The fastest method: Xbox Game Bar
Game Bar is the best first attempt when you want an in-game still image rather than a recording or a picture of the whole desktop.
- Launch the game.
- Press Windows + G. If Windows asks whether the app is a game, confirm it.
- Open the Capture widget.
- Select the camera button (the still-image control).
- Wait for the capture notification.
- Choose See my Captures in the widget, then open the image or use Open file location.
Do not select Record from now unless you want video. The camera control creates a still image; the recording controls create a clip. A direct Game Bar screenshot hotkey may be available on your Windows build, but Microsoft’s currently reviewed consumer page documents the camera control rather than guaranteeing a single still-image shortcut, so check Settings → Gaming → Xbox Game Bar and the overlay’s shortcut settings before relying on one.
Where Game Bar saves captures
Many installations use VideosCaptures, but the exact folder can vary with Windows and Game Bar versions. The reliable method is Game Bar → Capture → See my Captures → Open file location; do not confuse this with the separate PicturesScreenshots destination used by the documented Windows + Print Screen workflow.

Keyboard shortcuts and ordinary Print Screen
Save a full-screen desktop screenshot
Press Windows + Print Screen. Microsoft documents the saved destination as PicturesScreenshots: Windows keyboard-shortcut guidance. This captures the display-oriented desktop view, which can include taskbars, notifications, other monitors, or overlays.
Copy a screenshot to the clipboard
Press Print Screen on supported keyboards, then paste into Paint, Discord, Word, an email, or another image-capable application. It may copy an image without creating a file, so check the clipboard before searching folders.
Use a laptop without a Print Screen key
Some keyboards require Fn with the Print Screen key. Microsoft also documents Fn + Windows + Space Bar for some devices; behavior depends on the manufacturer and keyboard firmware.
Print Screen is not the preferred game method because it can copy the entire display, save only after another step, or fail with a game’s presentation mode. Use Game Bar or a game-specific overlay when the target is the active game.

Snipping Tool: best for regions, windows, and borderless games
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Choose Rectangle, Window, Full screen, or Freeform.
- Select the game area or window.
- Use the notification to annotate, crop, copy, share, or open the capture in Snipping Tool.
- Press Ctrl + S to save manually. Current versions can automatically save captures when automatic saving is enabled, so confirm the setting in Snipping Tool.
Snipping Tool is useful for a launcher, error message, windowed game, or a selected region. It can be less dependable for a fast moment in exclusive-fullscreen play if the overlay causes the game to minimize or lose focus. Its still-image shortcut is Windows + Shift + S; Windows + Shift + R opens video capture instead. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool documentation.
Steam games
Steam has its own screenshot system and manager, which can associate images with a Steam game rather than with Windows’ general capture folders. Because Valve can change the client’s shortcut, folder and cloud controls, open the current Steam client’s screenshot settings and the official Saving a Screenshot support page before relying on a particular key or path.
Use Steam’s screenshot manager to view captures and open their folder. Steam screenshots and Game Bar screenshots are separate: an image made by one does not automatically appear in the other’s gallery. Non-Steam games may not receive Steam’s game association or overlay behavior, so Game Bar or the GPU utility is usually the better fallback.
NVIDIA and AMD capture tools
NVIDIA App
On a supported NVIDIA GPU, enable the in-game overlay, then press Alt + F1 for a screenshot. Press Alt + Z to open the overlay and its per-game Gallery. Alt + F2 opens Photo Mode only in compatible games. NVIDIA advertises SDR and HDR screenshot capture: NVIDIA App features.

The overlay settings let you change hotkeys, notifications, capture behavior, and storage. This is an NVIDIA-specific option, not a requirement for Windows 11.
AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition
Radeon owners can use Adrenalin’s capture features. Open the capture or hotkey settings and confirm the screenshot key in the installed version rather than assuming a universal default. AMD documents configurable screenshot hotkeys, save-folder selection, desktop capture, and borderless-region capture; its documentation places the default folder within the user’s Videos folder: AMD Radeon ReLive capture settings. HDR screenshots: why results vary
HDR capture depends on the game, Windows HDR setting, display, GPU driver, capture utility, file format, and viewer. A screenshot can look washed out in an SDR-only viewer, or a tool can save an SDR conversion instead of retaining HDR information. NVIDIA specifically advertises SDR and HDR capture, but no single Windows method should be assumed to preserve HDR appearance perfectly.
- View the result in an HDR-capable application when judging color and brightness.
- Compare a Game Bar, platform, and GPU capture if the result looks wrong.
- Keep the game, Windows, driver, and viewer settings consistent when comparing files.
Troubleshooting missing, black, or incorrect captures

Anti-cheat, DRM or protected video, overlay conflicts, administrator-level mismatches, disabled overlays, and hybrid-laptop GPU routing can all affect capture. Treat them as causes to test rather than universal explanations. Update Windows, the game, and GPU software, and test a simple windowed game to determine whether the problem is game-specific.

Can I screenshot a full-screen game?
Yes. Start with Game Bar or your GPU overlay. If the game blocks overlays, switch to borderless/windowed mode or use its own screenshot feature.
How do I screenshot without leaving the game?
Use Windows + G, then the Capture camera, or use an enabled NVIDIA/AMD overlay hotkey.
Why does Print Screen copy nothing?
It may have copied to the clipboard rather than saved a file. Paste into Paint or another image-capable app, and check whether your keyboard requires Fn.

A controller’s capture/share button can interact with Game Bar or another overlay, but behavior depends on Windows, controller firmware, Game Bar settings, and competing overlays. Check the active overlay’s controller configuration.
What is best for high-quality game screenshots?
Use the game’s own screenshot or Photo Mode when available; otherwise compare Game Bar with your GPU utility, especially for HDR. Judge the file in an HDR-capable viewer rather than assuming every viewer displays it correctly.
