This reduces exposure on the VPS, but it cannot guarantee that the key stays hidden after a wrapper passes it to FFmpeg in the destination URL or protocol options.
What the stream key protects
A YouTube stream key is connection credential material: YouTube’s LiveStreams API calls the assigned value streamName and provides it with the ingestion information. Anyone who obtains the key may be able to send a stream to the associated YouTube ingestion setup, so treat it as a secret. YouTube LiveStreams API reference.
Keep the encoder key distinct from OAuth credentials. OAuth 2.0 authorizes YouTube Live Streaming API methods; a script that only sends media to an already configured endpoint does not need an OAuth client secret just to use its stream key. YouTube: Obtaining Authorization Credentials.
Use RTMPS and protect the key at rest
YouTube specifies RTMPS ingestion over port 443 and a server hostname used for SNI authentication. RTMPS encrypts the connection in transit; it does not protect a key stored carelessly on the VPS. Preserve the ingestion hostname when constructing the connection so TLS can authenticate the server. YouTube: Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.

YouTube’s protocol comparison describes RTMP as unencrypted and RTMPS as encrypted. Both suit normal, low, or ultra-low latency workflows. HLS and DASH are encrypted and support additional codecs, but their segmented delivery typically means higher latency; YouTube describes them as better suited to 4K or other high-resolution use. For an ordinary FFmpeg RTMP-family workflow, RTMPS is the direct transport-security improvement. YouTube: Ingestion Protocol Comparison.
Set up a systemd credential for FFmpeg
- Create a dedicated, unprivileged Linux account for the stream service. Run FFmpeg in the foreground as that account under systemd rather than running it from an interactive shell or as root.
- Store the key in a root-managed source file. Restrict ownership and permissions so ordinary users and the stream account cannot casually read the source file. Do not place the literal key in the script, unit file, environment file, shell history, or source-control repository.
- Load the file as a systemd credential. In the service unit, use a directive such as
LoadCredential=stream-key:/path/to/protected/source, replacing the example path with the actual protected file path. systemd makes the credential available to the service throughCREDENTIALS_DIRECTORY. See thesystemd.execmanual. - Read the credential at launch time. Have the wrapper read
$CREDENTIALS_DIRECTORY/stream-keyand construct the FFmpeg output connection only when starting the process. Keep the key out of static configuration and do not print the resulting URL or arguments. - Use the assigned RTMPS ingestion details. Configure FFmpeg with YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion address and the current assigned stream name. The LiveStreams API documents
rtmpsIngestionAddress,streamName, and a backup RTMPS address for dual-ingestion setups. Follow YouTube’s documented connection format and preserve the hostname for SNI. LiveStreams API reference and RTMPS ingestion guide. - Start the service and verify the stream. Confirm that the service runs as the dedicated account and that YouTube receives the new stream. Do not enable shell tracing or debug logging that could reveal the expanded destination.
Know what this setup does not hide
systemd explicitly warns: “Note that environment variables are not suitable for passing secrets (such as passwords, key material, …) to service processes.” Use its credential mechanism instead of an environment variable. systemd.exec manual.

A credential file improves handling at rest and narrows which service can read the source secret, but a wrapper that inserts the key into an FFmpeg URL or protocol option may expose it in FFmpeg’s runtime arguments. A sufficiently privileged user—or potentially another process running as the same account—may be able to inspect those arguments. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes RTMPS URLs and protocol options; it does not document a dedicated stream-key file input or secret file-descriptor interface. - Do not use
set -xor other shell tracing around secret expansion. - Do not log the final RTMPS URL, expanded arguments, or verbose errors that print command arguments.
- Limit access to the service account and to host process-inspection facilities.
- Keep the VPS and service account restricted to the people and processes that need them.
If the key may have leaked
Treat a key copied into a public repository, support log, screenshot, or shared script as exposed. Replace or rotate it in the channel’s current live-stream settings, update the protected credential source file, restart the systemd service, and confirm that YouTube receives the stream using the new key. YouTube documents that stream resources can be updated, but the cited documentation does not establish the current Creator Studio navigation or exact rotation controls.
