You can update FFmpeg on a VPS that sends a continuous YouTube stream, but replacing the software in place is not a guaranteed live handover: the running encoder may need to restart, and YouTube may show an interruption. The safe approach is to identify how FFmpeg was installed, preserve the working build and stream configuration, verify the replacement has the capabilities your command needs, then schedule and test a controlled restart. If the stream cannot tolerate an encoder interruption, use a separate standby encoder and test failover before relying on it.
Can you update FFmpeg without stopping the stream?
Not reliably by simply replacing the FFmpeg executable. An already-running process continues with the executable and libraries it loaded; updating the file on disk does not itself prove that the active encoder has switched to the new build. To use the replacement, you generally need a process transition, which can interrupt the feed YouTube receives.
There is no universal update or restart command for this task. The right procedure depends on your VPS distribution, whether FFmpeg came from its package manager, a third-party package, a source build or a container image, and how the stream process is supervised. This title does not identify those details, so treat commands from a different setup as unsafe to copy blindly.
If uninterrupted viewer playback is a hard requirement, plan a separately running standby encoder and a tested failover arrangement. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover by stopping the primary encoder and checking that the player rolls over to the backup; that is a test to perform in your own Live Control Room setup, not a guarantee that a particular stream will recover seamlessly. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

1. Identify how the live process runs
Before changing anything, find the exact FFmpeg executable and process definition used by the stream—not just the version returned by an interactive shell. A service, container or supervisor may use a different binary or environment than your login session.
- Determine the executable path, version and build configuration used by the live process.
- Identify the installation owner: distribution package manager, third-party package, source install, container image, or another deployment method.
- Find the service, container or supervisor definition, including its restart policy, environment variables, working directory and log destination.
- Record the complete stream invocation: input, video and audio options, filters, output format, protocol and destination. Keep the stream key private.
Use the package and service documentation for your actual distribution and supervisor. Without those details, a single package-manager command or service restart command could update the wrong installation or stop the wrong process.
2. Save a recovery point before changing the build
Make rollback possible before starting the update. Preserve the current executable or the ability to reinstall its exact package version, as appropriate to the installation method. Also retain the full command and service configuration, recent logs, the current stream settings, and a record of YouTube’s stream health before the change.

These are recovery steps to adapt to your system; there is no safe, distribution-neutral backup command for an unspecified VPS.
3. Prepare and verify the replacement
If a package manager owns FFmpeg
Use the same distribution or package channel where possible, and read the package and release notes for that channel. Confirm whether the proposed update changes major versions, dependencies or available codec support. Keep the previous package version available for rollback if your system supports it.
If FFmpeg was built from source
Follow the official FFmpeg installation instructions and recreate the configuration your live command depends on. FFmpeg documents a configure, make and make install workflow; it also notes that non-system dependencies such as libx264 and libvpx are disabled by default unless enabled. A new build that omits a library may lack an encoder or other feature used by the current stream.

Compare capabilities, not just version numbers
Inspect the replacement’s build configuration and available encoders, then confirm it supports every encoder, muxer, protocol, filter and option named by the live command. FFmpeg’s tool documentation describes capability inspection. Do not assume a newer version has the same features as the old build.
Keep the existing encoder settings unless changing them is part of the update. A software upgrade is not the time to casually change codecs, bitrate, frame rate or keyframe cadence as well: changing one variable at a time makes failures easier to diagnose.

4. Schedule a controlled process transition
Plan the upgrade as an encoder restart and possible interruption. Choose a maintenance window, tell anyone relying on the stream, and make sure you can observe the service logs and YouTube’s preview or stream-health status during the transition.

- Prepare the replacement and rollback path before touching the live process.
- Use the normal procedure for your package manager, container or supervisor to deploy the replacement and restart the encoder.
- Watch the process logs and YouTube Live Control Room during reconnection; do not assume the player will preserve a continuous session.
- If the new process fails, restore the known-good build or package and use your usual restart procedure, then confirm YouTube is receiving the feed again.
The exact cutover depends on your VPS layout and YouTube Live Control Room configuration. An in-place file replacement alone does not establish a seamless handover.

Use the working settings already recorded for the stream, then verify that the restarted encoder still sends the intended video and audio. YouTube’s encoder-settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP and RTMPS protocols; H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR bitrate encoding; and a recommended keyframe frequency of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. These are YouTube’s published options, not proof that a particular FFmpeg build supports each codec. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.

| Resolution and frame rate | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1/H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 2 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are codec- and frame-rate-specific recommendations, not interchangeable targets. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions before applying them because the published guidance can change. YouTube also advises testing with audio and video motion similar to the actual stream before going live.
After the restart, verify that YouTube receives the stream and reports healthy audio and video. Check resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe cadence, codecs and protocol against the intended configuration. Keep the previous build available until the stream has been observed healthy for an appropriate period.
Troubleshooting after an FFmpeg update
- The service reports “encoder not found” or an unsupported option. The replacement may not include the encoder or feature used by the command, or the new build may handle an option differently. Compare its build configuration and capabilities with the old build; roll back if needed, then rebuild or install with the required support.
- The process starts but YouTube does not receive a healthy stream. Check the FFmpeg and supervisor logs for output, authentication, protocol or connection errors. Confirm the service is using the expected executable and that the stream key is still supplied securely to the right process.
- Video arrives with the wrong format or quality. Compare the running command and YouTube’s received resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec and keyframe cadence with your saved settings. Restore the known-good options before changing unrelated parameters.
- Audio is missing or unhealthy. Check the input audio stream, selected audio encoder and output mapping in the actual command, then confirm YouTube reports audio after restart.
- The service repeatedly exits or restarts. Review the supervisor and FFmpeg logs for startup errors, missing libraries, invalid options or a wrong binary path. Revert to the prepared prior build if the cause is not quickly clear.
- Upload capacity is insufficient. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom for the stream and any primary or backup traffic. Assess sustained capacity for your VPS provider and actual stream profile; a backup encoder also consumes capacity when active.
- Failover does not work as expected. Treat it as untested until you stop the primary encoder in a planned test and verify that playback rolls over to the backup in your setup, as YouTube’s failover guidance recommends.
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining a VPS encoder and its update path is more work than you want, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud keeps looping the videos, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is for uploaded video, not a live camera feed.
