Yes—PlayStation records playtime, but the screen and definition depend on your console and account. On PS5, an adult profile can show hours and last-played information for individual games in Profile > Games, according to current secondary documentation. On PS4, Sony’s clearly documented playtime readout is a daily total for child accounts, and it measures how long the child is logged in to the console—even when no game is running. A yearly PlayStation Wrap-Up can also show a combined PS4-and-PS5 total for eligible users, but that is an annual recap rather than a permanent lifetime counter.
Which PlayStation playtime feature are you looking for?
“Hours played” can mean three different things in PlayStation’s ecosystem. The quickest way to avoid confusion is to match the feature to the console, account type and time period you need.

How to see hours played on PS5
Open the profile Games tab
On the PS5 home screen, select your profile icon, choose Profile, and open Games. The game list is reported to show the number of hours and the last-played information associated with the profile. This is the practical route for checking an adult account’s per-game history.
- Start at the PS5 home screen.
- Select your profile picture or avatar in the upper-right area.
- Choose Profile.
- Select the Games tab.
- Find a title in the list and read its displayed hours and last-played date, where available.
The menu path above comes from current secondary guidance. Sony’s official documentation reviewed for this subject does not independently spell out that adult-profile route, so treat small interface changes as possible after system updates.

Interpret the PS5 number as an account statistic
The displayed value is useful for a rough history of a profile, but it should not be presented as a laboratory-accurate active-play measurement. The secondary description says hours may be rounded and may not refresh immediately. Sony’s reviewed documents do not define the rounding method, update schedule or whether time spent idle in a game is included. In other words, the number can lag or differ from what you would calculate with a stopwatch.
Different profiles also produce different histories. If a family member played on another account, those sessions will not automatically appear in your profile’s game list. Likewise, a local session while signed out is not evidence that the signed-in profile’s statistic must increase. Playtime totals are tied to account records, not to a universal meter attached to the physical console.
How to check a child’s daily playtime on PS4
Use Family Management
For a child account, the official PS4 route is Settings > Parental Controls/Family Management > Family Management. A parent or family manager can select the child and check the total playtime for that day.

- Open Settings from the PS4 function screen.
- Choose Parental Controls/Family Management.
- Open Family Management and select the child account.
- View the child’s playtime total for the current day.
PlayStation also gives the child several ways to see the same kind of daily information: the login screen, the upper-right area of the home screen, and the Quick Menu item called Play Time for Today. These views are intended for the child-account supervision system rather than for a general adult-profile game-by-game archive.

Does PS4 count time when a game is paused or closed?
For the documented child-account counter, yes, console login time counts even if a game or application is not running. PlayStation’s official Canadian ratings and parental-controls guidance states: “Play time is the amount of time your child is logged in to your PS4™ system, even if games or applications are not running.”
That means the daily total can continue while the child is sitting at the PS4 home screen, has paused a game, or has left an application closed without logging out of the console. It should therefore be read as time logged in, not “minutes actively controlling a character.” The counter resets at midnight according to the time zone configured for the child account, so a session crossing midnight can be split between two daily totals.
This official definition is specific to the PS4 child-account feature. It does not establish how the PS5 adult per-game statistic handles an idle game, nor does it prove that every PlayStation account type uses the same measurement.
Can parents limit playtime on PS5 and PS4?
Yes. PlayStation provides child-account playtime controls on both PS5 and PS4. A family manager can decide whether playtime should be restricted, set a daily duration, define playable hours, and choose what happens when the allowance ends. The available end-of-time action includes a notification or logging the child out.

What you need before changing limits
- The adult account must have the appropriate family-manager or parent/guardian role.
- The child must use a child account connected to that family.
- A time zone must be set for the child account so daily resets and permitted hours are calculated correctly.
- If the child uses both a PS5 and a PS4, the restrictions can apply across both consoles rather than creating a separate allowance on each machine.
These controls answer “How long may this child use PlayStation?” They do not turn an adult account into a fully documented, Sony-certified active-play tracker. A limit being enforced and a history being displayed are separate functions.
What PlayStation Wrap-Up can tell you
PlayStation’s annual Wrap-Up event has included a total number of hours played across PS4 and PS5 games. It is useful when you want a year-level answer instead of a single game’s history, but it is available only during the relevant recap period and under that year’s eligibility rules.
For example, the 2025 announcement required eligible users to have played at least 10 hours between January 1 and December 31, 2025, and to meet the stated adult-age requirement. That threshold was an access condition for the 2025 recap, not a typical-player statistic and not a permanent requirement for every future Wrap-Up. Rules, dates and availability can change from one annual event to the next.

Will PS5 show all of your historical hours after moving from PS4?
Sony’s PS5 quick-start guidance says that existing PS4 users can sign in with their account and that game history, trophies, profile information and friend exchanges transfer. That makes the same account the correct place to look after moving consoles, but the statement does not guarantee that every playtime total will be complete, identical or accurate after migration.
Do not use account transfer as proof that a particular hour count must include every past session. The PS5 profile view, where present, is an account statistic with undocumented details about synchronization and calculation. If an older title shows an unexpected value, first verify that you are viewing the same PlayStation Network account and not a second local user.

The number is delayed
A secondary PS5 guide reports that the per-game value may not update immediately. Close the game, return to the profile later, and check again rather than treating a just-finished session as missing permanently.

Playtime follows the profile used to sign in. Confirm the avatar and account before comparing the number with your own memory or with another person’s console session.

You are comparing unlike measurements
A PS4 child total counts login time, while a PS5 profile entry is described as per-game hours with unspecified rounding and idle behavior. A Wrap-Up total covers a defined calendar year. Those values cannot be added or compared as though they were generated by one identical stopwatch.
The day changed at midnight
For the PS4 child counter, the reset follows the child account’s configured time zone. A late-night session can therefore appear partly on one day and partly on the next.
The game history is incomplete after a console change
Account and profile information generally transfer when an existing PS4 user signs in on PS5, but Sony does not promise that every playtime total survives with perfect completeness. Record the account identity and allow time for synchronization before drawing conclusions from one missing entry.

A practical way to answer the question
- Want hours for individual games on PS5? Open Profile > Games and use the displayed value as an approximate account history.
- Want to know how long a child has used a PS4 today? Use Settings > Parental Controls/Family Management > Family Management; remember that logged-in time counts even without a running game.
- Want to enforce a child’s schedule? Configure family playtime duration and playable hours on the PS5 or PS4 family controls, with the correct role and time zone.
- Want a yearly combined total? Check the current PlayStation Wrap-Up when it is offered and read that year’s eligibility conditions.
The safest overall interpretation is that PlayStation does record useful playtime information, but the precision and scope depend on the feature. PS4 child monitoring has an explicit Sony definition; PS5 per-game history is documented mainly by secondary guidance and has unresolved details; annual Wrap-Up is a time-limited recap.
