Nextcloud Office is the Nextcloud integration app; Collabora Online performs the browser-based editing. Nextcloud’s Server Administration Manual describes the relationship plainly: Nextcloud Office is built on Collabora Online and requires a dedicated service running next to the Nextcloud web-server stack.
A standalone installation therefore has at least three moving parts:

- Nextcloud: stores accounts and files and provides the Office app interface.
- Collabora Online or CODE: converts and edits documents in the browser.
- An HTTPS edge: normally a reverse proxy that publishes Collabora and carries normal HTTP requests and WebSocket connections.
A useful way to picture the request flow is: the browser opens Nextcloud, Nextcloud reads the Office discovery information from Collabora, and the browser then loads editor assets and opens a live session against the Collabora hostname. The file remains associated with Nextcloud storage, but the editing process is handled by Collabora. That is why a local container address that only the Nextcloud server can reach is not enough for a normal standalone deployment.
When a user opens an ODT or DOCX file, the browser reaches the public Collabora endpoint for discovery data, editor assets, capabilities, and a live editing session. Both the Nextcloud hostname and the Collabora hostname must therefore be reachable from the user’s browser.
Choose a deployment route
Nextcloud documents four main ways to provide the Collabora service. Select one before creating DNS records, because the choice determines who maintains the office server and where the reverse proxy runs.

AIO and built-in CODE minimize decisions. Standalone Docker and native packages add proxy, update, and certificate work but make the Collabora service easier to isolate and tune operationally. Nextcloud’s package list includes Debian 11 and 12, Ubuntu 20.04, 22.04 and 24.04, RHEL/CentOS families, and SLES/openSUSE, as well as Docker. Check the current support matrix before choosing a package, because supported operating-system versions change.
How to decide
- Choose AIO when you want an integrated Nextcloud installation with Office already included and do not need to operate each service independently.
- Choose built-in CODE for personal use or a small team where simplicity is more important than maximum performance or advanced scalability.
- Choose standalone Docker when your existing operations are container-based, when you want an independently replaceable Collabora service, or when the Nextcloud web container should not also carry the editor.
- Choose native packages when your organization standardizes on system services and wants operating-system-level service management instead of a container runtime.
There is no universal performance number to use as a buying or sizing promise. Nextcloud’s published material does not provide a general CPU, RAM, storage, or concurrent-user figure that applies to every document mix. Test the workload you actually have, especially before moving from a personal installation to a busy team service.
Prerequisites before installing Collabora
Prepare the public names and network path first. Retrofitting these items after the editor is installed is a common cause of confusing failures.

- A host that can run Docker, or a Linux distribution supported by the current Collabora packages.
- A dedicated subdomain or second domain for the office service, such as
office.example.com, with DNS pointing to the reverse proxy. - Valid SSL/TLS certificates for both the Nextcloud hostname and the Collabora hostname. The certificate name must match the name users actually open.
- A reverse proxy in front of Collabora. Apache examples use the
proxy,proxy_wstunnel,proxy_http, andsslmodules; Nginx is also supported. - Firewall and routing rules that let a user’s browser reach both public hostnames. Server-to-server reachability alone is insufficient because the browser loads the editor and opens its WebSocket session.
Decide whether the proxy runs on the same host as Docker or on another edge machine. The Docker example below binds Collabora only to loopback, so the proxy must be on that host (or an equivalent local forwarding path) to reach port 9980.
DNS, certificates and proxy design
Create a separate office hostname
Create an A or AAAA record for the office name and point it at the address that accepts HTTPS. Keep the public URL stable; changing it later requires updating the Office setting in every Nextcloud instance that uses it. The example names cloud.example.com for Nextcloud and office.example.com for Collabora are placeholders—replace them with your real names.

Use a name that resolves correctly from the networks where users work. Split-horizon DNS is possible, but it must still produce a certificate-valid, reachable endpoint for each client network. Test the name from a normal user workstation, not only from the server’s shell.
Terminate HTTPS at the edge
Use a certificate valid for the public Collabora hostname. The browser should reach https://office.example.com without a certificate warning and without an HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect loop. If TLS is terminated by a load balancer, make sure the proxy forwards the original HTTPS scheme to the Collabora service.
Preserve the required paths and upgrades
The proxy must forward these Collabora paths without destructive rewrites:
/browserfor browser-side editor assets./hosting/discoveryfor the discovery XML that Nextcloud uses to learn supported formats and actions./hosting/capabilitiesfor capability information./coolfor the current Collabora API and document sessions./cool/.../wsfor the primary editing WebSocket, plus the administrative WebSocket when that feature is enabled./loolwhen compatibility forwarding is required by the documented configuration.
WebSocket upgrade headers must pass through unchanged. A proxy that serves the ordinary HTML response but blocks the /cool upgrade can leave the editor spinning forever or fail only after a document is selected. Avoid a catch-all rewrite that sends every path to a Nextcloud login page; Collabora needs to receive these paths directly.
Install Collabora CODE with Docker
The official Docker pattern keeps CODE private on loopback and lets the HTTPS proxy publish it. Run these commands on a Docker-capable host after substituting your actual Nextcloud hostname:
- Pull the image:
docker pull collabora/code - Start the container with the Nextcloud domain allow-list, automatic restart, and the local port binding:
docker run -t -d -p 127.0.0.1:9980:9980 -e 'aliasgroup1=https://cloud.example.com:443' --restart always --cap-add MKNOD collabora/code - Configure the reverse proxy for the public office hostname. Forward the paths listed above to
127.0.0.1:9980, enable HTTP proxying and WebSocket tunnelling, and serve the valid certificate for the office name. - From a browser, open the office hostname over HTTPS and verify that the proxy is answering. From the Nextcloud host or container, request
/hosting/discoverythrough the public office URL; a response confirms that DNS, TLS and the basic proxy route are working.
Use the environment-variable syntax documented for the CODE release you install. The aliasgroup1 value must identify the real Nextcloud URL, including the scheme and port when required. If your deployment has more than one approved Nextcloud hostname, configure the corresponding current alias format rather than copying an obsolete example.

The command is intentionally small: it does not create a persistent application database or publish a second public port. Your operational configuration lives in the launch command, container environment, proxy configuration, DNS, and certificate management. Save those details in your deployment notes so a replacement container can be recreated exactly.
Why the loopback binding matters
-p 127.0.0.1:9980:9980 prevents direct exposure of CODE on the host’s network interfaces. Only the local reverse proxy can reach the container port, so clients use the certificate, access controls and logging enforced at the HTTPS edge. If your proxy is on a different machine, bind and firewall the service according to that topology instead of blindly using loopback.

Enable Nextcloud Office and connect the service
- Sign in to Nextcloud with an administrator account.
- Open Apps, select Office & text, locate Nextcloud Office, and install or enable it.
- Go to Administration settings → Office.
- Enter the public Collabora URL, for example
https://office.example.com. Enter the public URL, nothttp://127.0.0.1:9980and not an internal container name. - Save the setting and open a small ODT or DOCX file. The browser should load the editor rather than downloading the file or remaining on a loading screen.
The URL in Nextcloud must be reachable by the browser that opens the document. A private address can work for a single-host test only when the user’s browser can resolve and reach it; it is not the standalone public pattern documented for CODE.
If the setting is saved but the editor still fails, do not immediately reinstall the app. First compare the URL saved in Nextcloud with the URL in the browser, the DNS record, the certificate subject, and the hostname allowed in CODE. A one-character hostname difference can look like a generic office-server failure.

Run these checks in order, using the same public names that an end user will use:
- Discovery: request
https://office.example.com/hosting/discovery. Confirm that DNS resolves to the proxy and that the certificate is valid. - Capabilities: check
/hosting/capabilitiesthrough the same host. A proxy rule that covers only the root path is incomplete. - WebSocket path: inspect proxy logs while opening a document and confirm that the
/cool/.../wsrequest upgrades instead of returning a normal HTTP error. - Domain allow-list: verify that the CODE alias setting contains the exact Nextcloud hostname, including the correct scheme and port.
- File test: open one small ODT and one DOCX, edit a sentence, save, close, and reopen. This checks both the editor session and the return path to Nextcloud storage.
Do not use a successful response from the discovery endpoint as proof that editing is complete. Discovery can work while WebSocket upgrades, alias validation or document callbacks are still misconfigured.
Maintenance and safe updates
Container replacement is the documented Docker update method:
- Pull the newer image with
docker pull collabora/code, or pull the specific tested tag you have chosen. - List running containers and identify the current CODE container.
- Stop and remove the old container.
- Start a replacement with the same domain allow-list, port binding, restart policy and capability settings.
- Recheck the public discovery endpoint and open a test document before announcing the update.
Record the image tag, launch command and date of each change. Pin a tested tag when predictable upgrades matter, and keep the previous tag and command available for rollback. Review Nextcloud and Collabora security advisories as part of normal patch management; the documentation does not promise a fixed release cadence.
Schedule replacement during a quiet period because active editing sessions can be interrupted when the old container stops. A brief maintenance notice gives users a chance to save documents. After the new container starts, test both discovery and an actual save, not just the container’s running status.
A container replacement should not require changing the public office URL. Keeping that URL stable means the Nextcloud Office setting and DNS record remain valid while the service image changes.

Troubleshoot editor failures in the right order
The discovery URL does not respond
- Check that the office DNS record points to the proxy’s public address.
- Confirm that the certificate covers the exact office hostname and that the proxy is listening on HTTPS.
- From the Nextcloud host or container, request the public
/hosting/discoveryURL. If that fails, fix routing, firewall or TLS before changing Nextcloud settings.
The editor loads indefinitely
- Inspect proxy logs for the
/coolWebSocket request. - Confirm that WebSocket upgrade headers are enabled; ordinary HTTP proxying alone is not enough.
- Check that the proxy forwards the full
/cool/.../wspath and does not strip a required prefix. - Look for an HTTP-to-HTTPS loop caused by incorrect forwarded scheme headers.
Nextcloud reports that the office server is unreachable
- Re-enter the public URL in Administration settings → Office, including
https://and the correct hostname. - Verify that the URL works from the user’s browser, not only from the Docker host.
- Ensure the CODE alias or domain allow-list matches the Nextcloud hostname exactly.
Documents fail only for one hostname or installation
This usually indicates an allow-list or DNS mismatch. Compare the hostname shown in the browser address bar, the Nextcloud configured URL, and the value passed to the CODE container. A reverse proxy can be healthy while CODE rejects a request from a hostname it was not told to trust.

Collabora documentation includes /lool compatibility forwarding. Preserve that route when your installed release or existing configuration requires it, while also forwarding the current /cool routes. Do not replace current paths with only the legacy route.
Security and operational boundaries
- Expose only the HTTPS proxy publicly; keep the container port private whenever the topology allows it.
- Use certificates that renew automatically and monitor renewal failures before expiry.
- Restrict the CODE domain or alias setting to the Nextcloud hostnames you actually operate.
- Keep Nextcloud, the Office app, the Collabora image or package, and the reverse proxy patched on separate schedules when they are separately managed.
- Capture proxy and container logs during a document-opening test so WebSocket and certificate errors can be correlated by time.
- Do not invent CPU, memory or concurrency guarantees from generic examples. The cited Nextcloud documentation does not publish universal sizing numbers; capacity depends on document mix, users and deployment design, so validate your own workload before expanding access.
Support and licensing expectations
Nextcloud’s portal states that Nextcloud Office requires a Collabora Online server to run. It also says that Nextcloud GmbH support for Collabora installations requires an Enterprise Subscription with the Collabora option. That is a support-policy statement, not proof that every community CODE deployment is unavailable. Confirm the current terms for the edition and organization size you intend to operate.
For a personal installation or small team, built-in CODE can be the least demanding starting point. If you need a separately maintained service, clearer isolation, or a path toward heavier use, choose standalone Docker or a supported package and invest the extra time in the proxy and update process.

Can I run Collabora CODE in Docker?
Yes. The official pattern uses the collabora/code image, binds port 9980 to loopback, sets the allowed Nextcloud URL, and publishes the service through an HTTPS reverse proxy. The proxy must handle both ordinary HTTP paths and WebSocket upgrades.
Do I need a separate domain for Collabora?
The documented standalone pattern uses a dedicated subdomain or second domain such as office.example.com. It gives the browser a clear public endpoint and lets you issue a matching TLS certificate. A separate name is especially useful when Nextcloud and Collabora run on different hosts.
Can I enter the Docker container address in Nextcloud?

Why does discovery work while the document never opens?

Is built-in CODE suitable for a company?
Nextcloud describes built-in CODE as intended for personal use or small teams. It is easier to start but slower and without the advanced scalability features of a standalone service.
