You can run your own Perforce P4 Server for a Unity or Unreal project by installing the server service on a host you control, placing the depot on persistent storage, and configuring each editor with the same reachable endpoint, credentials, and mapped workspace. The practical work is less about choosing a particular brand of hardware and more about getting licensing, workspace mappings, backups, and recovery procedures right.

What self-hosting P4 Server means
P4 Server is the current documentation branding for the Perforce server software formerly described in many pages as Helix Core Server. It stores your depots and metadata on a machine that your team operates. That machine can be Windows, UNIX/Linux, or macOS, provided the operating system is supported by the particular P4 Server release you select. Check that release’s notes before installing; support is version-specific rather than a permanent promise for every edition of an operating system.

- Server host: a dedicated physical machine, virtual machine, or cloud instance running the P4 Server service.
- P4ROOT and depot storage: persistent disks containing versioned files and server metadata, covered by a tested backup plan.
- Network endpoint: a stable DNS name or IP address and a P4 port, commonly written as
192.168.0.1:1666. An SSL endpoint uses the documentedssl:form. - Client configuration: a Perforce user and workspace for every developer, with the workspace view and root mapped to the project directory that Unity or Unreal actually opens.
Unity and Unreal both include built-in Perforce integrations. The integrations do not remove the need for a reachable server, valid credentials, or a correctly mapped workspace. A project can appear connected while still pointing at the wrong workspace, which makes files seem missing or changes invisible.

Plan the deployment before installing
Choose the release and operating system
Start with the P4 Server release you intend to run, then read its associated release notes for supported Windows, UNIX/Linux, or macOS versions. The installation guide covers setting up a service for connected clients, but the release notes are the authoritative place to confirm an exact platform combination.
Give the host a stable identity
Reserve a static private IP address or an internal DNS name. Client workspaces, build machines, and automation should not depend on a laptop address that changes after a reboot. Decide whether remote teammates will connect through a VPN, a private network, or a securely exposed endpoint; do not open the P4 port to the public internet without an access-control design.
Estimate storage from the project, not a generic specification
Official guidance does not prescribe one server model, NAS, SSD, CPU, RAM, disk-size, IOPS, or bandwidth target. Size the host using the factors that drive your workload:
- Current depot size and expected growth.
- Large binary assets such as textures, audio, cinematics, source art, and packaged builds.
- Number of concurrent users and the number of simultaneous sync, submit, and get operations.
- Workspace count, build-agent traffic, and CI activity.
- Backup retention, off-site-copy requirements, and the space needed for restore staging.
- Recovery-time and recovery-point objectives if the host fails.
Put P4ROOT and depot data on storage that survives a service restart and is included in a backup plan. A fast disk can reduce contention for binary-heavy projects, but no drive type is universally correct without workload measurements.

Decide how availability will work
A single host is simple but creates a single failure domain. If you deploy a standby or replica intended to take over during failover, that server needs its own license. Backups and a tested restore procedure are still required; a replica is not a substitute for independent recovery copies.
Install and initialize P4 Server
- Verify platform support. Select the release, read its release notes, and confirm the host operating system is supported.
- Prepare persistent storage. Create the P4ROOT location and depot volume, set ownership and permissions for the service account, and confirm that the backup system can read the resulting data.
- Set the firewall policy. Permit the P4 port only from intended office networks, VPN ranges, build agents, or other explicitly approved clients. Keep administration interfaces and operating-system management ports separate and restricted.
- Install the service. Use the platform package or installer. On UNIX-like systems, the installation guide’s daemon pattern is
p4d -r /specify/path/to/P4ROOT -d. On Windows or macOS, use the platform’s service mechanism so the server starts under a controlled account and restarts predictably. - Record the endpoint. Document the host name or IP, port, and whether clients must use an SSL prefix such as
ssl:hostname:1666. Use the exact endpoint consistently in P4V, Unity, Unreal, and automation. - Create administration and protections. Establish the initial administrative account, protections table, normal users, and workspaces. Keep day-to-day developer accounts separate from service or operator identities.
- Test with P4V. Connect from a client machine, authenticate, create or inspect a test workspace, and submit a small test file. Fix DNS, firewall, permissions, or workspace-view errors before opening a production project.
- Configure licensing. Determine whether the installation fits the no-cost limits or needs a license before relying on it for team work. Apply the license and restart as required by the server state.
- Exercise backup and restore. Take a backup, restore it to an isolated location, and verify that the restored service can be started and queried. Repeat after changing retention or storage arrangements.
Users, workspaces, and the no-cost limits
Perforce Software’s 2024.1 administrator documentation describes a no-cost range of up to 5 users and 20 workspaces, with no file-count limit while both thresholds are respected. If either the user limit or the workspace limit is exceeded, a 1,000-file limit is enforced. The same terms allow up to three graph-depot repositories.
These are separate counts: adding a sixth standard user can trigger the restricted limit even if only a few workspaces exist, and creating a twenty-first workspace can do the same even when the team has fewer than five users. Count accounts and workspaces deliberately, including accounts created for contractors or build processes.

Do not classify ordinary developers as operator or service users merely to avoid licensing. Use those restricted roles for their documented purposes and keep their permissions narrow.

When a license is required
The administrator guidance says servers outside the trial limits require a license, as do standby or replica servers intended for failover. For a license request, provide the number of standard users and the host address plus port. A cloud-hosted instance must use its private instance IP address for licensing. An FQDN or MAC address is used only when the documented address-stability conditions apply.
A previously unlicensed installation must be stopped and restarted after a license is added. An already licensed server generally does not need a restart, although p4 admin restart may be used after a license change.

Configure Unreal Engine
Unreal Engine has a built-in source-control extension that integrates with P4. Configure the project from a P4V connection first, then connect the editor to the same workspace.
- Open the project in P4V first. Authenticate with the intended user, select the workspace whose root and view contain the project, and confirm that the project files are visible. This lets P4V establish authentication and workspace recognition before Unreal starts using the integration.
- Open the source-control settings in Unreal. In the editor, open the Revision Control or Source Control interface and choose Perforce.
- Enter the connection details. Supply the server address and port, the
ssl:prefix when required, the Perforce user name, and the workspace name. - Verify the workspace match. The selected workspace must map to the project currently open in Unreal. If the workspace points at another branch or directory, the editor may not recognize changes even though authentication succeeds.
- Choose a checkout workflow. Check out files before editing, or enable Prompt for Checkout on Asset Modification so Unreal asks when an asset is changed.
- Submit from the editor when appropriate. Use the Revision Control menu to submit checked-out files. Asset context menus provide compare, revert, history, and Get Latest operations.
Updating many Unreal assets safely
The editor integration is convenient for a few assets. For a large update, close Unreal and get the latest files through P4V. The official Unreal guidance warns that P4V can become unresponsive when it is fetching while Unreal remains open.

Reorganize Unreal files inside the editor rather than moving them in the operating-system file browser. Editor-managed moves update references and redirectors correctly. After a reorganization, update redirector references before submitting so other workspaces do not retain stale paths.

Common Unreal symptoms
- Files are not recognized: check that the workspace root and view include the project directory opened in Unreal.
- Checkout prompts do not appear: verify that Perforce is the active provider and that the prompt setting is enabled.
- Get Latest appears stuck: close Unreal for a large sync and perform the operation in P4V, then reopen the project.
- Assets show old references after a move: undo an operating-system-level move if possible, perform the move in Unreal, update redirectors, and submit the corrected paths.
Configure Unity
Unity 3D also has a built-in source-control extension that integrates with P4. The labels below describe the standard Unity workflow documented for the integration.
- Open the settings page. In Unity, choose Edit > Project Settings > Version Control.
- Select Perforce. Set Mode to Perforce.
- Enter identity and endpoint details. Provide the Perforce user name, password, workspace name, and server address with its port. Include the SSL form when your server requires it.
- Check optional behavior. Enable Automatic Add if new project files should be added automatically, and enable Overlay Icons if status badges in the Project window are useful to your team.
- Test an asset operation. Right-click an asset and use Check Out, Get Latest, Submit, or Revert. Confirm that the operation changes the file state in P4V as expected.
- Submit a group of changes. Open Window > Asset Management > Version Control, review the changelist, and submit the selected assets together.
Unity workspace checks
The workspace root should point at the Unity project directory, and its view should include the folders the editor needs. If Automatic Add is disabled, new scenes, scripts, settings, and generated project files may remain outside version control until you add them deliberately. Decide with the team which generated folders belong in the depot before enabling automatic behavior.

Back up what the server actually needs
Include P4ROOT, depot archives, and the server metadata required by your chosen backup method. Keep at least one copy on a different failure domain from the live host. Retention should reflect how far back the team may need to recover a deleted or corrupted asset, not just how much space is immediately available.

A backup is unproven until you restore it. Periodically restore to an isolated host, start the service, authenticate with a test account, inspect depot history, and perform a client sync. Record the elapsed recovery time and any manual steps so the procedure is usable during an outage.

- Use strong, unique passwords and restrict administrative protections.
- Separate developer, operator, and service identities.
- Limit firewall access to known networks or a VPN.
- Use SSL when traffic crosses an untrusted network and distribute the correct trust configuration to clients.
- Monitor disk capacity, service availability, failed logins, and backup completion.
- Document the server address, port, P4ROOT location, license state, and recovery contacts.
Plan maintenance windows
Large depot maintenance, storage migrations, operating-system updates, and license changes can affect client availability. Announce a window, stop or drain active operations when required, verify the service after the change, and have a tested rollback or restore path.
Self-hosted versus managed infrastructure
Managed cloud infrastructure can be a legitimate alternative when no team member should operate the host. Perforce’s licensing documentation explicitly covers cloud-hosted P4 and requires the private instance IP in the license request. Whether managed hosting is worthwhile depends on who will own backups, upgrades, monitoring, and incident response.

Troubleshooting checklist
No client can connect
- Confirm the service is running on the host.
- Verify the address and port, including the
ssl:prefix when required. - Test DNS resolution and route reachability from the client network.
- Review host and network firewall rules.
- Check that the server is listening on the expected interface rather than only on localhost.
Authentication works but files are missing
- Confirm the user has protections for the depot path.
- Check the workspace root and view mapping.
- Make sure the workspace belongs to the intended user and branch.
- In Unreal, verify that the mapped project is the one currently open.
- In Unity, verify that the Version Control mode is Perforce and that the workspace name is exact.
Submits fail or files remain read-only
- Check out the files first, or enable Unreal’s checkout prompt.
- Inspect the pending changelist for files opened for edit, add, delete, or move.
- Look for another user holding a conflicting checkout.
- Confirm that the workspace has write permission to its local root and that the depot protections allow the operation.
The free setup suddenly enforces a file limit
Count both standard users and workspaces. Exceeding either five users or twenty workspaces activates the 1,000-file limit under the documented 2024.1 terms. Remove unused workspaces or accounts only when they are genuinely no longer needed; otherwise request the appropriate license.
