Keep the administration interface restricted to trusted addresses rather than publishing it on the open internet.

Openfire is an instant-messaging and chat server that implements the XMPP protocol. A safe deployment is less about launching the daemon than about choosing the correct XMPP domain, protecting the administrator account, matching Java and package formats, and testing encrypted client connections before inviting users.

What you need before installing Openfire
Plan the deployment as a service with a public identity, not as an application that can be addressed only by the VPS hostname. The XMPP domain is the name users and other servers will use when they authenticate or exchange messages.
A supported Linux VPS
Choose a currently supported Linux distribution and keep its security updates enabled. A Linux VPS hosting plan is suitable when you can administer the operating system, open the required firewall ports, attach a DNS name, and restore the server from backups. The authoritative Openfire material does not publish a universal CPU, memory, user-capacity, cost, uptime, or performance figure, so do not select a size from an invented capacity chart. Size the VPS from your expected concurrent connections, message history, file-upload use, plugins, and database workload, then monitor it after a staged rollout.

A public DNS name for the XMPP domain
Choose the domain before running the wizard. It can be a dedicated name such as chat.example.com or a subdomain of your organization, provided the name is resolvable from the networks that will use it. Create the required A and, if applicable, AAAA records for the VPS. If your clients use service discovery, publish the appropriate XMPP SRV records as well. Use the same name when requesting the server certificate; a certificate for the VPS provider’s default hostname does not automatically authenticate your XMPP domain.
Administrative access and backups
- Keep console or SSH access available in case a firewall rule or certificate change prevents web administration.
- Record the VPS distribution, Openfire release, Java release, package source, XMPP domain, database endpoint, and certificate renewal method.
- Decide where encrypted backups will be stored before creating user data. Back up the external database, Openfire configuration, certificates and private keys according to your retention policy.
Match Java and the Openfire package to your system
Openfire installers do not bundle Java, so install a compatible runtime first. The current official installation guidance states that Openfire 4.10 requires Java 17. Openfire 4.8 and later require Java 11 or newer. Check the exact release you downloaded and install the corresponding supported runtime rather than assuming that the newest Java on the VPS is acceptable.
Install Java on a Debian-based VPS
sudo apt update
sudo apt install openjdk-17-jre-headless
java -versionUse the Java 11 package instead when your Openfire release is in the 4.8-or-later line but is not 4.10 and its support matrix calls for Java 11. If several Java versions are installed, select the intended one with the distribution’s alternatives mechanism and confirm the result with java -version.
Install Java on an RPM-based VPS
sudo dnf install java-17-openjdk-headless
java -versionOn systems that use yum, use its equivalent package command. The package name can differ by distribution, but the important check is that the runtime major version satisfies the Openfire release requirements.
Choose an installation format
Use the package format that matches the operating system whenever possible. It gives the service manager and file layout conventions that the distribution expects.

Do not mix a Debian package’s files with an RPM layout or overwrite a package-managed installation with an archive. That creates ambiguous ownership and makes recovery harder.

Install a Debian package
- Copy the Openfire Debian package to the VPS using your approved transfer method.
- Install it with
sudo dpkg -i ./openfire_*.deb. If the package reports missing dependencies, resolve them withsudo apt -f install, then rerun the package installation. - Confirm that the installation resides under
/usr/share/openfireand that a service namedopenfireis available.
Install an RPM package
- Copy the RPM that matches the distribution and architecture to the VPS.
- Install or upgrade it with
sudo rpm -Uvh ./openfire-*.rpm, or use the distribution’s package manager so dependencies are resolved automatically. - Confirm the expected files under
/opt/openfireand inspect the service definition before starting it.
Install an archive
- Extract the tarball below
/opt, for example withsudo tar -xzf openfire-*.tar.gz -C /opt. - Create a dedicated service account and set ownership according to the archive’s instructions; do not run the daemon as an unrestricted login user.
- Add a systemd unit or the equivalent service-manager configuration, including the correct working directory, Java path, restart policy and log locations.
Start Openfire and open the setup wizard
Use the platform service manager to start Openfire and enable it at boot:
sudo systemctl enable --now openfire
sudo systemctl status openfireRead the service log if it fails to start. A Java-version mismatch, an occupied port, incorrect ownership, or an unusable database connection is more useful to diagnose from the log than from repeated restart attempts.
The default administration ports are TCP 9090 for HTTP and TCP 9091 for HTTPS. From a trusted workstation, open http://your-xmpp-domain:9090 or, after HTTPS is configured, https://your-xmpp-domain:9091. Treat 9090 as a setup convenience, not as a public production endpoint.
Complete the setup wizard deliberately
Run the wizard from an administrator network or an SSH tunnel. The sequence below follows the decisions that affect every client.

- Choose the language. Select the language for the administration interface.
- Set the server domain. Enter the exact XMPP domain users will type and that your certificate will cover. A later domain change can affect accounts, roster data, certificates and federation, so do not use a temporary hostname.
- Choose the database. Select embedded storage for a small evaluation or a disposable single-node deployment. For production, prepare an external database when your backup, recovery, reporting or growth requirements justify a separately managed data service.
- Configure the database connection. Create a database and a dedicated account with only the privileges Openfire needs. Record the connection details in your secret-management process, not in a shared shell history. Verify network access from the VPS and test the connection in the wizard.
- Set the administrator account. Use a unique administrator name and a long, unique password. Store recovery information securely and do not reuse a personal password.
- Finish and sign in again. Confirm that the wizard completes without errors, then sign in through the protected administration endpoint and review the server identity before enabling client traffic.
Embedded or external database?

The official installation guidance permits either an external database or embedded storage. Whichever you choose, test a restoration rather than assuming that a copied data directory is a usable backup. Include Openfire’s configuration and certificate material in the recovery plan; a database alone does not recreate the service.
Configure TLS for XMPP and administration
Encrypted authentication and message transport should be the normal client path. Obtain a certificate whose names cover the XMPP domain and any separate hostnames clients use. Keep the private key readable only by the Openfire service account and protect the keystore backup as a secret.

Configure the Openfire keystore
Openfire’s TLS configuration surface includes the domain certificate and keystore settings. Import the certificate chain and private key into the keystore format required by your release, then select that keystore in the administration interface. Ensure the chain includes the issuing intermediates that clients need; a certificate that looks valid in one browser can still fail in an XMPP client when the chain is incomplete.
After importing or renewing a certificate:
- Check that the certificate’s subject alternative names contain the exact XMPP domain and any client-facing aliases.
- Confirm the keystore password and file ownership without placing the password in world-readable scripts.
- Restart Openfire if the release requires a restart to reload the keystore.
- Connect with a test client and verify that certificate validation succeeds and that the client negotiates encryption before authentication.
Use HTTPS on port 9091 for administration. Redirecting or blocking 9090 at the firewall is safer than leaving the HTTP console reachable. If you must use 9090 during initial setup, restrict it to your administrator address and close it afterward.

Open only the listeners your deployment uses. These are the documented default ports:

The exact firewall syntax depends on the distribution. With UFW, a restrictive starting point might look like this, replacing the example administrator address with your own fixed address or management subnet:

sudo ufw status verboseOmit 5223, 7443, 5269 and 5270 when those features are not part of the deployment. Do not copy a broad allow 9091/tcp rule just to make the console convenient. If your VPS provider has a separate cloud firewall, mirror the same least-exposure policy there.
Choose client transports and federation consciously
Direct XMPP clients
Native desktop and mobile XMPP clients normally connect to the client listener. Publish 5222, and use 5223 only when the client population or compatibility requirement calls for it. Confirm that the client uses the intended domain, validates the certificate, and refuses or warns on an unencrypted fallback according to your security policy.

BOSH and WebSocket clients
Browser-based clients often need BOSH or WebSocket transport. Enable the relevant Openfire support, configure the secure endpoint, and expose 7443 only when it is actually used. Test through the same reverse proxy, load balancer or browser network path that real users will have; a working direct connection does not prove that WebSocket upgrade or BOSH requests are passing correctly.
Server-to-server federation
Federation lets your server exchange traffic with other XMPP domains. It adds certificate, DNS, trust and abuse-control work, and requires the server-to-server ports 5269 and, where configured, 5270. Keep both closed for a private deployment. Before enabling federation, define which domains may connect, how certificates are validated, how remote spam is handled, and how you will revoke access.
Add only the features you need
Openfire support documentation describes optional capabilities including WebSocket, BOSH, multi-user chat, message archive management, HTTP file upload, stream management and push-notification-related support. Availability and compliance differ between core and advanced support levels. Enable a feature only after identifying its data retention, firewall, certificate and backup implications.

- Multi-user chat: decide who may create rooms, moderate them and retain their histories.
- Message archive management: define retention, deletion and access rules before storing searchable history.
- HTTP file upload: set storage limits, malware controls and cleanup procedures; files may consume more disk than messages.
- Stream management: test reconnect and offline delivery behavior with the clients you support.
- Push notifications: document the external notification dependency and the data it receives.
Install plugins from a trusted source, record their versions, and test upgrades on a clone or staging VPS. A plugin can add listeners, database tables, scheduled jobs or new secrets, so treat it as part of the production change record.

These checks are operational acceptance tests to perform on your own server; they are not a claim that a particular deployment has already passed them.
- DNS: resolve the XMPP domain from an external network. Confirm A or AAAA results point to the intended VPS and that any required SRV records return the expected host and port.
- Certificate names: inspect the certificate from a client network and verify the subject alternative names, validity period and complete chain.
- Administrator access: reach 9091 from an approved address, confirm that 9090 is blocked or restricted, and verify that an unapproved address cannot load either console.
- Client login: create a test account, sign in with a supported client, exchange messages, sign out, and confirm that the account cannot authenticate with an incorrect password.
- Encryption: inspect the client connection details and server logs to confirm encrypted negotiation before credentials are sent.
- Transport features: if using BOSH or WebSocket, test a browser client through the public endpoint, including reconnects and idle timeouts.
- Federation: if enabled, test a controlled conversation with an approved remote domain and verify that an unapproved peer is rejected according to policy.
- Restart behavior: run
sudo systemctl restart openfire, watchsudo systemctl status openfire, and verify that the service returns after a VPS reboot. - Recovery: restore a copy of the database and configuration in a separate test environment and document the time and steps required to bring the service back.
Routine operations and common failure modes
Openfire will not start
Check systemctl status openfire and the Openfire log first. Confirm the Java major version, file ownership, available disk space, database reachability, and whether another process already occupies a required port. Correct the underlying error before increasing restart limits or repeatedly restarting the service.

Clients cannot connect
Verify DNS from the client’s network, then check both the VPS firewall and any provider-level firewall. Confirm that the client is using the right domain and port, that the listener is enabled, and that the certificate covers the name the client actually requested. A successful login from the VPS itself does not prove that an external path is open.
TLS validation fails
Check the certificate names, expiration, intermediate chain, keystore selection and private-key permissions. A recently renewed certificate may not be active until Openfire reloads it. Restart only after confirming that the new keystore is readable by the service account and that the previous certificate remains available for rollback.
The administration console is exposed
Inspect both host and cloud firewall rules. Remove public rules for 9090 and 9091, allow 9091 only from trusted addresses or a VPN, and use an SSH tunnel when a temporary remote session is necessary. Changing the URL without changing the listener or firewall does not reduce exposure.
A database migration or upgrade fails
Stop and back up before retrying. Verify that the database account has the required privileges, that the Java and Openfire versions are supported together, and that the package manager has not left a mixed installation under both /usr/share/openfire and /opt/openfire. Keep a tested rollback plan rather than deleting the old data directory.
Upgrade and backup discipline
Track Openfire, Java, operating-system, plugin and database versions as one compatibility set. Before an upgrade, capture a restorable database backup, copy configuration and keystores securely, record enabled plugins and firewall rules, and test the new package in a staging environment when possible. Apply the upgrade during a maintenance window, watch the service log, test administrator and client sign-in, and verify that encrypted connections and scheduled jobs still work.
For production, an external database often simplifies independent backup and recovery, but it does not remove the need to back up Openfire configuration and secrets. Test both a database restore and a complete VPS rebuild. The most useful recovery document states the DNS changes, Java installation, package location, database connection setup, keystore import, firewall rules and service-manager commands in the order an operator must perform them.
