Secure your Steam account by enabling Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator, protecting your recovery channels, and avoiding sign-in links you cannot verify. If your account is stolen, secure your device and email before changing your Steam password. For an unfamiliar charge, use Steam’s official support flow and never share full card details.
Set up Steam Guard and recovery options
Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator, part of the official Steam Mobile app, adds a second layer to sign-in. Its code changes every 30 seconds and can be used only once. You can also approve a sign-in in the app or scan Steam’s sign-in QR code; check the sign-in details shown before approving. See Steam’s Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator guidance.

- Add a phone number to your Steam account. Steam says it can help reset your password or transfer the authenticator; one phone number may be associated with one Steam account at a time.
- Keep your backup codes somewhere other people cannot access. Steam recommends printing them rather than saving them on a computer or taking a screenshot.
- Never share Steam Guard codes, SMS recovery codes, or authenticator codes. Steam says its Support staff and Valve employees will not ask for your password or mobile authenticator code.
If you change phones
Transfer the authenticator when possible. Steam says a transfer places a two-day trade and Market restriction; removing the authenticator instead causes a 15-day restriction on trading or selling items. These restrictions apply to Steam inventory activity.
Recognize phishing and protect your sign-in
Use a strong, unique password, turn on two-factor authentication, and follow your email provider’s security recommendations. Steam warns that phishing pages can impersonate Steam or gaming sites. Do not enter credentials unless you are sure the site is trusted, and check links carefully—even a message from a friend may come from a compromised account. Steam Support says it does not use the Friends network to contact users and does not request CD keys or credit-card purchase information unless you have contacted Support through its system. Steam Support’s direct warning is: “Steam Support will never ask for your password.” Enter your password only on official Steam websites; Steam gives steampowered.com and steamcommunity.com as examples, not an exhaustive list. If you are unsure about a site, go to Steam Support directly rather than following a message link. See Steam’s guidance for a stolen account.
What to do if your Steam account is stolen
Do not immediately reset Steam’s password from a device that may be compromised. A keylogger or other malicious software could capture the new password, and a hijacker with access to your email may regain the account or interfere with recovery.

- Secure your computer. Scan it for viruses, keyloggers, spyware, and other malicious code.
- Secure the associated email account. Change its password after the device is safe, and follow your email provider’s security guidance.
- Recover Steam access. Once the computer and email are secure, change your Steam password.
Begin at Steam’s lost-account recovery page. If automated recovery does not work, Steam provides a Support contact form; submit as much proof of ownership as you can. Steam says recovery is possible even if you have forgotten the account’s email address, password, and phone number.

First check whether a household member or someone else with access to the payment method made the purchase. If the charge is still unexplained, use Steam’s official unrecognized-charges flow. For a PayPal statement charge, Steam directs users to retrieve the invoice ID from PayPal for Support.

Steam Support will never ask for your full credit-card number, expiration date, or CVV. Do not send those details in a support conversation, message, or comment.
