First contain it without destroying evidence, then rotate every credential the attacker could have read, determine the scope, eradicate persistence, rebuild from a trusted image, restore only verified data, and validate the hardened deployment before reconnecting traffic.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Django’s own deployment checks help, but they cannot prove that a host is clean. A safe recovery combines incident response, credential replacement, clean rebuilding, data verification, and a staged return to service.

What to do in the first hour
Work from a trusted workstation and use an out-of-band channel for coordination if the attacker may be monitoring the compromised environment. Keep a written timeline of every command, decision, system owner, and timestamp. That record helps investigators understand what happened and prevents responders from repeating destructive actions.
1. Contain the compromise carefully
Isolate the affected host and any network segments or public-facing services that may be involved. Depending on the architecture, that can mean removing a server from the load balancer, restricting firewall rules, disabling exposed administration paths, or temporarily disconnecting a public service. Do not make broad changes blindly: CISA’s incident-response guidance emphasizes balancing containment with evidence preservation and service availability.

- Limit inbound and outbound traffic to the minimum needed for investigation.
- Separate suspected systems from clean administration networks.
- Stop automated deployments and scheduled jobs that could spread altered code.
- Use a clean device and a communication channel the attacker cannot access.
- Record what was isolated, when, by whom, and what customer or game service was affected.
If a service must remain online, put it behind a controlled maintenance page or a replacement instance rather than leaving the suspected host exposed. Assume that anything running on the host, including application processes and administrator sessions, may be under attacker control.
2. Preserve evidence before cleanup
Do not begin by deleting a web shell, reinstalling a package, or wiping the disk. If investigation, insurance, regulatory reporting, or legal action could matter, preserve evidence first. CISA recommends collecting relevant logs and, when feasible, volatile memory and disk images.
- Copy web-server, reverse-proxy, Django, authentication, database, cloud, SSH, CI/CD, firewall, and endpoint logs.
- Capture a disk or system image before reimaging.
- Capture volatile memory when your response team can do so safely.
- Preserve file metadata, process lists, network connections, scheduled tasks, startup files, and account information.
- Store copies in a protected location and record hashes, collection times, and the person who collected each item.
Keep the original evidence read-only where possible. Copy logs before normal retention rules overwrite the period containing the intrusion. If you lack the capability to collect memory or forensic images, document that limitation and involve an incident-response specialist before destructive work.
3. Rotate access from a trusted environment
Change credentials from a clean administrative system, not from the suspected server. Treat every secret present on the host as exposed, even if you have not yet proven that it was read.
| Credential or access | Required action | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Operating-system administrator passwords | Set new, unique passwords and review privileged accounts. | An attacker with host access may have captured or created administrator access. |
| SSH and other private keys | Revoke or remove old keys and issue replacements. | Copied keys can provide access after the original server is rebuilt. |
Django SECRET_KEY |
Generate a large, unique value and deploy it as a replacement. | Django uses it to sign security-sensitive material; exposure requires immediate rotation. |
| Database credentials | Reset users, passwords, certificates, and connection secrets. | Application credentials may have been read from settings or the process environment. |
| Service-account secrets and API tokens | Revoke old tokens and issue least-privilege replacements. | Tokens can be used outside the compromised host. |
| CI/CD credentials | Rotate deploy keys, runners, registries, and repository tokens. | Persistent access in the build pipeline can re-infect a clean server. |
| Sessions and reset tokens | Invalidate active sessions and outstanding password-reset material. | Stolen signed material may remain usable until it expires or is revoked. |
Rotate in an order that does not strand your response team: establish clean administrative access first, then replace application, database, cloud, deployment, and user credentials. Revoke the old values after confirming the new ones work. Record which systems consumed each secret so no hidden integration continues using a compromised value.

Scope the breach before deciding what to rebuild
Containment tells you where the incident is visible; scoping tells you what the attacker could reach. Review evidence across the entire delivery path, not only Django.
Recommended Free Tools
Review the application and identity trail
- Look for unexpected Django admin users, staff-status changes, permission grants, password resets, and authentication anomalies.
- Compare deployed code and configuration with a known-good version. Pay attention to templates, static files, management commands, middleware, settings, and uploaded media.
- Search for unusual requests, repeated errors, file-upload activity, command execution indicators, and access to administrative endpoints.
- Check database audit records for new accounts, privilege changes, bulk reads, exports, and schema changes.
Review host, network, and delivery systems
- Inspect operating-system accounts, SSH keys, cron or scheduled jobs, startup files, system services, and package-installation history.
- Check firewall, load-balancer, reverse-proxy, cloud-control-plane, and endpoint logs for new rules, tokens, instances, or security-group changes.
- Review CI/CD runs, source-control changes, build artifacts, deployment manifests, and runner activity for unauthorized modifications.
- Inspect outbound connections for destinations, times, and processes that do not match the application’s normal behavior.
CISA recommends collecting perimeter, network, endpoint, audit, transaction, and user-activity evidence. Preserve copies before retention windows erase them. Expand the time range far enough to include the earliest suspicious login, deployment, or configuration change, not merely the moment the breach was noticed.
Clean in place or rebuild?
When you cannot establish the integrity of the operating system, application files, credentials, and deployment chain, rebuilding is safer than trusting an in-place cleanup. A visible web shell may be only one persistence mechanism; deleting it does not prove that scheduled jobs, startup files, accounts, keys, or altered dependencies are gone.
| Situation | Safer response |
|---|---|
| Only a narrowly scoped event is proven, host integrity is independently verified, and forensic requirements allow changes. | Contain, preserve evidence, remove artifacts, patch the exploited path, rotate credentials, and perform a documented integrity review. |
| Root or administrator access is suspected; persistence, tampering, or the initial access path is uncertain. | Reimage or rebuild from a trusted golden image or clean installation. |
| Backups may contain altered code or data. | Keep recovery systems segmented, validate backups before use, and restore only known-good content. |
| The build or deployment pipeline may be compromised. | Re-secure source control, CI/CD credentials, runners, and artifacts before deploying a replacement host. |
Rebuilding is not a shortcut around investigation. Preserve the evidence first, identify the exploited path, and keep a record of which image, package set, source revision, and configuration were used for the replacement.
Eradicate persistence and rebuild from a trusted base
Remove the attacker’s foothold
After evidence collection, remove malicious artifacts and close the exploited path. That can include unauthorized accounts, keys, scheduled jobs, startup files, altered services, injected application code, vulnerable packages, and exposed administration interfaces. Reset affected users and service accounts after the clean environment is ready; resetting them on a compromised host can expose the new credentials.

Prepare the replacement image
- Select a trusted golden image or perform a clean operating-system installation. Do not treat the old disk as a trustworthy base.
- Patch the operating system, Django, and every dependency before exposing the application.
- Build the application from a known-good source revision. Verify source, package, and image integrity using the organization’s established hashes or signatures.
- Load secrets through a protected secret store, environment mechanism, or protected file; keep them out of source control and container images.
- Restrict database, cache, administrative, and monitoring services to the hosts and networks that require them.
- Deploy the rebuilt image into an isolated environment for testing.
Restore data defensibly
Use offline, encrypted backups where available, and validate a backup before restoring it. Check its creation time, integrity, provenance, and whether it predates the compromise. Keep recovery systems segmented so an infected backup or restored host cannot immediately reach production. Restore in priority order: essential service data first, then secondary systems after the initial deployment is stable.
Data restoration does not automatically restore trust. Review restored records for unauthorized accounts, permission changes, injected content, and unexpected administrative actions. If the incident involved database access, treat data confidentiality and integrity as separate questions: an unchanged database may still have been copied.
Django security settings to verify before relaunch
Run the deployment checks with the production settings:
python manage.py check --deploy
Django provides this command to automate checks for several deployment security issues. Address every finding rather than treating a clean result as proof that the host is uncompromised.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Disable debugging and protect configuration
Set DEBUG = False. Django states, “You must never enable debug in production.” Debug pages can disclose settings, paths, source fragments, and other information useful to an attacker.

Generate a large, random, unique SECRET_KEY. Django’s guidance says, “The secret key must be a large random value and it must be kept secret.” Keep it out of source control and load it from a protected environment variable or file. Because the key signs security-sensitive values, rotate it immediately if it may have been exposed.
Django documents SECRET_KEY_FALLBACKS for staged key rotation. Use a fallback only for the shortest practical migration window, then remove the old value. OWASP warns that key rotation can invalidate sessions and password-reset tokens, so plan a controlled sign-out and reset-token response.
Constrain hosts, transport, and cookies
- Set
ALLOWED_HOSTSto the precise production hostnames required by the service; do not use a catch-all value. - Force HTTPS at the proxy or web server and confirm that TLS termination and proxy headers are configured correctly.
- Enable
SecurityMiddlewareand configure secure cookie behavior appropriate to the deployment. - Configure HTTP Strict Transport Security only after confirming that every required hostname and subdomain is consistently available over HTTPS.
- Check that redirects, forwarded-protocol headers, and host validation behave correctly from the public edge through the application.
Use a production server and isolate services
Do not run Django’s development server in production. The Django checklist says runserver is not designed for production; use an appropriate WSGI or ASGI server behind the deployment’s web or proxy layer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Restrict database and cache services to application hosts, protect their credentials like SECRET_KEY, and confirm that backups are actually completing. Verify that administrative interfaces are limited to trusted networks or protected access paths.
Patch dependencies and protect authentication
Update Django and all dependencies, review security advisories, and remove packages that are not required. Add rate limiting or lockout controls to authentication endpoints; OWASP identifies tools such as django-ratelimit and django-axes as examples of controls against brute-force attempts. Test these controls so legitimate users can recover without creating an account-enumeration or denial-of-service problem.

Treat uploaded media as untrusted
Uploaded files are attacker-controlled input. Store them where the web server cannot execute uploaded scripts, and ensure media paths are not treated as application code. Review existing uploads during restoration rather than assuming that a file with an ordinary extension is safe.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate the rebuilt deployment in isolation
Use a staged relaunch. Keep the replacement disconnected from production traffic while you verify both the application and the surrounding infrastructure.

- Inspect outbound traffic: compare connections with the application’s expected dependencies and investigate unexplained destinations or processes.
- Review logs and alerts: ensure authentication, administrative actions, errors, process events, database activity, and network signals are collected and retained.
- Exercise recovery: perform a restore test from the validated backup and confirm that operators can rebuild without using the compromised image or credentials.
- Rotate recovery credentials: replace any temporary passwords, tokens, keys, or accounts used during the rebuild.
Only reconnect production traffic after the incident owner accepts the evidence, eradication, recovery, and monitoring criteria. Keep the old system isolated until the investigation and retention requirements are complete; do not return it to service merely because the replacement is working.
Common mistakes that leave a Django breach open
- Deleting the obvious web shell only: persistence may remain in accounts, keys, scheduled jobs, startup files, dependencies, or CI/CD.
- Changing one password: database credentials, API tokens, private keys, sessions, reset tokens, and
SECRET_KEYmay also be exposed. - Cleaning before imaging: destructive actions can erase the evidence needed to identify the entry point and affected data.
- Restoring the newest backup automatically: a recent backup may contain attacker changes. Validate provenance and integrity first.
- Treating
check --deployas a forensic verdict: it checks deployment settings, not whether the host or source tree has been tampered with. - Leaving
DEBUG = Truefor troubleshooting: production debug output can disclose sensitive internals. - Keeping old key fallbacks indefinitely: a fallback extends the lifetime of a compromised signing key.
- Reusing recovery credentials: secrets entered during incident work can end up in shell history, logs, or a monitored host.
- Ignoring uploaded media: executable uploads can turn a file feature into another persistence path.
- Skipping monitoring after the rebuild: a clean image still needs logging and alerting to detect recurrence.
Criteria for declaring the service recovered
A rebuilt Django service is ready for normal traffic when the response owner can show that the suspected systems were contained, evidence was preserved, the entry path was addressed, exposed credentials were revoked, unauthorized persistence was removed, the replacement was built from a trusted base, restored data was validated, deployment checks passed, authentication and authorization behaved correctly, outbound traffic was understood, and monitoring was active. If any of those statements cannot be supported, keep the service isolated and continue the investigation rather than relying on confidence alone.
