How to Schedule Recurring YouTube Live Playlist Changes with Make

A recurring Make scenario can maintain YouTube playlist items, but playlist edits and YouTube Live broadcast scheduling are separate workflows.

You can use a recurring Make scenario to add a video to a YouTube playlist or, with an authorized YouTube API call, move an existing playlist item. This schedules playlist maintenance; it does not by itself schedule a YouTube Live broadcast or change the video currently playing in an active stream. First decide whether you want to add a video, reorder a playlist item, or schedule a live event—these are separate operations.

Choose the change you want to schedule

Your goal Operation What it affects
Add a video Make’s YouTube action “Add a Video to the Playlist,” or YouTube Data API playlistItems.insert Adds a video as an item in a playlist
Move an existing video YouTube Data API playlistItems.update Changes an item’s position in a manually ordered playlist
Schedule a live event YouTube Live Streaming API broadcast management Creates or manages a broadcast event, distinct from the stream carrying audio and video

A playlist operation changes playlist contents or order. The cited Make and YouTube documentation does not establish that a scheduled Make scenario changes the media being transmitted during an active live stream.

Set a recurring schedule in Make

  1. Create a scenario. In Make, start a scenario for the playlist operation you intend to perform. Make’s YouTube integration lists “Add a Video to the Playlist” and “Make an API Call,” as well as playlist creation and deletion actions. The integration is listed as supported and maintained by Make. Available fields and authorization options can vary with the current builder, so confirm them there rather than assuming a particular layout.
  2. Choose when it runs. Make documents schedules for regular intervals, once, daily, weekdays, weekly, monthly, specified dates, and on demand. The default scenario schedule is every 15 minutes; the minimum interval available depends on your plan. Choose a calendar schedule for a particular recurring time or an interval when the timing is relative.
  3. Connect YouTube and authorize writes. YouTube API write requests require authorization. Use the YouTube connection and permissions presented in Make, and confirm the connected account can access the target playlist.
  4. Configure the playlist action. For adding a video, use the listed playlist action if its fields suit the job. If you need an API operation that is not exposed as a dedicated action, Make lists “Make an API Call.” Map the correct playlist and video identifiers; do not substitute a playlist ID for a playlist-item ID.
  5. Test before activating. Run the scenario against the intended playlist, inspect the execution result and Make’s run history, and confirm the playlist changed as expected. Verify the schedule and connection before turning on recurring runs.

Add a video to a playlist through the YouTube API

The YouTube Data API method playlistItems.insert creates a playlist item. Google documents that the request needs an authorized call and the snippet.playlistId and snippet.resourceId fields. In practice, configure Make’s API call to submit the target playlist ID and the video resource ID for the video you want added, using the authorized YouTube connection.

Google for Developers documents a quota cost of 50 units per playlistItems.insert call. If a recurring scenario inserts an item every time it runs, each successful insert consumes that method’s documented quota; choose a schedule that reflects the actual update cadence you need.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Reorder an existing playlist item

For a position change, use playlistItems.update, not the insert operation. You need the existing playlist item ID, its playlist ID, and its resource ID. A requested position edit requires the playlist to use manual ordering.

Google for Developers documents a quota cost of 50 units per playlistItems.update call. Take care when constructing the update: values omitted from the specified part can be removed if they are mutable. Send the intended fields for the update rather than treating it as a simple position-only patch without checking the request body requirements.

Playlist changes are not the same as scheduling YouTube Live

YouTube represents a live broadcast and the audio-video stream as different resources. Google describes the distinction this way: “Using the API, you can schedule events (broadcasts) and associate them with video streams, which represent the actual broadcast content.” A broadcast is the event; a stream is the feed associated with it.

The Live Streaming API supports scheduling broadcasts and managing their states. Its recurring-events example uses multiple broadcast resources, which can share a stream when only one event is live at a time. That is separate from adding or moving playlist items through the YouTube Data API. A recurring Make schedule alone is not evidence that the active stream’s playout will change at that time.

Check these details before relying on the schedule

  • Correct identifiers: keep the playlist ID, video resource ID, and—when updating—playlist item ID distinct.
  • Ordering mode: confirm the playlist is manually ordered before trying to assign a specific position.
  • Authorization: confirm the connected Google account and granted authorization permit the requested write.
  • Schedule limits: confirm your Make plan supports the interval you selected; minimum intervals depend on plan.
  • Quota: account for the documented 50-unit cost per insert or update call and your available API quota.
  • Update payload: for an update, include the intended mutable fields so an omitted value is not unintentionally removed.
  • Effect on the live feed: validate the playlist operation separately from broadcast scheduling or live-stream playout. Do not assume a playlist edit changes an already-running broadcast.

Troubleshoot common failures

The scenario runs, but no video appears in the playlist

Check the execution history for an API or module error, verify the playlist and video IDs, and confirm the connected account has write access. Reauthorize the connection if its authorization is missing or no longer valid.

The scenario runs too often or at the wrong time

Review the scenario’s schedule in Make and distinguish an interval from a calendar schedule. Confirm the plan’s minimum interval and check the configured time or dates before leaving the scenario active.

An update changes more than the position

Review the playlistItems.update request’s specified part and fields. Google notes that mutable values omitted from the specified part can be removed; send the intended values and test the update on the correct item.

The playlist changes, but the live video does not

That result is consistent with the distinction between playlist items and live stream resources. The playlist action does not establish control over the content being transmitted. Use the Live Streaming API’s broadcast and stream workflow for event scheduling, and verify separately how the live feed is supplied.
