To play different prerecorded playlists at set times in an FFmpeg-powered YouTube stream, prepare a separate ordered concat list for each playlist, then use an external clock-based scheduler or wrapper to choose which list to run. FFmpeg can concatenate media; it does not, in the documented concat workflow, provide a complete wall-clock scheduler. YouTube Studio scheduling is a separate control: it schedules the broadcast event, not the playlist FFmpeg will read.
Separate the three scheduling jobs
A reliable setup treats these as distinct tasks:
- Build the sequence: FFmpeg reads a list of media files in the order you specify.
- Choose the sequence at a time: An external scheduler or wrapper starts the FFmpeg command that uses the intended list, or otherwise manages the process.
- Schedule the YouTube event: YouTube Studio or the YouTube Live API manages the broadcast event viewers can watch.
YouTube describes a broadcast as an event and a live stream as the configuration that carries audio and video. A stream can be reused for broadcasts at different times, while each broadcast is a distinct YouTube video. See YouTube’s broadcast and stream documentation.
Prepare a separate FFmpeg list for each playlist
1. Decide the sequences and start times
Write down which files belong in each playlist, their order, and when each playlist should begin. Keep one concat list per sequence—for example, a morning list and an evening list. This makes the scheduler’s choice explicit rather than relying on a single list that you must edit during a live run.
2. Check whether the files are compatible
The concat demuxer is the option to try when you want to join files without re-encoding, but the inputs must have matching streams, including codecs and time bases. Differences in stream layout or media properties can make that workflow unsuitable. FFmpeg also warns that files whose streams do not have exactly the same duration can produce gaps, and inaccurate stored duration can cause artifacts. 3. Create the concat list
Make a plain-text file with one file directive per input, in playback order. For example, save this as morning.txt:
file '/media/intro.mp4'
file '/media/level-one.mp4'
file '/media/level-two.mp4'Use paths that are valid from the machine and working environment where FFmpeg runs. Create a second list, such as evening.txt, for the other sequence. The concat demuxer reads files and directives from a text file in sequence; consult the manual for its supported directives and options.

4. Run the chosen list through FFmpeg
A typical starting point for compatible inputs is:
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i morning.txt -c copy -f flv "YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"Replace the example list and destination with your actual values. This illustrates the concat-demuxer approach; it is not a universal command for every source file or YouTube ingest configuration. Confirm the output container and codecs are appropriate for your media and chosen ingest method, and test the exact command before a scheduled broadcast. Do not publish or share your stream key.
When files do not match, normalize them
If inputs have different codecs, stream layouts, time bases, or other incompatible properties, do not assume that -c copy will make them consistent. A filter-and-re-encode workflow can convert segments to a common output format before concatenation. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed; see the FFmpeg FAQ.

Choose this route when consistent output matters more than avoiding re-encoding. Decide on common video and audio properties, test the whole sequence for transitions and timing, and verify that the resulting stream reaches YouTube correctly. The official references describe the concat options, but do not establish a universal set of encoding settings for every collection of files.
Use an external scheduler to select the playlist
FFmpeg’s concat list determines media order; it does not, by itself, choose a playlist at a future clock time. Have a scheduler or wrapper launch the command that points to the intended list at the desired time. The exact scheduler, process-control method, and restart behavior are implementation choices, so test them in your own environment.

A straightforward design is to let one scheduled job start a command with morning.txt and another start a command with evening.txt. If the first run is still active when the next is due, decide in advance how the wrapper will stop or replace it. The official FFmpeg and YouTube references cited here do not establish a seamless, clock-triggered playlist replacement technique; do not count on switching a running process without testing that specific implementation.
Schedule and verify the YouTube broadcast separately
- Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio. YouTube says scheduling promotes an upcoming stream and lets viewers receive reminders. Studio’s event schedule does not select or edit the FFmpeg concat list. Follow YouTube’s encoder-stream setup instructions for the current Studio flow.
- Copy the YouTube stream URL and key into your encoder configuration. The encoder sends media to that configured destination. Treat the key as a credential.
- Start the FFmpeg process early enough to check its output. Confirm that the intended playlist is playing and that YouTube receives the encoder feed.
- Check Live Control Room before the event. Use its preview and controls to confirm the incoming feed and go live as appropriate for the event. Scheduling the broadcast and starting the encoder are separate actions.
If you choose HLS ingestion
These are YouTube’s HLS-specific requirements, not general rules for FFmpeg concatenation: segments must be 1–4 seconds, use TS format, and be sent using HTTPS POST/PUT with a rolling playlist containing no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. Check the current YouTube HLS setup guidance before configuring an HLS output.

Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg rejects the concat input or playback fails at a file boundary: Compare the input streams, codecs, and time bases. Use the concat filter with re-encoding if the sources need normalization.
- There is a pause, gap, or artifact between files: Check whether stream durations differ or stored durations are inaccurate; the concat demuxer uses timestamps across the sequence, so such differences can affect transitions.
- The wrong playlist starts: Verify the scheduler’s selected list, command arguments, file paths, and working directory. Test each scheduled command independently.
- The next sequence does not begin at the scheduled time: Check whether the previous FFmpeg process is still running and what the wrapper does when a scheduled start occurs. Test the intended stop-and-start behavior rather than assuming live replacement is seamless.
- YouTube does not show an incoming feed: Check the configured stream URL and key, FFmpeg’s output errors, and the selected ingest method. Confirm the encoder preview in Live Control Room before the event.
- HLS output is delayed or rejected: Verify the HLS-specific segment, format, playlist, and HTTPS requirements above. Those constraints do not apply to RTMP just because both methods send a YouTube live feed.
