Use Node-RED to run a time-zone-aware schedule, then call YouTube’s Data API to add or remove playlist videos. Node-RED handles when the rotation runs; YouTube’s API performs the playlist changes. Before building the flow, decide which videos should be added or removed at each trigger—there is no universal rotation policy.
Choose the rotation rule and schedule
First define what “rotation” means for your channel. For example, you might add a selected video at a chosen local time, remove an older playlist entry, or perform both operations. Decide which video is selected, what happens when the playlist is empty or already contains it, and whether the playlist should have a maximum length. These are policy choices your flow must implement.
For scheduling, the community package node-red-contrib-cron-plus documents cron and date schedules, dynamic schedule control, time-zone support, and persistent schedule state. Its Flow Library listing identifies version 3.2.0; package versions and behavior can change, so check the current documentation before depending on a feature.
Set the intended time zone
Choose UTC or a region/area time zone deliberately. If the rotation should follow local wall-clock time, use the relevant regional zone rather than assuming a fixed UTC offset. Cron-plus documents that a repeated local time during a daylight-saving transition fires once; if a forward clock change skips the scheduled time, the schedule runs as soon as possible after the transition.

Choose how the flow will change the playlist
You have two implementation routes: use a community YouTube node only if you verify it supports the write operations you need, or call the YouTube Data API from Node-RED with authenticated HTTP requests. The node-red-node-youtube Flow Library listing identifies version 0.0.5 and documents nodes for listing channels, playlists, and playlist items. Its public description does not establish playlist write support, so do not treat it as a confirmed end-to-end rotation solution.

Build the scheduled rotation flow
- Create and configure a schedule. In Node-RED, install and configure cron-plus, then create a cron or date schedule for the rotation. Set the schedule’s time zone and, if you rely on state surviving a restart, configure persistent schedule state according to the package documentation.
- Authorize API access. Set up OAuth for the Google account that can edit the target playlist. Use an allowed OAuth scope listed in the API reference for the operation you plan to perform. A schedule trigger by itself does not grant permission to edit YouTube data.
- List the current playlist items. At each trigger, query the target playlist’s items and retain the destination playlist ID and each returned playlist-item ID. Decide from the results which video to add or which playlist entry to remove.
- Insert a video when the policy calls for it. Call
playlistItems.insertwith the destination playlist ID and the video resource ID in the request body. The video ID is not the playlist-item ID. - Delete an entry when the policy calls for it. Call
playlistItems.deleteusing the playlist-item ID returned for the entry you intend to remove—not the video ID. - Record results and stop on ambiguous failures. Log the scheduled time, operation, target identifiers, response status, and error details. If a request times out or returns an ambiguous error, check the playlist state before retrying; blind repeated writes can produce duplicates or remove the wrong entry.
OAuth, identifiers, and API limits to account for
Use the right identifier for each operation
An insert needs the destination playlist ID and the video resource ID in its request body. A delete needs the playlist-item ID, which identifies the particular entry in the playlist and differs from the video ID. Preserve both kinds of IDs in your flow instead of treating them as interchangeable.

Authorize writes and handle API errors
The YouTube API references for insert and delete list the OAuth scopes allowed for those calls. The API can return authorization failures, missing IDs or resources, duplicate playlist videos, unsupported playlist operations, or a maximum-item condition. Branch on the response and log enough information to diagnose the failure; do not assume every scheduled trigger succeeded.
Budget quota for scheduled writes
Google’s YouTube Data API documentation, accessed October 3, 2026, lists a cost of 50 quota units per playlistItems.insert call and 50 per playlistItems.delete call. The API guide reports a default allowance of 10,000 units per day combined for other endpoints and says default quota may change. Check the current API reference and your project’s quota console before setting a frequent schedule; listing playlist contents and other API calls also affect quota.

Test the flow and troubleshoot failures
Before relying on a recurring schedule, test with a playlist you can safely edit. Confirm the trigger’s time and time zone, inspect the list response, and verify that an insert or delete changes only the intended entry. Check the playlist again after any uncertain response before retrying.
- The schedule fires at the wrong time: Check the cron expression and the configured time zone. A fixed UTC schedule will not necessarily stay at the same local time when daylight-saving rules change.
- The schedule does not survive a restart: Check the cron-plus persistent schedule configuration and the Node-RED host’s persistence setup.
- The API reports an authorization failure: Confirm that OAuth was completed for an account with permission to edit the playlist, that the token is valid, and that the selected scope allows the write operation.
- An insert adds an unexpected duplicate or fails: Re-check the playlist before retrying and implement the duplicate policy you chose. The API documents duplicate-video errors; do not blindly repeat an insert after an unclear response.
- A delete fails or targets the wrong item: Confirm that the request uses the playlist-item ID for the specific entry, not the video ID, and that the item still exists in the intended playlist.
- The API reports a missing resource, unsupported operation, or maximum-item condition: Inspect the response and current playlist state, then adjust the chosen rotation rule or target before resuming.
- The flow reaches quota limits: Reduce unnecessary reads or write frequency and check current project quota details. Scheduled retries can add calls without fixing the underlying error.
Keep playlist rotation separate from livestreaming
This flow schedules changes to a YouTube playlist; it does not by itself keep a livestream running.
