How to Schedule Different Videos in a 24/7 YouTube Playlist on DigitalOcean

A YouTube playlist does not create a continuous live broadcast. Learn how a DigitalOcean Droplet and encoder can sequence prerecorded videos into a YouTube Live feed, and what to plan for bandwidth, testing, and recovery.

You can run a continuous YouTube broadcast from a DigitalOcean Droplet, but a YouTube playlist alone will not do it. Create or schedule a YouTube Live stream, then use an encoder on the Droplet to send a continuous feed made from your video files. The encoder needs the Live stream’s URL and stream key. This guide covers the setup, file sequencing, bandwidth costs, testing, and recovery considerations; no particular Droplet size or always-on uptime is guaranteed.

What “24/7 YouTube playlist” means

A YouTube playlist is a list of uploaded videos for on-demand viewing. A continuous prerecorded-video broadcast is different: YouTube Live receives an encoder feed, and that feed supplies the videos in sequence. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a format for streaming. YouTube’s encoder guide also lists Gyre as a cloud tool for continuous prerecorded-video streaming; that listing does not establish an endorsement or partnership.

For a self-managed setup, the pieces are a DigitalOcean Droplet, media-sequencing and encoding software such as FFmpeg, the video files, and a YouTube Live event. The Droplet runs the encoder and sends the feed to YouTube. DigitalOcean provides configurable CPU, memory, disk, and networking resources; it does not supply a preconfigured 24/7 playlist encoder. Option What you manage What is established
StreamNeo Upload videos, add the YouTube stream key, and start the stream. Runs the uploaded-video stream in the cloud, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops it; supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free with no card. StreamNeo
DigitalOcean Droplet plus encoder Droplet setup, software installation and configuration, file sequencing, outbound bandwidth, monitoring, and recovery. Offers configurable server resources. Capacity, reliability, and total cost for this workload depend on the configuration and implementation.
Other managed cloud tool Depends on the service and its terms. YouTube’s encoder documentation lists Gyre for continuous prerecorded-video streaming, but does not establish its current prices or comparative performance.

For a self-hosted build, you get control over the server and encoding workflow, but you are responsible for keeping the process and source files available and budgeting outbound transfer. A managed service reduces server administration; check its current features and terms before choosing it.

Create or schedule the YouTube Live stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one for later. Scheduling can make the upcoming event visible to subscribers and let them set reminders. If you have never streamed live before, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  2. Choose the encoder connection details. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the event. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it: RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. You can reveal the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room. YouTube RTMPS guidance
  3. Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password. Enter it only in the encoder’s protected configuration; do not put it in a public command, screenshot, repository, or shared log. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
  4. Leave the event ready for an encoder feed. The Droplet’s encoder will send the video; the YouTube event is the destination, not the playlist engine.

Prepare and sequence your video files

Decide the order in which the files should play, then configure the media software to produce a continuous, real-time output. FFmpeg documents both a concat demuxer and a concat filter. The demuxer can avoid re-encoding in suitable cases, but files must meet its compatibility requirements. Mixed codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio layouts, or container details can cause joins to fail or look and sound inconsistent. FFmpeg concat FAQ

  1. Inventory the files. Record their intended order, duration, resolution, frame rate, video and audio codecs, and whether each has audio.
  2. Choose a sequencing method. Use the concat demuxer only when the files are compatible with its requirements. Use the concat filter or normalize inputs through an encoding workflow when they are not.
  3. Check transitions and continuity. Test joins between the actual files, including audio at boundaries. Do not assume that arbitrary files will concatenate seamlessly.
  4. Configure continuous real-time output. The encoder must send a live feed at the intended bitrate and maintain the output rather than simply play files locally. The FFmpeg FAQ explains concat functionality, not a complete, verified, indefinitely looping YouTube command.
  5. Test the exact sequence before relying on it. Confirm video, audio, order, and behavior when the last item ends. Make sure the files remain available to the encoder after restarts.

Set encoder output to YouTube’s guidance

Match the encoder configuration to YouTube’s current recommendations and to the capabilities of your files and server. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance calls for constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It also documents supported codecs and RTMP/RTMPS connection options. • Protocol: RTMPS where supported; use the matching URL provided in Live Control Room.
  • Bitrate: Use a constant bitrate within YouTube’s recommended range for the chosen resolution and frame rate. The required network capacity must accommodate the selected output continuously.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Codec and resolution: Select from YouTube-supported options and ensure the Droplet can sustain the encoding workload if the files need transcoding.

Exact bitrate and resolution values depend on the output format and YouTube’s current guidance. Verify the settings page for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send rather than applying one bitrate to every video set.

Choose Droplet capacity and estimate bandwidth cost

There is no documented Droplet size that guarantees this workload. The required CPU and memory depend on whether files can be passed through or must be transcoded, as well as the selected resolution, codec, and frame rate. Disk capacity must accommodate the files and operating system; network capacity must sustain the outgoing stream.

DigitalOcean documents maximum network throughput of 2 Gbps for standard non-GPU Droplets and 10 Gbps for Premium CPU Droplets. Those are service limits, not recommended configurations or proof that a particular Droplet can run a given encoder workload. DigitalOcean Droplet limits (last verified 19 August 2026)

Outbound transfer can be a significant recurring cost for a continuous stream. DigitalOcean says plan transfer allowances are pooled at the team level; additional outbound transfer is $0.01 per GiB, while inbound transfer is free. Check the current allowance remaining for your team and the current billing terms before deployment. DigitalOcean bandwidth billing (last verified 14 September 2026)

Estimate transfer from the encoder’s sustained output bitrate and monthly runtime, then compare it with the team’s remaining pooled allowance. For a rough decimal calculation, bitrate in megabits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8 gives megabytes sent; convert to GiB using the billing unit and account for protocol overhead and variability. A 24/7 service runs about 720 hours in a 30-day month, but the actual stream bitrate and plan allowance determine whether additional transfer is billed. Do not budget from the Droplet’s peak network ceiling.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended

  1. Prepare the encoder ahead of the scheduled start. Verify the files, sequence, RTMPS URL, key, output settings, and network connection.
  2. Start the encoder and inspect Live Control Room preview. Confirm that YouTube receives the picture and sound before the event is considered ready.
  3. Check available outbound bandwidth. YouTube advises ensuring sufficient bandwidth for the selected stream settings and monitoring the audio and video quality. YouTube live streaming tips
  4. Observe file boundaries and the end of the sequence. Confirm the transition behavior and that the configured workflow proceeds as intended after the last video.
  5. Plan for unattended operation. Decide how the encoder restarts after a process or server interruption, how you will receive alerts, and how you will recover the stream if YouTube disconnects it. These are implementation responsibilities, not guarantees from YouTube or DigitalOcean.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube receives no video Incorrect stream URL or key, wrong protocol, encoder not running, or outbound connection blocked. Compare the encoder destination with Live Control Room, confirm RTMPS support and the selected URL, and inspect the encoder process and network access.
Live Control Room shows an unstable or poor-quality feed Insufficient sustained outbound capacity, bitrate mismatch, or overloaded encoding resources. Check the actual output bitrate, available bandwidth, Droplet CPU load, and YouTube’s preview and stream health indicators.
Video or audio breaks at a join Input files have incompatible parameters or the chosen concat method cannot join them cleanly. Inspect codecs, frame rates, dimensions, and audio tracks; test the actual boundary and normalize incompatible inputs.
The sequence stops after one pass The encoder workflow plays the list once rather than repeating it, or fails when reaching the final file. Verify the sequencing configuration at the end of the list and test a complete cycle; the FFmpeg concat FAQ is not a complete looping recipe.
The stream does not resume after an interruption The encoder process or server did not restart, the connection changed, or YouTube requires the feed to be reconnected. Inspect process and server logs, confirm the key and destination remain valid, and follow the recovery procedure you established. Do not assume automatic recovery is built into a Droplet.
Unexpected DigitalOcean bandwidth charge Outbound usage exceeded the remaining team-level pooled allowance. Review team transfer usage, the selected plan allowances, and the actual sustained bitrate; check current billing terms.

YouTube policy and rights for prerecorded streams

Using prerecorded footage does not remove your responsibility to follow YouTube’s copyright rules and other platform policies. Only stream video and audio you own or are authorized to broadcast, including music, gameplay footage, and any embedded material. A live broadcast may be interrupted or restricted if it includes content that violates applicable rules. Review YouTube’s current live streaming requirements and copyright guidance before scheduling, especially if the channel is new or the material includes third-party content.
