and run the job, using crontab -e as that account. A crontab line has five schedule fields—minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week—followed by the command. For example, this template runs daily at 08:15 according to the cron schedule’s timezone:

Replace ubuntu, interpreter, script, and log paths with the values on your machine. Ensure the log directory exists and is writable by the crontab owner. Redirecting both standard output and errors to the log makes failures retrievable even if local mail delivery is not configured.
Environment and time zone
Cron runs a job non-interactively as the owner of the crontab, so do not assume it inherits the shell’s working directory, interactive profile, or full PATH. Use absolute paths and explicitly provide any environment variables or working-directory setup the script requires. The Ubuntu Noble cron manual documents defaults such as SHELL, LOGNAME, and HOME, and describes CRON_TZ for scheduling entries in a specified timezone. Verify the cron package and Ubuntu release installed before relying on a timezone directive. In the Ubuntu Jammy cron manual, TZ affects the command environment, not the schedule itself. Cron checks entries every minute; the schedule is not a guarantee of second-level timing.
Troubleshoot missed or failed rotations

The script works in a terminal but not under cron: Run it as the crontab owner and compare its environment with cron’s non-interactive environment. Add explicit paths and required environment configuration, then inspect the redirected log.

Authorization fails or expires: Confirm the script is using OAuth credentials with a write-capable scope, that the crontab owner can read the credential files, and that the chosen client library can refresh tokens unattended. Reauthorize using that library’s current guidance if needed.

Deletion targets the wrong identifier: Pass the playlist-item ID returned by the API to the delete method; a video ID alone is not the deletion identifier.

The playlist has duplicates or an unexpected order: Revisit the rotation policy and selection logic. Reordering and delete-and-reinsert are distinct operations; verify the playlist state before retrying a write.

The job appears not to run: Check that the entry is in the intended user’s crontab, verify the five schedule fields, and inspect the log plus the system cron log or journal available on that Ubuntu release.

A startup job fails after reboot: Do not assume
