How to Secure an Ubuntu DigitalOcean Droplet Used for YouTube Streaming

A practical guide to securing SSH, firewall rules, updates, recovery access, and YouTube RTMPS credentials—without opening inbound ports you do not need.

Secure the Droplet according to what it actually does. If it sends video directly to YouTube, it generally needs outbound connectivity—not a public inbound video port. If it receives a feed from another encoder, expose only the relay’s required listening port, and restrict who can reach it where possible. In either case, use key-based SSH with a non-root administrator, layer DigitalOcean Cloud Firewall rules with Ubuntu’s host firewall, keep security updates enabled, and protect the YouTube stream key.

First, identify the streaming topology and recovery route

The title alone does not reveal whether the Droplet is an encoder, a relay, or a server used only for control and automation. That distinction determines whether it needs to accept inbound video connections. YouTube documents RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL and describes an encoder sending a stream to YouTube; that does not mean every streaming Droplet needs an inbound media port. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain the ingest workflow, but do not specify your server’s architecture.

Workflow What the Droplet does Firewall implication
Direct outbound encoder The encoder runs on the Droplet and sends video to YouTube. Do not add a public inbound video port solely for streaming. Allow the outbound connectivity the host and encoder require.
Relay on the Droplet A separate encoder connects to a service listening on the Droplet, which then relays video. Permit only the relay’s actual protocol and listening port, only after it is configured and tested. Restrict source addresses if feasible.
Control or automation host The Droplet manages or schedules work but does not receive video. Allow only the management and application access it actually needs; do not assume it needs an inbound media port.

Before changing SSH or firewall settings, record the Ubuntu release, administrator account, SSH port, and video path. Confirm that a backup exists and that you know how to recover the machine. DigitalOcean describes backups as system-level disk images that can be used to recreate or revert a Droplet; backup schedules may be daily or weekly, with potentially more frequent options. A backup is not a substitute for configuration management or a tested restore procedure. See DigitalOcean’s recommended Droplet setup.

Know the out-of-band recovery route before tightening access. DigitalOcean’s Recovery Console can help when network settings or sshd prevent normal SSH access. DigitalOcean positions it for recovery or recovery-ISO tasks, not routine administration; use SSH or the regular Droplet Console for ordinary management.

How do I secure an Ubuntu Droplet?

Use a named administrator and SSH keys

Use a named, non-root account with sudo for everyday administration. Configure public-key SSH access, protect the private key, and disable password-based root login only after verifying that the intended account can connect and use sudo. DigitalOcean’s setup guidance covers SSH keys and a sudo user; Ubuntu’s OpenSSH guidance recommends Ed25519 for newly generated keys, with RSA 4096 as an alternative. Ubuntu also documents FIDO/U2F hardware authentication as an optional additional SSH factor. See DigitalOcean’s setup guidance and Ubuntu’s OpenSSH server guide.

  1. Keep your current SSH session open while making access changes.
  2. Configure the named administrator’s public key and confirm the account has the required sudo access.
  3. Open a second terminal and verify key-based login and a sudo command, such as sudo -v.
  4. Check the effective SSH configuration before changing root or password authentication. Settings can be in /etc/ssh/sshd_config or included files under /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/; validate changes using the OpenSSH tools available on the installed release.
  5. Only after the second login succeeds, disable password-based root login and retest. Keep the recovery route available.

For long-running administrative work that should survive a disconnected SSH session, Ubuntu recommends a terminal multiplexer such as tmux or screen. This supports continuity; it does not replace authentication controls.

Layer DigitalOcean Cloud Firewall and ufw

DigitalOcean Cloud Firewalls operate at the provider network layer. They are stateful and block traffic unless an allow rule permits it; rules can be applied to individual Droplets or by tag. Ubuntu’s default firewall interface is ufw, which operates on the host and starts disabled. These controls are complementary: a provider rule does not configure ufw, and ufw does not configure the Cloud Firewall. See DigitalOcean Cloud Firewall documentation and Ubuntu’s ufw guide.

  1. In the DigitalOcean control panel, create or review a Cloud Firewall for the Droplet. Start with inbound SSH access and broad outbound access; ordinary services may depend on outbound connectivity.
  2. Where you have stable trusted management addresses and your access requirements permit it, limit inbound SSH sources. Keep IPv4 and IPv6 policy consistent if IPv6 is enabled.
  3. On Ubuntu, inspect current host rules with sudo ufw status verbose. Add and verify the correct SSH allow rule before enabling ufw. Then inspect the resulting policy with sudo ufw status numbered.
  4. Test a new SSH connection before closing the existing session. Document which firewall controls each exposed service.
  5. Add an inbound application rule only when the deployed service is listening, its protocol and port are known, and the required source scope is understood.

There is no universal “YouTube streaming port” to open on the Droplet. With a direct encoder-to-YouTube design, determine the outbound DNS and RTMPS connectivity the actual host and encoder need; do not add public inbound video access without another requirement. With a relay, identify its configured listening protocol and port and keep that port closed until the service is ready to test.

Keep the system patched, but plan disruptive maintenance

Ubuntu documents unattended-upgrades as installed by default on supported modern Ubuntu installations and configured to run daily by default for security updates. Customized images and configuration changes can alter that behavior, so check the installed release and settings rather than assuming defaults. Review /var/log/unattended-upgrades and decide how you will be notified about pending reboots. Ubuntu’s automatic updates guide describes update origins and reboot configuration.

Keep security updates enabled, but treat reboots and service restarts as availability decisions for an active stream. Schedule disruptive maintenance deliberately. DigitalOcean’s recommended setup includes its metrics agent; monitoring CPU, disk, bandwidth, and service health can help distinguish resource exhaustion or an encoder/relay fault from other operational problems.

Ubuntu recommends a supported LTS release for server deployments. Its release-upgrade documentation states: “We recommend running a Long Term Support (LTS) release as it provides 5 years of standard support and security updates, whereas interim releases are only supported for nine months.” These are Ubuntu release-policy durations; they do not guarantee that a particular Droplet is patched unless it is on an eligible release and configured appropriately. How do I use RTMPS with YouTube Live?

YouTube Help says: “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” It explains that RTMPS carries RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection and instructs creators to copy the stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream key for the stream you intend to run.
  2. In the encoder, select its RTMPS server or ingest option and enter the key as instructed by the encoder’s current documentation.
  3. Verify the encoder actually supports RTMPS. If it has no RTMPS preset, consult its current documentation for the server URL and supported protocol; do not assume plain RTMP is encrypted.
  4. Keep the key secret. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, log, support ticket, shell history, or world-readable configuration file. Prefer the encoder’s secret-management mechanism; if a local configuration file is unavoidable, restrict its permissions.
  5. If the key is exposed, rotate it through YouTube and update the encoder with the replacement.

YouTube’s instructions establish where the key comes from and how the encoder uses it; they are not a complete credential-management policy. Apply the same care you would to other credentials that can control a publishing workflow.

Troubleshooting secure access and streaming

  • SSH stops working after a firewall change: the allowed source, address family, SSH port, or host rule may not match your connection. Keep any working session open, use DigitalOcean’s Recovery Console if needed, inspect Cloud Firewall and ufw rules, and restore the verified management path before making further changes.
  • You cannot log in after changing SSH authentication: the key may not be installed for the intended user, the account may lack the expected access, or an included SSH configuration file may override the setting. Recover through the console, inspect the effective configuration and authorized key, then test a fresh session before disabling another access method.
  • The encoder cannot connect to YouTube: confirm that the encoder is configured for RTMPS if that is the intended secure ingest method, that its key is current, and that the Droplet’s outbound network path permits the required DNS and ingest traffic. The exact endpoint and port depend on the encoder and YouTube configuration; do not infer them from an inbound firewall rule.
  • A remote encoder cannot reach a relay: confirm the relay service is running and listening on the configured protocol and port, then check both Cloud Firewall and ufw. Limit the inbound source scope where practical rather than opening a broad range by guesswork.
  • A stream stops during maintenance: review update and reboot settings, unattended-upgrades logs, and service health. Schedule planned restarts outside the streaming window where possible.
  • Video stalls while the host remains reachable: check CPU, disk, bandwidth, and the encoder or relay’s own logs and health. A working SSH connection does not prove that the video pipeline is healthy.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is to keep uploaded video live on YouTube without maintaining an encoder on this Droplet, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no quality tiers.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required; one free day is available per account.

Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and StreamNeo team support. The same product is included regardless of billing length. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
