Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo schedule songs and show viewers the current song and artist, set up two connected systems: a playlist or player that controls what plays and when, and an on-screen label that reads the active track’s metadata and displays it in the video. YouTube’s scheduled live-event title identifies the broadcast; it is not a per-song “now playing” label.
Separate the broadcast schedule from the music schedule
YouTube treats the viewer-facing live event and the incoming audio-video feed as distinct resources: a liveBroadcast represents the event, while a liveStream represents the feed sent to YouTube. The API can schedule a broadcast with a title, start time, and privacy status; the documented example also allows a category. It does not schedule individual songs, so song order and timing must be handled by your playback system. Google’s Live Streaming API reference and its API overview explain the resource model.
Set up scheduled songs and a live “now playing” label
-
Create or schedule the YouTube event
In YouTube’s API model, create a
liveBroadcastwith the broadcast title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. Set a category if you need one. Connect it to the incoming live feed represented by aliveStream. The broadcast title is for the event, not a label that changes with each track. See Google’s broadcasts-and-streams implementation guide. -
Configure the playlist or player
Choose a playback system that can run your intended playlist and schedule, including its order and transitions. YouTube’s live-event scheduling does not perform this job. Confirm that the player itself advances through the right tracks at the intended times; a label cannot correct a playlist that is playing the wrong item.

Read the metadata from the active player
Use the title and artist information associated with the player that is actually producing the audio. This keeps the displayed track tied to playback rather than to a separately timed list that can drift after a skip, delay, or restart.
One community-listed example is the VLC Now Playing Monitor – Metadata Display for OBS. Its listing describes reading ID3 tags—including title, artist, and album—from supported audio formats, allowing custom formatting, and optionally exporting the current song to a text file. It is a third-party community example, not a guarantee of compatibility with every VLC, OBS, file format, or setup. Check its current availability and compatibility before relying on it.

Put the track label in the outgoing video
Add a text or graphic overlay in your encoder and connect it to the current-track metadata. The precise configuration depends on the chosen player and integration. Before going live, verify in the final video output that both title and artist appear, update when tracks change, and remain legible against the background. A text file export can be useful if your chosen overlay can read it, but confirm that the integration updates the file as expected.
-
Test transitions and recovery
Test a normal transition, a manual skip, a player restart, and an encoder restart. Check that the audio and label stay synchronized and that the label does not remain stuck on the previous track. Treat continuous operation and recovery as separate design requirements: the metadata example does not establish that a playlist, encoder, or broadcast will recover automatically from failures.

Keep a recurring broadcast distinct from track scheduling
Google documents a recurring-event pattern in which one reusable liveStream can be bound to multiple scheduled liveBroadcast resources, with only one event live at a time. Its guide describes a 24/7 broadcast continuing as events change. This is an API architecture pattern; it does not certify that a particular playlist or encoder will run continuously or recover from a fault. See Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
Choose a setup by testing the failure points
- Playlist control: Can it schedule the required songs and transitions?
- Metadata accuracy: Does it expose the title and artist for the exact player feeding the stream?
- Update behavior: Does the overlay change correctly on skips, transitions, and restarts?
- Continuity: Can the broadcast and encoder sustain your intended operation, and what happens when one component stops?
The available documentation establishes YouTube’s broadcast and feed model and describes one VLC-to-OBS metadata-display example; it does not compare commercial playlist schedulers or certify 24/7 uptime for a specific setup. An OBS community thread, “How to automatically display song titles in OBS based on a schedule?”, illustrates why scheduling the text independently can be a separate challenge. Use the active player’s metadata where possible, then test the complete signal path.
