EA recommends checking the pool at the start of every season because it changes as a career progresses.
What “free agent” means in FC 27 Career Mode
This guide applies to Manager Career, not Player Career. Manager Career is the mode in which you run a club, control its squad and transfers, manage finances, set tactics and develop players. Player Career follows one footballer and does not use the same club-recruitment workflow.

A free agent is unattached, so there is no transfer fee to pay to another club. That does not make the signing free. You still have to agree a contract with the player, and the negotiation can involve wages, contract length, a sign-on fee, an agent fee and a squad role. EA’s Career Mode guidance specifically recommends checking free agents for “low-cost squad depth” at the beginning of a season, while warning managers to keep wages and bonuses inside the available budget. You should therefore treat the free-agent list as a way to avoid a transfer fee, not as a way to avoid squad-building costs.
When to check the free-agent list
Start with the opening of each season
EA Help’s guide says to check free agents at the start of each season. This is the most useful routine because you can assess the squad before committing money elsewhere and identify unattached players who cover a thin position. Add the check to your seasonal setup rather than waiting until an injury or a failed transfer leaves you short.

The pool is not a permanent opening-day list. As the career advances, players can appear or disappear, so repeat the search during the season when you have a new need or when a negotiation fails. A player who was not visible during your first check may be available later, and a player you saw earlier may no longer be an option.
Use free agents for a defined squad problem
Begin with the role you need: for example, depth in a position where you have only one senior option, cover for a congested schedule or an inexpensive replacement when a contract negotiation elsewhere becomes too expensive. Searching without a squad need produces a longer list and makes it easier to spend budget on a player who will not receive meaningful minutes.
How to find free agents in FC 27
EA’s official FC 27 Career Deep Dive describes a refreshed Transfer Hub split into Scouting and Transfers. Scouting is used for player search, the scouting network and reports; Transfers organizes active negotiations, lists, contracts and clauses. - Enter Manager Career. The free-agent procedure is for the club-management mode. If you are in Player Career, switch modes before looking for club transfer controls.
- Open the Transfer Hub. From the Career Mode hub, choose the area that handles your club’s recruitment activity.
- Choose Scouting. FC 27 separates scouting functions from active transfer negotiations. Scouting is where you search across the football world and review available information.
- Open Search Players. This is the player-search screen identified in the current KeenGamer guide.
- Set Transfer Status to Free Agents. Apply the Free Agents value in the Transfer Status filter. The result should be a list of unattached players rather than players who still belong to another club.
- Refine the list around the vacancy. Use position and role information, available player information and your own squad plan to remove candidates who do not solve the problem you identified.
If the labels do not match this sequence, first verify that you are playing FC 27 Manager Career and that you are in the Scouting side of the Transfer Hub rather than the Transfers side. How to evaluate candidates before approaching them
A free-agent list is only a starting point. Use the same four questions for every candidate so that the absence of a transfer fee does not distract you from fit and affordability.

Start with role and position, not reputation
First decide what the player must do for your team. A reserve goalkeeper, a rotation defender and a regular starter represent different recruitment decisions even if they appear in the same free-agent search. Compare candidates against the role your tactics and schedule require, using the player information available in the scouting screen. Do not assume that an unattached player is automatically suitable for every role simply because the fee is zero.
Read Interest as a difficulty signal
FC 27 introduces an Interest indicator in the transfer process. EA says it provides an early sense of how willing a player is to join and how challenging the deal may be. Treat it as a planning signal: a lower level of interest means you should be prepared for a difficult negotiation or keep another candidate ready. It does not promise acceptance, reveal a guaranteed outcome or replace the need to check the requested contract.
Check the complete contract commitment
Record the terms you can afford before you approach several players. The relevant commitments are:
- Wage: the recurring payment that remains in your budget for the length of the contract.
- Contract length: how long the club is committed to the player’s wages and role.
- Sign-on fee: an upfront amount that can make a supposedly inexpensive signing costly immediately.
- Agent fee: another negotiation cost that must be included in the available budget.
- Squad role: the status you promise, which should match the minutes you can credibly provide.
EA specifically advises monitoring wages and bonuses to avoid budget problems. Although the unattached player has no transfer fee, the wage and any upfront fees still compete with other squad expenses and negotiations.
How the approach and negotiation works
Approach the player after screening
When a candidate fits the position, Interest level and financial plan, select the option to approach the free agent. EA’s FC 27 Career Deep Dive identifies approaching a free agent and assessing player interest as parts of the transfer process. Use the response to decide whether to continue
A positive response allows the negotiation to proceed. A player’s Interest indicator and response should change how much time you invest in the deal, but neither should be read as a signing guarantee. If the response is negative or the demands exceed your plan, return to the Scouting list instead of repeatedly committing budget to a poor fit.

The squad role is part of the negotiation, not a cosmetic label. Before making an offer, look at your existing depth, expected rotation and likely minutes. Offering a role that accurately describes the player’s place gives you a more coherent squad plan; offering a prominent role to a player you intend to use only occasionally can create an avoidable mismatch.
Review every term before confirming
Check the recurring wage, contract length, sign-on fee, agent fee and selected squad role together. A low wage can be offset by a large upfront fee; a short deal can still strain the current budget; and a long deal can tie up wages beyond the season in which you need the depth. Confirm that the total commitment fits the budget after accounting for your other planned moves.
A practical decision framework for choosing among free agents
When several unattached players cover the same vacancy, rank them in this order:
- Squad fit: remove anyone who does not cover the position or role you actually need.
- Credible usage: decide whether you can offer starter, rotation or depth minutes without distorting your existing plan.
- Interest: prioritize candidates whose Interest level suggests a realistic conversation, while keeping alternatives for every uncertain target.
- Total commitment: compare wage, term, sign-on fee and agent fee rather than looking only at the absence of a transfer fee.
- Risk of budget displacement: choose the option that leaves room for the rest of the squad, including bonuses and other negotiations.
This is a comparison method, not a claim that FC 27 uses a published formula to calculate signing success. EA and KeenGamer provide the information categories; the ranking is a way to apply them consistently to your club.

Illustrative choice
Suppose two unattached players can cover the same depth role. Candidate A shows stronger Interest but asks for a wage and fees that would consume the budget needed for another position. Candidate B shows less Interest but fits the role you can offer and leaves room for the rest of the window. The sensible next step is to approach both in order of fit and affordability, not to assume that the higher Interest signal automatically makes Candidate A the better signing.

If Interest is low
Do not treat a low Interest reading as a guaranteed rejection, but do treat it as a warning that the deal may be difficult. Keep the player on your shortlist only if the position is important enough to justify the uncertainty, and identify a second candidate before spending more of the budget.
If the contract is too expensive
Recalculate the full commitment, including wage, length, sign-on fee and agent fee. If the total no longer supports the squad plan, stop the negotiation and return to Search Players. The value of a free agent is lost if the contract prevents you from addressing another essential vacancy.
If the response is negative
Use the Scouting search again rather than assuming the entire free-agent pool is unavailable. The list can change as the career progresses, and another player may provide a better combination of position fit, Interest and cost.
If the player would not receive the promised role
Withdraw or revise the target. A role should describe the minutes you can realistically provide. If your squad plan cannot support the role required in negotiations, the player is not a good fit even when there is no transfer fee.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Checking only once: the pool changes, so repeat the search after the seasonal check when your needs change.
- Confusing Manager Career with Player Career: only Manager Career gives you the club transfer and budget responsibilities described here.
- Assuming “free” means zero cost: wages, contract length, sign-on fees and agent fees still apply.
- Reading Interest as a promise: it indicates willingness and difficulty, not guaranteed agreement.
- Ignoring squad role: the role is a negotiation element and should match the minutes available.
- Using old FC 26 details as if they were FC 27 rules: EA’s FC 26 notes discuss potential in scout reports and increased AI approaches during the final six months of contracts. Those are prior-version details and should not be silently applied to FC 27.
- Spending the whole budget on one unattached player: a free-agent signing can still crowd out wages, bonuses and other necessary moves.
