Scheduling creates the event and its watch page; it does not play the program or keep the channel’s feed running.
What scheduling does—and what it does not do
YouTube treats a live broadcast event and the incoming stream feed as separate things. A scheduled event gives viewers a watch page and lets them find the upcoming show and opt into notifications. An encoder or playout system must still generate and send the actual program feed.
For a station that already runs a continuous 24/7 feed, you can keep that feed going and create a separate scheduled broadcast for a distinct program, such as an overnight interview. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation describes this continuous-feed-plus-separate-event pattern.
Before you schedule the show
- Check live-stream eligibility. Make sure the channel can live stream and that live streaming has been enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- Choose the source of the program. Decide whether a local computer, standalone hardware encoder, or cloud playout service will send the feed. The right choice depends on your station’s equipment, budget, and need for unattended operation.
- Prepare the program and rights. Confirm the audio and video are ready, and that you have the rights needed for the specific recordings, compositions, territories, and live and archived uses.
- Plan the event length. If you need a YouTube replay, keep the broadcast under 12 hours and retain a local recording as a backup. A longer stream may not be captured at all.
Schedule an overnight live event in YouTube Studio
- Open the live control room: in YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, then open the Manage tab.
- Create the event: select Schedule stream. Create a new event or reuse settings from a previous stream.
- Set the event details: enter the title, scheduled time, and visibility. Check the time zone and date carefully, especially if the show crosses midnight or your station and audience are in different regions.
- Share the watch page if useful: viewers can visit the upcoming event and opt into notifications.
- Connect the feed: copy the event’s stream URL and stream key into the encoder or playout system that will send the program. Treat the stream key as a credential; do not share it publicly.
- Start and verify the feed: start the encoder, wait for the preview in YouTube Studio, check that the intended event is selected and that audio and video are present, then select Go live unless auto-start is enabled.
- Confirm the handoff: verify the event’s visibility and timing, and make sure the station’s playback schedule matches the show. Monitor the stream overnight or use a setup with monitoring and recovery.
YouTube’s stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop. If you use them, check their state for the scheduled stream rather than assuming the encoder will start or end the public broadcast in the way you expect.

Choose how the overnight feed will run
These are the main ways to keep a YouTube live feed running. YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders, and its encoder directory includes cloud streaming services; the best fit depends on the station’s needs.
- StreamNeo: a cloud option for uploaded-video playback that can keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer running; any quality up to 4K 60fps streams at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free.
- Local computer with encoder or playout software: useful if the station already has a computer it can leave running. Consider power and internet continuity, unattended playback, automatic restart, monitoring, and audio/video setup.
- Standalone hardware encoder: a dedicated physical option. Compare supported inputs and outputs, unattended operation, stream-key workflow, monitoring, and budget. A hardware encoder is not required if software or a cloud option better suits the station.
- Another cloud playout or streaming service: potentially useful for remote, unattended playback or scheduled prerecorded programming. Check playlist and schedule support, recovery and monitoring, storage, and current service terms before choosing one.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams what you upload at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.

Plan replays and viewer controls
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If the station needs a replay, divide programming into shorter broadcasts and keep a local recording as a backup rather than relying on one archive of a continuous 24/7 stream.

Having a licence does not always prevent an interruption: YouTube says a rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Check that the rights cover the particular tracks and recordings, relevant territories, and both live and archived use. The legal requirements depend on the station and jurisdiction; confirm them with the relevant rights holders or a qualified adviser.

Troubleshoot common overnight scheduling problems
- The scheduled page exists, but nothing is playing: scheduling created the broadcast, not the feed. Start the encoder or playout system and connect it to the event with that event’s stream URL and key.
- The encoder is sending video, but the event has not gone live: wait for the preview, verify that the correct scheduled event is selected, and click Go live unless auto-start is enabled.
- The show starts at the wrong time: recheck the event date, time, and time zone in YouTube Studio, then compare them with the playout schedule.
- The wrong program appears: check the playlist or playback schedule on the system generating the feed, as well as the event connected to the encoder.
- The stream is interrupted after music plays: review YouTube’s copyright notices and confirm the station has the necessary rights. If licensed material is being matched, ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting.
- There is no archive or complete replay: a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter broadcasts when an archive is needed and keep a local recording.
- The overnight feed stops while unattended: check the source system’s power, internet connection, playback automation, and monitoring or restart setup. Do not assume that a scheduled YouTube event will restart a failed encoder.
