To secure your Epic Games account, open Account > Password and security, find Two-Factor Authentication, and select Set up beside a method. Epic recommends an authenticator app as its strongest listed option. Save the backup codes if you use an authenticator, and secure the email account tied to Epic as well.
How to enable 2FA on an Epic Games account
- Sign in to your Epic Games account and open Password and security.
- Under Two-Factor Authentication, select Set up beside the method you want.
- Complete the verification challenge. Depending on the method, you may need to enter a code sent by email or SMS, enter a code from an authenticator app, or approve a number-match prompt in Epic Authenticator.
- Check the account page to confirm the method is active. Epic says it sends a confirmation email after setup.

If more than one method is enabled, use the three-dot menu beside a method and choose Make my primary 2FA method to select the default. Epic’s methods guide explains the available options.
Which Epic Games 2FA method should you choose?
Epic lists four types: Epic Authenticator, third-party authenticator apps, email codes, and SMS codes. Epic says an authenticator app provides the strongest protection; that is Epic’s recommendation, not an independent comparison of the methods.

Choose a method you can reliably access, then prepare a recovery route in case that access is lost. Epic’s current method descriptions are at What two-factor authentication (2FA) methods are available to use with my Epic Games account?
Save backup codes and plan for a lost phone
Epic says it provides backup codes when you first enable 2FA with an authenticator app. Store them somewhere you can reach if your phone is unavailable, but do not share or publish them. Epic’s recovery guide describes them as eight-digit codes.

- At the 2FA prompt, choose Try another way.
- Select email verification or Enter your Two-Factor verification backup codes, depending on what you have available.
- After signing in, manage the method in Password and security; you can change or disable 2FA there.

If you cannot sign in at all
On Epic’s sign-in page, select Trouble signing in?, enter the account email, and follow the recovery prompts. What Epic can restore depends on the account and the information it can verify; the support guidance does not promise a particular result or timeline. Once access is restored, Epic advises resetting the password and enabling 2FA again. See Epic’s account sign-in recovery page and its guidance for accounts that may have been hacked.

SMS availability can vary by country
Epic says some regional phone numbers are unsupported. Its country-specific notice says SMS 2FA would stop being available beginning August 31 for Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mexico, Azerbaijan, Senegal, and the Republic of Niger; the notice excerpt does not state the year. It separately says SMS was disabled in Russia in January 2026. Because these are time-sensitive availability details, check your account’s current 2FA settings and Epic’s SMS changes notice before relying on texts. If SMS is unavailable, Epic advises selecting another method, such as an authenticator app.

- Use a unique Epic password. Epic says a password manager can help generate and store strong, unique passwords.
- Keep an email address you expect to retain, verify it with Epic, and protect that email account with a unique password and 2FA.
- Protect linked accounts—such as Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Facebook, or Google—with unique passwords and 2FA as well.

Epic says 2FA is required to claim some free games on the Epic Games Store, send gifts in Fortnite, and participate in Fortnite competitive events. Requirements can differ by activity; Epic’s wording does not mean every free game requires 2FA. See Epic’s setup guide for its stated uses.
