For one file, OBS’s built-in Media Source is simpler and can loop that file. Neither source setting guarantees an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast.
Which OBS source should you use?

These features are described in the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022. It lists Media Source video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Check the documentation if you need to confirm a particular file format.
Set up a playlist of local files in OBS
1. Install compatible VLC
Install VLC before adding a VLC Video source. Match the architecture: use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. OBS’s documentation identifies VLC as a requirement for this source.
2. Add the VLC Video source
- In OBS, select the scene that should show the music stream.
- In the Sources dock, select + and choose VLC Video.
- Create a new source or select an existing one, then open its properties.
- Add the local media files to the playlist and arrange them in the desired order.
OBS documents the playlist and source controls, but exact interface wording can vary by OBS version. The documented workflow is for media items in the VLC source; it does not establish a workflow for using a YouTube playlist URL as the source.

3. Choose loop and shuffle behavior
- Keep Loop Playlist on to restart playback after the final item.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence; turn it on to randomize files.
OBS lists loop as on and shuffle as off by default. Confirm the settings in the source properties rather than assuming they have not been changed.
4. Decide what happens when the source is hidden
OBS documents a visibility setting that can stop and restart playback, pause and resume it, or keep playback running while the source is hidden. Its stated default is to stop while hidden and restart when visible. If the source is in a scene that becomes inactive, choose the behavior deliberately: a source that stops when hidden may restart rather than continue from the same point when shown again.

When Media Source is the better fit
For a stream built around one local recording, add an OBS Media Source and enable its loop setting if you want the file to repeat. This avoids the separate VLC installation required by VLC Video. OBS’s documentation lists the supported formats above; if your file is not among them, check current OBS compatibility before planning the broadcast around it.
What “24/7” does—and does not—mean in OBS
A looping source controls media playback, not end-to-end service availability. The OBS source documentation does not promise continuous uptime or certify that a computer, power supply, internet connection, encoder, or YouTube will remain available. A playlist can repeat correctly while the broadcast itself is interrupted by a failure elsewhere in the chain.

For a network SRT input rather than local music files, OBS documents SRT setup for both Media Source and VLC Video, with different steps and limitations in its SRT Protocol Streaming Guide, dated January 14, 2022. That is a separate input scenario, not a way to turn a local playlist into a YouTube-hosted playlist.
Check music rights before going live
Having an audio file, buying a track, or obtaining permission does not by itself guarantee that YouTube’s live-stream checks will allow the broadcast to continue. YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” It says a placeholder image may replace a stream after content is identified, and the stream may be interrupted or terminated if the content remains.

If you have a license for third-party content, YouTube advises asking the rights holder to add your channel to the Content ID allowlist. YouTube warns that a stream may still be interrupted without allowlisting, even if you have a license. Confirm that your rights cover live broadcasting of the exact recordings on your channel and in the relevant territory; the YouTube guidance does not determine which Indian copyright or licensing rules apply to a specific recording or rights holder. - VLC Video is unavailable or will not load: check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS—64-bit with 64-bit.
- The playlist stops after the last file: inspect the VLC source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Files play in an unexpected order: arrange the playlist items and confirm whether Shuffle Playlist is enabled.
- Playback stops when changing scenes: check the source’s hidden-visibility behavior. OBS documents stopping, pausing, or continuing while hidden; its default is stop and restart when visible.
- The broadcast is interrupted despite playback looping: source loop settings do not guarantee the rest of the broadcast chain or YouTube stays available. If copyrighted content is involved, review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and ask the rights holder about channel allowlisting.
