For a 1080p prerecorded video streamed to YouTube Live, match the encoder’s resolution and frame rate to the source, use CBR, set keyframes every 2 seconds, and choose the bitrate for both the codec and frame rate. YouTube’s current recommendations are 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30 or 17 Mbps at 1080p60; for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, they are 10 Mbps at 1080p30 or 12 Mbps at 1080p60. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. The repeat function belongs to the playback software or encoder workflow—not a YouTube Studio loop switch.
Recommended YouTube Live settings for 1080p
These are YouTube’s encoder-ingestion recommendations, checked in 2026. Select the row that matches the video codec you are sending and the source frame rate. The bitrate figures are video recommendations; add audio bitrate when estimating the total upload bandwidth.
| Source frame rate | H.264 video bitrate | AV1 or H.265/HEVC video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps recommended; 5 Mbps minimum | 10 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps recommended; 6 Mbps minimum | 12 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum |
Use the minimum figures as lower bounds in YouTube’s table, not as a promise of stable quality in every network or content condition. For a straightforward, widely supported workflow, H.264 is one documented choice; choose AV1 or H.265 only if your encoder can reliably output it and your workflow supports it.
Other encoder settings
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the prerecorded file where practical—1080p30 for a 30 fps source or 1080p60 for a 60 fps source. YouTube detects encoder settings automatically by default. Manual resolution and frame-rate selection is available with a custom stream key and manual settings.
- Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: Every 2 seconds is recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Ingest: RTMP or RTMPS; prefer RTMPS if your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as the secure extension to RTMP.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. YouTube’s advanced recommendations specify stereo, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps. Include an audio stream even if the video itself is silent; missing audio can be flagged as a stream configuration problem.
- SDR colour: Rec. 709, 8-bit. HDR has different guidance: YouTube recommends H.265 for HDR over RTMP(S), and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in that guidance.
How to loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder setup explains how to send a live feed, but the reviewed instructions do not describe a separate Studio setting that repeats a video. Configure the repeat in the software or encoder that plays the file, then send that output to YouTube as a live stream.

- Create or schedule the broadcast: In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live. Create or schedule the broadcast, or reuse previous stream settings if appropriate.
- Connect your encoder: In the Live Control Room, copy the Live server URL and stream key into your streaming software or encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it, and reset it if compromised.
- Load and loop the source: Add the prerecorded file as the playback source and enable repeat or loop in the playback software. Check that both picture and audio continue cleanly at the loop boundary; some files may have a pause, abrupt cut, or audio gap when they restart.
- Set the output: Match the source’s 1080p resolution and frame rate, select the corresponding codec bitrate from the table above, set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and choose RTMPS if available.
- Start sending, then inspect the preview: Start the encoder output and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Confirm visible video and audible sound before starting the public broadcast.
- Test and monitor: Test representative video and audio before the event. During the broadcast, watch the stream health indicators and messages for bitrate, audio, codec, keyframe, or video-starvation problems.
Upload bandwidth and stream stability
Your outgoing connection needs capacity for the full video-plus-audio bitrate, not just the video row in the table. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom. Other devices and applications sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder, so a speed test taken while the network is otherwise idle may overstate what the stream can sustain.
If you send a backup feed as well as the main feed, budget upload capacity for both. Before going live, test over the connection and with the content you will actually use. YouTube’s guidance puts it plainly: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

Loop length, DVR, and YouTube archives
YouTube’s setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived as one complete replay; plan around the stated limit and check current YouTube guidance if a long archive is important.
DVR is a viewer control for pausing and resuming a live stream, not a way to repeat the source video. Latency is the delay between the encoder and viewer playback. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering, so choose it based on the viewing experience you need rather than treating it as a loop setting.

Copyright and prerecorded content checks
A video playing as a live feed is still subject to YouTube’s rules. Before looping gameplay, music, commentary, or other material, make sure you have the rights or permission needed for the entire stream and any resulting archive. A game’s availability for streaming does not automatically clear its soundtrack or other third-party assets. Check the relevant rights and YouTube requirements before broadcasting; a copyright claim or restriction can disrupt the stream or affect its availability. Stream settings cannot make unlicensed content safe.
For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist. It is a checklist, not a substitute for permission from rights holders or YouTube’s policies.

Troubleshooting common 1080p loop-stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Buffering or unstable stream health | Insufficient upload capacity, competing network use, or a bitrate that the connection cannot sustain | Check the total video-plus-audio rate, leave about 20% headroom, reduce competing traffic, and test again. |
| Black screen, frozen picture, or video starvation | The playback source stopped, the loop did not restart cleanly, or the encoder is not sending continuous video | Confirm the file plays in the encoder, verify repeat is enabled in the playback software, and inspect the loop boundary. |
| No sound | Audio is missing, muted, routed to the wrong device, or encoded in an unsupported configuration | Confirm the source has an audio stream, verify encoder routing and levels, and use AAC or MP3 with the recommended stereo settings. |
| Codec or keyframe warning | The selected codec is unsupported in the workflow, or keyframes are too far apart | Use a supported H.264, H.265, or AV1 configuration and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, never over 4 seconds. |
| Encoder cannot connect | Incorrect server URL or stream key, or a mismatch between the encoder and ingest configuration | Copy the current server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room; protect the key and reset it if exposed. |
| Loop restarts with a visible or audible gap | The source player or file has a discontinuity at its end | Review the file’s end-to-start transition and test the exact playback and encoder setup before going live. |
