The simplest documented way to run Rocket.Chat on your own Linux VPS is Docker Compose, with MongoDB supplied as a stateful service and a reverse proxy providing HTTPS. For a public production workspace you need a domain whose DNS A record or CNAME resolves to the VPS, Docker Compose v2, Git, persistent storage, and a backup plan. Traefik is the easier ingress choice when you want Docker-aware routing and automatic Let’s Encrypt certificates; Nginx is a good fit when your team already operates Nginx and is comfortable configuring Certbot and proxy rules manually.

This guide walks through the deployment from a fresh VPS to a verified HTTPS workspace, then covers release pinning, sizing, MongoDB maintenance, upgrades, backups, restore testing, and the failure modes that most often stop an installation.

What the self-hosted Rocket.Chat stack contains

A production deployment is more than one application container. The usual layout is:

  • Rocket.Chat: the web and real-time application, normally published internally on port 3000.
  • MongoDB: the stateful database for users, messages, settings, indexes, and other workspace data.
  • Reverse proxy: Traefik or Nginx terminates TLS and forwards requests to Rocket.Chat.
  • Persistent storage: a VPS volume for MongoDB and application data, plus separate off-server backup storage.
  • DNS and certificates: a hostname pointing to the VPS and a certificate issued for that hostname.

Rocket.Chat’s documentation describes Docker and Docker Compose as a highly recommended deployment method because it is simple and flexible. The official Compose repository supplies a starting Compose file, environment example, reverse-proxy configuration, monitoring configuration, and database setup. Treat those files as the source of truth for the release you are installing rather than copying an old tutorial unchanged.

Prerequisites before you create containers

VPS and operating system

Choose a supported Linux distribution and create a normal administrator account with sudo access. Do not operate the entire installation from a root shell. Apply operating-system updates before installing Docker, and make sure the VPS has enough disk space for the database, uploaded files, logs, Docker images, and at least one local staging copy of a backup.

Hostname and DNS

Pick the final public hostname, such as chat.example.com. Create an A record for an IPv4 address or a CNAME to a hostname that ultimately resolves to the VPS. Check the result from a separate network before requesting a certificate:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
dig +short chat.example.com

The answer must contain the VPS public address. If the name still points elsewhere, Let’s Encrypt validation will fail and a proxy configured for HTTPS cannot work reliably.

Network access

Allow SSH and the web ports through both the VPS firewall and any provider-level firewall. A typical host firewall policy allows TCP 22 for SSH, TCP 80 for HTTP certificate challenges and redirects, and TCP 443 for HTTPS. Do not expose MongoDB to the public internet; it should be reachable only on the private Docker network.

The official deployment guidance also notes that firewall rules may need to permit Rocket.Chat cloud-service URLs for features such as push notifications and the marketplace. If those features are required, review the current allow-list in the release documentation rather than creating a broad outbound exception.

Software prerequisites

  • Docker Engine.
  • Docker Compose v2, invoked as docker compose.
  • Git.
  • A supported Rocket.Chat release and its compatible MongoDB version.

Official Docker images and Helm charts bundle the Node.js runtime. A manual installation has to supply the Node.js engine required by the selected release, which is one reason Compose is less error-prone for a VPS deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Traefik or Nginx for HTTPS

Decision point Traefik Nginx
Routing model Discovers Docker services and routes from container labels or the supplied Compose configuration. Proxies a hostname to the local Rocket.Chat service, normally on port 3000, using explicit server-block configuration.
TLS automation Can request and renew Let’s Encrypt certificates automatically when DNS and ports are correct. Requires manual Certbot installation, challenge handling, renewal checks, and Nginx configuration.
Best fit A new deployment where you want the fewest moving parts outside Compose. An organization that already standardizes on Nginx and has an established configuration and monitoring process.
Operational trade-off Less hand-written proxy configuration, but you must understand Docker labels, certificate storage, and proxy logs. Familiar and highly configurable, but every proxy and certificate change is your responsibility.

Do not run two independent services competing for ports 80 and 443. Pick one ingress design, remove or disable any preinstalled web server that would bind those ports, and keep the certificate storage protected and persistent.

Step 1: Prepare and secure the VPS

  1. Log in with the administrator account and update the system. On a Debian- or Ubuntu-family host, the usual sequence is:
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt full-upgrade -y
  2. Set the host name and time zone if your operations policy requires it. Correct time is important for logs, certificate validation, and incident investigation.
  3. Enable the firewall. Permit SSH before enabling the firewall so you do not lock yourself out:
    sudo ufw allow OpenSSH
    sudo ufw allow 80/tcp
    sudo ufw allow 443/tcp
    sudo ufw enable
    sudo ufw status verbose
  4. Install security updates regularly. Use SSH keys, disable password authentication only after key login is confirmed, and restrict SSH to a trusted source range where practical.
  5. Confirm DNS from the VPS and from another network. A local hosts-file entry is not sufficient for public certificate issuance.

Keep a recovery path through the VPS provider’s console. Firewall edits, kernel updates, and Docker changes can otherwise turn a small configuration mistake into a lockout.

Step 2: Install Docker Compose v2 and Git

Install Docker Engine and the Compose v2 plugin using the package instructions for your Linux distribution. Avoid mixing an obsolete standalone docker-compose binary with a modern Compose file. Verify the tools before downloading the application configuration:

docker --version
docker compose version
git --version

Adding your administrator to the docker group permits Docker commands without sudo, but membership effectively grants root-equivalent control of the host. Do this only when your operational policy accepts that risk:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo usermod -aG docker adminuser

Sign out and back in, or reboot, before testing the new group membership. If policy requires a stricter privilege boundary, keep using sudo docker and sudo docker compose instead.

Step 3: Fetch the official Compose configuration

Create a dedicated deployment directory and clone the official repository:

sudo mkdir -p /opt/rocketchat
sudo chown adminuser:adminuser /opt/rocketchat
cd /opt/rocketchat
git clone https://github.com/RocketChat/rocketchat-compose.git

Enter the cloned directory and inspect the available branches or release tags. Rocket.Chat environment variables and service names can change between releases. Pin a supported tag or commit for production instead of tracking an unreviewed moving branch:

cd /opt/rocketchat/rocketchat-compose
git tag --sort=-version:refname | head
git status

Use the release’s own README and example files to select the correct checkout. Do not edit the Compose YAML casually; the project’s guidance is to keep deployment settings in .env and upgrade the repository configuration deliberately when moving releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Configure production variables

Copy the supplied environment example if the checkout provides one, then edit the resulting .env file:

cp .env.example .env
nano .env

The exact variable names are release-specific, but a public HTTPS deployment needs these values conceptually:

  • DOMAIN: the hostname only, without https://, for example chat.example.com.
  • ROOT_URL: the complete public URL, for example https://chat.example.com.
  • Let’s Encrypt switch: enabled for the Traefik configuration when you want automatic certificate issuance.
  • Renewal email: a monitored address for certificate notices.
  • HTTPS protocol: selected for the public URL and proxy configuration.
  • Database and service values: copied from the release’s example rather than invented from an older guide.

Keep secrets out of shell history and source control. Set restrictive permissions on .env, review which variables are consumed by each service, and store a protected copy of the configuration separately from the VPS. DNS must already resolve to this machine before the first Traefik start; otherwise the ACME challenge cannot reach the proxy.

Traefik-specific considerations

Use the supplied Traefik Compose configuration and persist its certificate store on a volume. The proxy needs access to Docker’s service metadata and must be able to receive traffic on ports 80 and 443. A certificate request can fail because of stale DNS, a second service already occupying a port, a blocked provider firewall, or an incorrect hostname in DOMAIN and ROOT_URL.

Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.

Nginx-specific considerations

If Nginx is your chosen proxy, configure it to forward the public hostname to the local Rocket.Chat listener on port 3000 and preserve the headers required for HTTPS and WebSocket connections. Install and configure Certbot for the same hostname, then test both the Nginx syntax and renewal process. Nginx does not automatically discover a changed Docker container, so keep its upstream and reload procedure documented.

Step 5: Start the stack and verify it

From the repository directory, validate the rendered configuration before starting containers:

docker compose config

Fix missing variables, duplicate ports, or malformed YAML before bringing the stack up:

docker compose up -d

Watch startup output and check the service state:

docker compose ps
docker compose logs -f --tail=200

Use Ctrl+C to leave the log view; it does not stop the services. A healthy result normally shows the Rocket.Chat application, MongoDB, and the selected proxy running without a restart loop. Open https://chat.example.com in a browser, confirm the certificate is valid, and complete the initial administrator and workspace setup.

If the site loads over HTTP only, check the proxy and DNS rather than changing Rocket.Chat’s public URL repeatedly. If the browser reports a WebSocket or real-time connection error, verify proxy upgrade headers, the published hostname, and the container logs. The first administrator should immediately enable appropriate registration, invitation, and moderation policies for your community.

Security settings after first login

  • Require strong administrator passwords and enable multi-factor authentication where the release supports it.
  • Disable open self-registration if the workspace is private; use invitations or an identity provider instead.
  • Review file-upload limits, allowed file types, retention rules, and antivirus integration according to your threat model.
  • Keep MongoDB private on the Docker network and avoid publishing its port on the VPS.
  • Limit access to the Docker socket and protect the Traefik certificate store, which contains private keys.
  • Forward host and container logs to a system with retention and access controls if the VPS is not your only observability location.

Operating the installation over time

Pin releases and read compatibility notes

Rocket.Chat requirements change by release. For the 8.x line, the current requirements page lists MongoDB 8.0 or later. That is a release-specific requirement, not a promise that every earlier or later release uses the same database version. Before an upgrade, verify the target Rocket.Chat tag, the required MongoDB version, supported operating systems, and any migration notes.

Plan disk and memory growth

Messages, indexes, uploaded files, logs, images, and backup archives all consume storage. Monitor filesystem usage and MongoDB data growth instead of waiting for the VPS to fill. Keep Docker image cleanup controlled; deleting an image that a rollback needs can extend an outage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Schedule maintenance

Use a maintenance window for upgrades that restart the application or database. Record the current Git commit, image tags, environment file, database version, and backup identifier before changing anything. After the upgrade, test login, message creation, file upload, search, notifications, integrations, and administration—not just the landing page.

Monitor the right signals

  • Container restart counts and health status.
  • CPU, memory, swap, disk space, and disk latency on the VPS.
  • MongoDB storage, replication or journaling errors where applicable, and slow queries.
  • TLS certificate expiration and ACME renewal failures.
  • HTTP error rates, WebSocket disconnects, queue or job backlogs, and failed outbound notifications.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Backups: what to save and how to test them

A snapshot of the VPS is useful but is not a complete backup strategy. Schedule MongoDB dumps, copy them to storage outside the VPS, and preserve the Compose configuration and protected environment values needed to recreate the deployment. Encrypt archives in transit and at rest, restrict access, and define a retention period that matches your workspace’s compliance needs.

Create a logical MongoDB dump

The exact database service name is supplied by the selected Compose release. Discover it first:

docker compose config --services

Then use the service name shown by that command with the official backup procedure. A common pattern is to stream a compressed archive to a protected host path:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
docker compose exec mongodb mongodump --archive --gzip > /var/backups/rocketchat/rocket-chat-$(date +%Y-%m-%d).archive.gz

If the service is not named mongodb, substitute the name from your file. Confirm that the resulting archive is non-empty, record its checksum, and copy it off the VPS. A backup that remains on the same disk as the live database does not protect you from disk loss, ransomware, or an administrator mistake.

Rehearse a restore

Before relying on a backup, restore it into an isolated test stack or a separate VPS using the release’s documented mongorestore procedure. Verify users, messages, indexes, uploaded-file references, integrations, and administrator access. Measure how long the rehearsal takes and write down every required secret and configuration file. Restore testing is the evidence that a dump is usable, not merely that a file exists.

Coordinate backups with upgrades

Take and verify a fresh backup immediately before a database or Rocket.Chat upgrade. Keep the previous image tags and repository commit until post-upgrade checks are complete. Do not roll back an application against a database that has already undergone an irreversible migration without following the release’s rollback guidance.

How much VPS capacity do you need?

There is no universal CPU, RAM, or disk size for Rocket.Chat. Requirements vary with organization size, concurrent activity, message history, file uploads, integrations, search workload, retention policy, and deployment method. Treat a provider’s smallest plan as a test environment only unless measured workload data proves otherwise.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Capacity factor What to evaluate
CPU Headroom for Rocket.Chat request handling, background jobs, database indexes, compression, and proxy encryption during peaks.
Memory RAM for the application and MongoDB together, with room for the operating system and filesystem cache; avoid relying on swap as normal capacity.
Storage SSD capacity for MongoDB, indexes, uploads, logs, Docker layers, and local backup staging. IOPS matter when search and message volume rise.
Network Reliable inbound and outbound transfer for clients, uploads, integrations, push services, and remote backups.
Resilience Provider snapshots, independent backups, restore options, and a second location if downtime or data loss has significant impact.
Geography A region close to most users reduces latency, while a separate backup region improves disaster recovery.
Database compatibility Support for the MongoDB version required by the Rocket.Chat release you selected.

Start with conservative headroom, measure real usage, and scale vertically or split services only when monitoring shows the bottleneck. A larger VPS does not compensate for an untested backup or an incompatible MongoDB upgrade.

Troubleshooting checklist

Certificate issuance fails

  • Confirm the DNS A or CNAME record resolves publicly to this VPS.
  • Check that ports 80 and 443 are open at both the host and provider firewall.
  • Stop any competing web server using those ports.
  • Verify the hostname contains no scheme in DOMAIN and that ROOT_URL uses the correct HTTPS URL.
  • Read the proxy logs for ACME challenge and rate-limit errors before retrying.

The application restarts continuously

  • Run docker compose ps and inspect the failing service’s logs.
  • Run docker compose config to reveal missing or malformed environment values.
  • Check MongoDB compatibility, storage capacity, and authentication settings.
  • Confirm that the selected image tag matches the Compose files and release notes.

The browser shows a blank page or connection errors

  • Check whether the proxy can reach the Rocket.Chat container on its internal network.
  • Verify that the public URL in ROOT_URL exactly matches the browser hostname.
  • Inspect WebSocket proxy headers and mixed-content warnings.
  • Test from an external network to distinguish DNS caching from a server failure.

Push notifications or marketplace functions do not work

Review outbound firewall rules and the current Rocket.Chat cloud-service URL requirements. A deployment can serve local web traffic correctly while blocking the external endpoints needed for those features.

An upgrade leaves the workspace unhealthy

Stop further changes, preserve logs, and identify the exact pre-upgrade image tags, Git commit, environment file, and backup. Check the release’s migration and rollback instructions. Restore the backup into an isolated environment first if you need to distinguish application incompatibility from database corruption.

A practical production checklist

  • Supported Linux distribution, patched host, non-root administrator, and tested SSH recovery.
  • Public DNS record pointing to the VPS before certificate issuance.
  • Docker Engine, Docker Compose v2, and Git verified.
  • Pinned Rocket.Chat release with matching MongoDB version.
  • Traefik or Nginx selected, not both competing for ports.
  • DOMAIN, ROOT_URL, HTTPS mode, Let’s Encrypt setting, and renewal email reviewed.
  • Persistent volumes protected from accidental deletion.
  • MongoDB dumps scheduled, copied off-server, encrypted, and periodically restored in a test environment.
  • Monitoring for disk, memory, restarts, certificates, database health, and application errors.
  • Upgrade runbook with maintenance window, pre-upgrade backup, validation tests, and rollback decision.

For most Linux VPS operators, Docker Compose remains the shortest path from an empty server to a maintainable Rocket.Chat workspace. The durable parts of the design are not a particular VPS size or a one-time install command; they are correct DNS and TLS, a release-compatible MongoDB, persistent storage, observable services, and backups that have actually survived a restore rehearsal.
