Plan for at least 2 GB of RAM, two CPU cores faster than 2 GHz and 10 GB of free disk; allocating more than 50 GB gives a practical starting point for libraries, version history and growth. Keep Seafile’s data and database on persistent storage, put a real hostname in front of the server, and enable HTTPS through Caddy or another correctly configured reverse proxy before sharing anything publicly.

What a self-hosted Seafile server does
Seafile is a file synchronization and collaboration platform that you run on infrastructure you control. The server stores libraries, accounts, metadata and sharing permissions; official desktop, command-line and mobile clients then synchronize selected libraries to users’ devices. A browser interface handles administration and web access, while share links let you give other people access to files or folders without installing a client.

On a VPS, the operating system, Docker engine, Seafile containers, database and storage all live on one remotely hosted machine. That arrangement avoids maintaining physical hardware at home, but it makes capacity planning, updates, firewall rules, certificates and backups your responsibility. A VPS provider supplies compute and a network connection; it does not automatically protect your Seafile data from deletion, a compromised account or a failed disk.
Choose the edition and size the VPS
Community Edition is free and open source and is aimed at individuals, developers and small teams. Professional Edition is a separate proprietary product with enterprise capabilities. Seafile’s pricing documentation allows Professional Edition to run without a paid license for up to three users; that is a limited allowance, not unlimited free use.

How to interpret the minimums
The Community Edition figures are a floor for a basic installation, not a promise that every workload will feel fast. Concurrent uploads, full-text or document features, many libraries, thumbnail generation and database activity all consume memory and CPU. The 10 GB disk figure covers an installation with little data; it is not a sensible ceiling for a file server. Start above 50 GB if you expect game captures, installers, project archives or version history to accumulate.
Compare an edition on four separate questions:
- Do you need a Professional-only feature or will Community Edition meet the requirement?
- How many people and devices will be active at the same time?
- How much CPU and RAM headroom is needed for uploads, indexing and other VPS services?
- Can your organisation accept the applicable proprietary licensing and support costs?
You can usually resize a VPS later, but moving a busy installation is easier when storage locations and backups were designed correctly from the beginning.

Prerequisites before installing Seafile
A supported Linux VPS
Provision a current Linux distribution supported by the Seafile manual you are following. Choose a plan that meets the edition guidance, has durable block storage, and permits inbound web traffic. Record the VPS address, distribution version, administrator account and the location of attached storage before you begin.
A domain or subdomain
Use a hostname such as files.example.net rather than asking users to remember an address that may change. You will create DNS records pointing that hostname to the VPS and use the same name as Seafile’s server URL and Caddy’s certificate name. The hostname must resolve publicly before an automated certificate can be issued.
Administrative access and a recovery plan
Have key-based SSH access ready and keep a second administrative path or provider console available for emergencies. Decide where off-site backups will live, who can restore them, and how recovery credentials will be protected. Keep the exact Compose files and environment values used for the installation in a protected location; without them, a restore can become a reconstruction exercise.
Prepare and secure the VPS
- Update the host. Apply the distribution’s security updates before installing application software.
- Install Docker. Follow Docker’s official installation instructions for the selected Linux distribution, as Seafile’s manual directs. Confirm that the Docker engine and Compose support work for your administrative account.
- Limit administration. Use SSH keys instead of password-only login, restrict SSH to trusted networks where practical, and enable a host firewall. Do not expose database ports or Docker’s administrative socket to the public internet.
- Choose storage locations. Ensure the filesystem that will hold Seafile data and MySQL data has enough free space, survives a container restart, and is included in the backup plan.
Docker isolates application processes, but it does not replace host security. The kernel, SSH service, firewall, Docker engine and storage permissions remain part of your attack surface.

Deploy the official Community Edition Docker stack
Seafile’s official Community Edition Docker manual is the recommended path for a new Linux VPS. Use the files for the manual version you have selected rather than mixing files from different releases. The documented bundle includes .env, seafile-server.yml, seadoc.yml and caddy.yml.
1. Create a dedicated project directory
Keep the Compose files together so upgrades, audits and restores have a known working directory:
sudo mkdir -p /opt/seafile
cd /opt/seafileThe directory is for deployment configuration. The larger, persistent libraries and database should be mapped to deliberate storage locations rather than treated as disposable container layers.
2. Download the version-matched files
From the Seafile manual, download the official .env, seafile-server.yml, seadoc.yml and caddy.yml files for the release you selected. Keep the files’ names and relative locations consistent with the documented Compose commands. Save a copy of the exact files, including comments, in your protected recovery records.

Open .env and set every required value described by that manual. Pay particular attention to:
- the public server hostname;
- the administrator account and password details;
- database credentials and other secrets;
- the host paths used for persistent Seafile and MySQL data.
Use long, unique secrets and restrict the file’s permissions so ordinary users cannot read it. Keep the hostname consistent across DNS, Seafile’s configuration and the reverse-proxy configuration. A typo in one place can produce a working container that redirects users to the wrong address or prevents certificate issuance.

4. Start the Compose stack
Run the start command specified by the selected Seafile manual from /opt/seafile. In a standard Docker Compose installation this is commonly the docker compose up -d operation, but follow the release’s documented command if it differs. The first launch initializes the database and application state, so it can take longer than later restarts.
5. Watch first-run logs
Follow the Compose logs while initialization runs. Look for successful database setup, application startup and reverse-proxy readiness. Do not create libraries or invite users until the first-run process has completed and the containers remain healthy after a restart.

Common causes are an incorrect environment value, a port already used by another service, insufficient disk space or a filesystem permission problem. Correct the cause, then restart using the documented Compose procedure.
Make storage persistent and recoverable
Protect both kinds of state
At minimum, treat the Seafile data volume and the MySQL database volume as irreplaceable state. The usual paths in this deployment are /opt/seafile-data and /opt/seafile-mysql, or deliberately chosen equivalents in your environment. The data volume contains user files and library content; the database volume contains accounts, metadata, permissions and other information needed to interpret that content. Backing up only one can leave you with files that cannot be cleanly restored or metadata that points to missing files.
Use durable host storage
Verify that those paths are on persistent VPS storage, not an ephemeral directory that disappears when a container is recreated. Check free space regularly because synchronization can stop when the filesystem is full. More than 50 GB is a practical starting recommendation for Community Edition, but the right capacity depends on file sizes, retention and the number of libraries.
Back up off-site and test restoration
- Back up the Seafile data volume.
- Back up the MySQL database volume using a method consistent with the Seafile manual and your chosen backup system.
- Keep copies away from the VPS so a host failure, deletion or account compromise does not remove the only backup.
- Record the Compose files, the matching
.envvalues and recovery credentials in a protected location. - Perform periodic restore tests on separate storage. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a verified recovery path.
Choose backup frequency according to how much recent work users can afford to lose. Coordinate application-aware database backups with file backups so the restored database and data represent a compatible point in time.

Put HTTPS and a hostname in front of Seafile
Point DNS to the VPS
Create the required DNS record for your chosen hostname and wait until it resolves to the VPS from the public internet. If you use both IPv4 and IPv6, make sure each address reaches the intended machine; an incorrect IPv6 record can make some users fail while others succeed.
Configure Caddy as the reverse proxy
Use the supplied caddy.yml and the hostname values required by the Seafile manual. Allow inbound TCP traffic for ports 80 and 443 through the VPS firewall and any provider-level firewall. Caddy can then complete the certificate challenge and serve Seafile over HTTPS. The proxy must forward browser, client and share-link traffic to the Seafile service without altering the host name expected by the application.
Test before sharing
- Open the hostname in a browser and confirm that the certificate is valid and issued for that name.
- Sign in with the administrator account over HTTPS, not an unencrypted address.
- Create a small test library, upload a few files and download them again.
- Generate a test share link and open it in a private browser window.
- Check that certificate renewal remains possible and that no HTTP-only link is being handed to users.
Do not publish links while DNS, certificate issuance or proxy routing is still being debugged. A share link copied from an incorrect hostname can spread an address that later becomes invalid.
Connect desktop, CLI and mobile clients
Once browser access works over HTTPS, install Seafile’s official desktop client on computers that need continuous synchronization, the official command-line client for scripted or server-side workflows, and the official mobile client for phones and tablets. Enter the same HTTPS hostname in each client and sign in with an account that has access to the intended libraries.
Run a controlled first sync
- Create a dedicated test library rather than pointing a client immediately at a large archive.
- Sync it to one desktop folder and confirm that a new file appears on the server.
- Edit or remove a test file and verify that the change propagates as expected.
- Repeat the check on a mobile device or with the CLI client if those workflows matter to you.
- Create a share link with the smallest practical scope and verify access from a device that is not logged in.
After the test passes, document which libraries are synchronized to which devices. Selective sync avoids filling laptops or phones with data that users do not need locally.

Keep every layer current
Follow the current Seafile manual for image, Compose and configuration updates. Also update the Linux host and Docker engine according to their security guidance. Read release notes before changing versions, preserve a backup, and keep the prior working Compose files so you can identify what changed.

Monitor the failure signals
- Disk growth in the Seafile and MySQL paths.
- Memory pressure and swap activity on the VPS.
- Containers that stop, restart repeatedly or fail health checks.
- Certificate issuance and renewal status.
- Backup completion and the results of restore tests.
- Unexpected login attempts or other firewall and SSH events.
Document routine recovery
Write down the order for stopping services, restoring database and data volumes, replacing the Compose files, checking permissions, and bringing the stack back online. Include the hostname, administrator recovery method, backup locations and credential-rotation procedure. Store that document separately from the VPS so it remains available during an outage.

Rotate administrator, database and proxy-related secrets when staff change, a credential may have been exposed, or your security policy requires it. Update the protected recovery copy of .env at the same time. Test a new login and a client connection before revoking the old credential where the service permits overlap.
Troubleshoot the problems that appear most often
The hostname does not open
Check DNS resolution from an external network, verify that the VPS firewall and provider firewall allow ports 80 and 443, and confirm that the Caddy container is running. If the VPS has multiple addresses, verify that DNS points to the address receiving traffic.
The certificate is not issued
Certificate automation needs a publicly resolvable hostname and reachable challenge ports. Correct DNS first, remove conflicting records, and inspect Caddy’s logs. Do not bypass certificate validation for real users; fix the hostname or network path instead.
Containers restart or initialization never finishes
Read the database and Seafile container logs, then check the values in .env, available RAM, free disk and directory permissions. A first launch can be slow, but repeated exits indicate a configuration or resource fault. Avoid deleting persistent volumes while investigating.

Users can log in but synchronization fails
Confirm that the client uses the HTTPS hostname, not an old address, and that the account has permission to the library. Test a small library in the browser first. If browser uploads work but a client does not, update the client and inspect its connection log before changing server data.
Storage fills unexpectedly
Inspect library growth, deleted-file retention and version history, then expand the VPS volume before it reaches capacity. Ensure backups are not consuming the same filesystem needed by live containers. A full database or data volume can interrupt both uploads and administration.
Community or Professional Edition: a practical decision
Choose Community Edition when free, open-source synchronization and sharing cover your requirements and the documented 2 GB/2-core baseline is adequate for your workload. Choose Professional Edition when a required enterprise capability justifies proprietary licensing and the larger general Docker guidance of 4 GB RAM and four CPU cores above 2 GHz. In either case, budget separately for the VPS, domain and DNS service, TLS-capable reverse proxy and off-site backup storage; those operational pieces are required to run a dependable public service, regardless of edition.
