YouTube’s scheduled-event feature does not choose an FFmpeg playlist for you.
How the three parts fit together
- FFmpeg controls media order. A concat-demuxer list tells FFmpeg which files to read, and in what order.
- Your scheduler controls the clock. A script, operating-system scheduler, or other orchestration system decides which list or FFmpeg process to start at a given time. This is a separate implementation choice, not a built-in time-of-day selector in FFmpeg or YouTube Studio.
- YouTube controls the broadcast event. A scheduled event provides an event page and broadcast settings. It does not launch a particular playlist.
For example, a gaming channel might want one playlist during the day and a different one overnight. The scheduler must handle that change; the YouTube event alone will not.
Prepare one concat list for each playlist
Create a text file for each intended sequence. For example, a list named day.txt could contain:

file '/media/gameplay-3.mp4'Make another file, such as night.txt, with the overnight sequence. The concat demuxer reads the listed files in order, as though their packets had been muxed together. A typical invocation is:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i day.txt -c copy -f flv "YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"Replace the input list and ingest URL/key with your own values. Keep the stream key private. The -safe 0 option permits paths that the concat demuxer’s default safe mode may reject; use it only when you control and trust the list contents. Safer relative paths and the default safe mode are preferable where practical.
Make the files compatible
The concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, codecs, and time base. A command using -c copy does not re-encode to make mismatched media compatible. If the files differ, standardize them before scheduling or use a deliberate encoding workflow and test the resulting transition.
Check durations and transitions
Incorrect or estimated durations can cause gaps or artifacts. When a file’s reported duration is unsuitable, the concat list supports a duration directive to override it. Do not assume that concatenating arbitrary recordings produces a seamless handoff: test the actual files and sequence in the environment you plan to use.

Choose how to handle the time change
There is no single scheduler prescribed by FFmpeg or YouTube’s documented event workflow. Choose an external mechanism that can start the right list or process at the required local time and handle what happens to the outgoing stream.

Use this when you want the channel to remain in one live event while content changes. Your orchestration must arrange the transition: for example, it can run the daytime list and then start the overnight list when the first process finishes, or stop and relaunch the encoder at a clock-defined boundary. The exact handoff depends on your chosen scheduler and deployment; test whether viewers see a brief interruption and whether YouTube keeps the event connected.
Separate scheduled events
Use this when each time block should have its own YouTube event. Create and schedule each event in YouTube Studio, then have your automation start the matching FFmpeg list with that event’s ingest URL and stream key. Confirm that the correct key is paired with the correct event before each start.

These are different operating models, not just two ways to name a playlist. A continuous broadcast emphasizes continuity; separate events give each block its own scheduled event. YouTube’s event scheduler does not perform the media switch in either model.
Schedule the YouTube event and connect FFmpeg
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room. Choose Manage, then Schedule stream, and create the event or reuse suitable settings.
- Record the event’s encoder details. Use the server URL and stream key associated with that event in your FFmpeg command or scheduler configuration. Treat the key as a credential, not as public configuration.
- Start the encoder at the intended time. Have your external scheduler select the appropriate concat list and launch the corresponding process.
- Check the preview in Live Control Room. YouTube’s workflow calls for waiting for the incoming stream preview and then going live when appropriate. Do not assume that creating a scheduled event starts FFmpeg or automatically selects your files.
For API-driven setups, Google models the broadcast event separately from the incoming media stream. Recurring events can reuse stream settings; another pattern creates a distinct liveStream resource for each broadcast. Choose based on whether the broadcasts share encoder settings and how your automation is organized. Google describes the distinction this way: “A stream enables you to transmit audio-video content to YouTube, and it defines the settings for how you stream your content.”
Plan the scheduler and hosting
The scheduler needs access to the media lists, the FFmpeg executable, and the relevant event configuration. It also needs to remain available at the times it must act. You can run it on equipment you control or arrange an always-on server; that is a deployment decision, not a feature guaranteed by FFmpeg or YouTube scheduling. Consider who will monitor failures, how the process will restart, and whether a clock change or time-zone setting could trigger the wrong playlist.

Copyright and channel policy checks
- Use recordings and music you own, licensed, or otherwise have permission to stream. A live broadcast can still raise copyright issues.
- Do not assume that scheduling or looping prerecorded gameplay makes it eligible for monetization. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your channel and content.
- Keep the stream useful and distinct rather than relying on unattended repetition alone. Your rights to the footage, music, overlays, and other included material are separate from the technical ability to send it to YouTube.
Troubleshooting common failures
The wrong playlist starts
Check the scheduler’s time zone, clock, configured list path, and event-to-key mapping. Log the selected playlist and launch time so you can identify whether the error came from scheduling or FFmpeg configuration.
FFmpeg rejects a list or file path
Check the concat file syntax and whether paths are valid from the process’s working directory. The concat demuxer’s default safe mode rejects unsafe paths and directives. Prefer safe relative paths; if you use -safe 0, restrict the list to trusted content.
The sequence has gaps, artifacts, or stops early
Confirm that the files have matching streams, codecs, and time base, and inspect reported durations. Correct unsuitable durations with the concat demuxer’s duration directive where needed, then test the full list rather than only its first transition.

YouTube does not show an incoming preview
Verify that FFmpeg is running, the configured server URL and stream key belong to the intended event, and the event is open in Live Control Room. Wait for the preview before taking the scheduled event live.
The scheduled switch interrupts the broadcast
A scheduler starting a second FFmpeg process does not by itself guarantee a seamless handoff. Test the chosen transition strategy and decide whether a brief interruption is acceptable or whether the content should instead be arranged as one continuous sequence.
