Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Secure an Ubuntu 24.04 Nginx server in this order: patch the host, protect SSH with UFW before enabling the firewall, obtain and test a certificate, choose a TLS profile that matches your clients, add response headers, roll out HSTS cautiously, limit abusive requests, and validate every change with nginx -t before reloading. The sequence matters: a firewall rule applied too early can lock you out, and an HSTS policy applied too broadly can make a certificate or subdomain mistake difficult to recover from.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What a hardened Nginx installation should achieve
Nginx hardening is the reduction of avoidable attack surface around the web server, TLS, the operating system and administrative access. It does not make an application secure by itself: vulnerable application code, exposed databases, weak credentials and unpatched dependencies remain separate risks. The practical target is a host that receives only the traffic it needs, presents a current certificate and protocol set, discloses as little software information as practical, emits defensive browser headers, records useful evidence and can be patched without an outage.

- Administrative access: SSH remains reachable from your management network, while unsolicited inbound traffic is denied.
- Web access: HTTP is either needed for certificate issuance and redirects or is closed after an alternative validation method is in place; HTTPS is the normal application endpoint.
- TLS: TLS 1.0 and 1.1 are disabled. TLS 1.2 and 1.3 are retained for broad compatibility unless you deliberately select a TLS 1.3-only policy.
- Configuration safety: every edit is syntax-tested before a reload, and a tested rollback copy is available.
- Observability: Nginx and system logs are watched for repeated authentication failures, scanning and configuration errors.
Do the work from a second terminal or an existing console session whenever possible. Keep one already-authenticated SSH session open until the firewall and Nginx checks have passed.
1. Patch Ubuntu and install the base tools
Start with a current package index and security updates. Installing Nginx, UFW and Certbot together makes the later steps reproducible; fail2ban and unattended upgrades address recurring operational work rather than a single configuration change.

Keep a recovery path
Before editing configuration, copy the files you may need to restore:
sudo cp -a /etc/nginx /etc/nginx.backup.$(date +%F-%H%M%S)
sudo cp -a /etc/ufw /etc/ufw.backup.$(date +%F-%H%M%S)
Store a copy outside the server as well. A backup that disappears with the virtual machine cannot help you recover.
2. Configure UFW without locking yourself out
The most dangerous UFW mistake on a remote server is enabling a default-deny firewall before allowing SSH. Add the SSH rule first, verify it, then add web traffic and enable UFW.
Standard SSH port
sudo ufw default deny incoming
sudo ufw default allow outgoing
sudo ufw allow OpenSSH
sudo ufw allow 80/tcp
sudo ufw allow 443/tcp
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status verbose
When UFW asks for confirmation, answer only after checking that the SSH rule is present. The final status should show the deny-by-default policy and explicit allows for SSH, TCP 80 and TCP 443.
Custom SSH port
If sshd listens on a different port, substitute that port before enabling UFW:
sudo ufw allow 2222/tcp
sudo ufw allow 80/tcp
sudo ufw allow 443/tcp
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status verbose
Replace 2222 with your actual port; do not leave both the old and new ports open unless you intentionally need a migration period. Open a new SSH connection on the custom port before closing the original session.

Why port 80 may remain open
HTTP is commonly retained for the ACME HTTP-01 challenge used by Certbot and for an HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect. If you use a different certificate-validation method and do not need redirects, you can remove the port-80 rule later, but test certificate renewal first.
3. Obtain a certificate with Certbot and verify renewal
Certbot is an ACME client that can request a free Let’s Encrypt certificate, install it into an Nginx server block, create an HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect and arrange automatic renewal. Point DNS for every name you will serve to this host before running it, and make sure the names resolve publicly to the machine.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
sudo certbot --nginx -d example.com -d www.example.com
Use your real hostnames instead of the example names. The Nginx plugin edits the matching server block; review the resulting file rather than assuming it selected the intended virtual host. If the site has several server blocks, an incorrect or duplicate server_name can produce a valid certificate on the wrong block.
Confirm the renewal path
sudo certbot renew --dry-run
A successful dry run demonstrates that the installed renewal configuration can complete without waiting for the actual expiration window. Treat failures as operational incidents: check DNS, port 80 reachability, the web-root or proxy rules used by the challenge, and the Certbot log before relying on automatic renewal.
Check the certificate from the outside
Load the HTTPS URL in a browser and inspect the certificate names, validity dates and chain. Test every hostname that will be advertised, including redirects and any API subdomain. Renewal is only useful if each public name continues to serve the renewed certificate.
4. Choose a TLS profile for your clients
Do not copy a TLS policy without deciding which clients must connect. A current public site usually starts with an Intermediate profile; a controlled environment with no legacy clients may choose Modern, which requires TLS 1.3.

| Intermediate | TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 | General public compatibility, including clients that do not support TLS 1.3 | ECDHE AES-GCM and ChaCha20 suites; ssl_prefer_server_ciphers off; session tickets disabled; a DH parameter file may be used. TLS 1.3 suites are selected by OpenSSL. |
| Modern | TLS 1.3 only | Controlled or genuinely current client populations where older clients can be rejected | Can include OCSP stapling and a resolver. Any TLS 1.2-only client will fail to connect. |
The Mozilla SSL Configuration Generator provides Nginx templates for Modern, Intermediate and Old profiles. Generate a profile for the OpenSSL and Nginx versions on the host, then review it rather than pasting blindly. The exact cipher list changes as software support changes.

At minimum, disable obsolete protocol versions in the TLS-enabled server block or the shared SSL configuration:

sudo openssl dhparam -out /etc/ssl/certs/dhparam.pem 2048
ssl_dhparam /etc/ssl/certs/dhparam.pem;
Generating parameters can take time. Do it during setup, not during an outage. A Modern profile may also enable OCSP stapling; that requires a working DNS resolver and an issuer chain that supports stapling. Verify the generated directives against the current Nginx documentation and your installed OpenSSL build before deploying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTest compatibility before enforcement
Use a staging hostname or a canary server when possible. Test the browsers, mobile applications, monitoring agents, webhooks and API clients that matter to you. External scanners such as SSL Labs can reveal protocol, chain, key-exchange and certificate-name problems that a single browser session misses.
5. Reduce version disclosure
Place server_tokens off; in the http block of /etc/nginx/nginx.conf:
http {
server_tokens off;
# existing directives...
}
This removes the Nginx version from generated error pages and from the normal Server response header. It is a small information-disclosure reduction, not access control: scanners can still infer software from behavior, supported features and timing. Do not treat it as a replacement for patching.
6. Add browser security headers safely
Put shared headers in a snippet and include that snippet in every relevant HTTPS server block. Using always makes the headers appear on error responses as well as successful responses.
sudo install -d -m 0755 /etc/nginx/snippets
sudo nano /etc/nginx/snippets/security-headers.conf
add_header X-Content-Type-Options "nosniff" always;
add_header X-Frame-Options "SAMEORIGIN" always;
add_header Referrer-Policy "strict-origin-when-cross-origin" always;
Include it inside each server block that serves content:
server {
server_name example.com www.example.com;
include /etc/nginx/snippets/security-headers.conf;
# certificate and application directives...
}
Choose framing and referrer behavior deliberately
X-Content-Type-Options: nosniffprevents browsers from guessing a content type when the declared type is unsafe or missing.X-Frame-Options: SAMEORIGINallows same-origin framing; useDENYwhen the application must never be framed. If a business workflow relies on trusted cross-origin framing, design a tested Content Security Policy instead.Referrer-Policy: strict-origin-when-cross-originlimits the information sent to another origin while preserving useful same-origin referrers.
Do not add the legacy X-XSS-Protection header. Modern browsers have dropped it, and poorly configured versions can introduce behavior that is less safe than leaving it absent. Content Security Policy is the modern control, but it is application-specific: inventory scripts, styles, frames, workers, images and third-party endpoints, then test a report-only policy before enforcing one.

7. Roll out HSTS in stages
HTTP Strict Transport Security tells a browser to replace future HTTP requests with HTTPS. It is powerful and deliberately hard to undo, so enable it only after HTTPS works for every intended hostname, redirects are correct and renewal has passed a dry run.
Start with a short policy in the HTTPS server block:
add_header Strict-Transport-Security "max-age=300" always;
Five minutes gives you a way to correct a mistake after the browser’s cached policy expires. During this observation period, test normal pages, redirects, API calls, downloads, websocket endpoints and administrative paths from a clean browser profile and from real clients.
After the short policy has proved reliable, increase max-age gradually. Add includeSubDomains only when every subdomain is HTTPS-ready, including forgotten or independently operated names. Add preload only after you understand the preload program’s requirements and have verified that every present and future subdomain can remain HTTPS-only. A long max-age or preload entry can turn a certificate, DNS or migration error into a broad outage.
8. Rate-limit abusive requests and ban repeat offenders
Nginx request limiting slows brute-force and resource-exhaustion attempts before they consume as much application capacity. Define a shared zone in the http block and apply it only to sensitive locations, such as login or password-reset endpoints, rather than throttling every static asset.
http {
limit_req_zone $binary_remote_addr zone=login_limit:10m rate=5r/s;
# ...
}
server {
location = /login {
limit_req zone=login_limit burst=10 nodelay;
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8080;
}
}
The numbers above are a starting example, not a universal safe limit. Measure legitimate login bursts, mobile retry behavior and upstream capacity, then tune the rate and burst. A limit that is too low becomes a denial of service against your own users; a limit that is too high has little protective value.

sudo tail -f /var/log/nginx/error.log

Look for bursts from one address, repeated requests for nonexistent administrative paths, authentication failures and sudden changes in status codes. Correlate Nginx timestamps with application and system logs; an Nginx 502 may be an application crash, a local socket permission problem or a resource limit rather than an Nginx vulnerability.
Keep logs protected from untrusted web users and plan rotation so a busy endpoint cannot fill the filesystem. Alert on disk exhaustion, repeated service restarts and failed certificate renewal. A secure configuration that cannot write logs or renew its certificate will degrade silently.

10. Validate every change before reloading
Use this sequence for every configuration edit:
- Inspect the changed file and confirm that the intended server block, hostname and include path are being used.
- Run the syntax test:
sudo nginx -t. - Proceed only when Nginx reports that the configuration test is successful.
- Reload without dropping existing connections:
sudo systemctl reload nginx. - Check service state and the error log immediately afterward.
- Request both a known-good URL and an intentional error URL, then inspect headers with a client such as
curl -I https://example.com/.
Never skip nginx -t. A reload of invalid syntax fails, but relying on that behavior during a remote change is an avoidable operational risk. If a valid configuration still causes an outage, restore the last known-good copy, run the test again and reload.
External verification checklist
- Use SSL Labs to inspect protocol support, certificate chain, hostname coverage and key exchange.
- Use securityheaders.com to check whether the intended response headers appear on normal and error responses.
- Run
sudo certbot renew --dry-runafter DNS, proxy or firewall changes. - Check
sudo ufw status verboseafter any SSH or network-policy edit. - Test from an IPv4 and IPv6 network if both address families are published.
11. A practical deployment order
For a new Ubuntu 24.04 host, the following order minimizes lockout and rollback risk:
- Apply updates, install Nginx, UFW, Certbot, fail2ban and unattended-upgrades.
- Back up
/etc/nginxand/etc/ufw. - Allow the correct SSH port, then ports 80 and 443; enable UFW and verify its verbose status.
- Create the intended Nginx server block and confirm DNS points to the host.
- Run Certbot with the Nginx plugin, inspect the generated configuration and perform a renewal dry run.
- Select Intermediate or Modern TLS according to the actual client population; disable TLS 1.0 and 1.1.
- Set
server_tokens off;in thehttpblock. - Include the security-header snippet in each HTTPS server block and test application behavior.
- Enable a short HSTS policy only after redirects and renewal work; increase it only after observation.
- Add targeted rate limits, configure fail2ban and establish log monitoring.
- Run
nginx -t, reload, then perform external TLS and header checks.
Common failures and recovery
SSH stopped working after UFW was enabled
Do not repeatedly restart services from a disconnected client. Use the provider’s console or recovery access, allow the actual SSH port, run sudo ufw status verbose, and open a fresh SSH session before changing anything else. The prevention is simple: add and verify the SSH rule first.
Certbot cannot complete the challenge
Confirm that the DNS A and AAAA records reach this server, TCP 80 is allowed, port 80 is not intercepted by another proxy, and the requested hostname exists in the correct Nginx server block. Re-run the dry run after correcting the underlying path; do not merely renew manually and assume automation is fixed.
Clients fail after TLS hardening
Identify the failing client and its maximum supported protocol. A TLS 1.3-only Modern policy rejects TLS 1.2-only software by design. Move to the Intermediate profile when those clients are required, or update and retire the legacy clients before enforcing Modern.
Headers appear on pages but not errors
Check that each add_header line includes always and that the snippet is included in the server block returning the response. Test a deliberate 404 and inspect it with curl -I.
The site breaks after enabling HSTS
HSTS does not repair an HTTP endpoint; it makes browsers refuse to use one. Ensure every affected hostname has a valid certificate and HTTPS listener. If you used includeSubDomains, inspect all subdomains, including unused names that still resolve. This is why a short initial max-age is safer than an immediate long policy.
Quick Recap
Maintenance schedule
- Every patch cycle: apply Ubuntu and Nginx updates, review release notes, run
nginx -t, reload and inspect logs. - Regularly: review UFW rules, fail2ban bans, disk usage and unusual request patterns.
- Before certificate expiry windows: run
certbot renew --dry-runand verify every hostname externally. - After application changes: retest CSP decisions, framing requirements, rate limits and API clients.
- At least annually: reassess the TLS profile and client inventory; protocols and browser support change.
- Until 31 May 2029 and beyond: track Ubuntu 24.04 support status and decide whether Ubuntu Pro or the Legacy add-on is appropriate for your required maintenance horizon.
