The dependable way to receive outage emails from a Linux VPS is to connect a monitoring tool to an authenticated SMTP relay. Use Monit when you need local process, filesystem, port, protocol, and resource checks in a configuration file. Use Uptime Kuma when you want a browser dashboard, endpoint checks, status pages, and several notification channels. In either case, create a dedicated sender account, use TLS, filter noisy events, queue notifications for retry, and test the complete path before relying on it.

What you need before configuring email alerts
An alert is a chain of four components: a monitor detects an event, the monitor hands the event to an SMTP relay, the relay delivers it, and the destination mailbox accepts and displays it. A failure anywhere in that chain can make a healthy monitor appear silent.

- A monitoring process: Monit runs checks on the VPS itself. Uptime Kuma provides a web-managed dashboard and can check services and endpoints.
- An SMTP relay: You need its hostname, port, encryption mode, username, password or token, and sender policy. Do not assume that a relay accepts every port or encryption combination.
- A recipient mailbox: Use an address that is monitored by a person or an incident workflow, not an abandoned administrative alias.
- A testable failure: Plan a safe test, such as temporarily stopping a disposable service or checking a deliberately unused local port, so you can verify detection, SMTP submission, delivery, and recovery messages.
The monitoring software does not replace the relay. It submits mail to the relay, which is responsible for onward delivery. A local mail transfer agent is therefore optional rather than a requirement for these two approaches.
Monit or Uptime Kuma: which path fits your VPS?
| Decision point | Monit | Uptime Kuma |
|---|---|---|
| Primary strength | Local process, filesystem, port, protocol, and resource supervision | HTTP(S), TCP, ping, DNS, Docker, database, and other endpoint monitors |
| Configuration style | Configuration files and service entries | Browser dashboard and monitor forms |
| Alert setup | Global set alert or service-level alert statements, plus set mailserver |
Email (SMTP) notification settings in the web interface |
| Best vantage point | The VPS where Monit is installed | Wherever the Uptime Kuma instance runs; a separate host can provide an independent view |
| Operational overhead | Small resident agent, but configuration syntax and file permissions matter | Dashboard deployment, account security, updates, and protection of the web interface |
| Retry controls | Documented event queue and multiple mail-server support | Use the installed release’s notification and retry behavior; exact controls vary by version |
Choose Monit if the important question is “Is this process, mount point, or local port healthy?” Choose Uptime Kuma if you need a dashboard, public status pages, or checks that resemble what a user experiences. Running both is reasonable when local recovery and independent external observation serve different purposes.

Prepare SMTP safely
Collect the relay details
Record the relay hostname, submission port, encryption mode, authentication method, sender address, recipient address, and any provider restrictions before editing the monitor. Monit’s documentation describes port 465 for SSL and port 25 for TLS or non-secure connections as defaults; a relay may instead require another submission port, such as the 587 shown in the example below. Treat those values as relay-specific and verify the current requirement with the provider.
Use a dedicated sender identity
Create a monitoring-only mailbox or SMTP credential. Give it only the ability to submit alerts, restrict the permitted recipients when the relay supports that control, and avoid reusing a personal password. Store the credential in a configuration file readable only by the monitoring service account and root. Check backups, configuration management, and support bundles for accidental copies, and rotate the credential according to the relay provider’s current policy.

Use an authenticated relay with certificate validation and TLS where the provider supports it. Do not downgrade to an unauthenticated or clear-text connection merely because it is easier to configure. If a provider requires implicit SSL on one port and explicit TLS on another, select the mode that matches the relay’s instructions; selecting the wrong mode commonly causes a handshake or authentication failure.
Path 1: configure Monit email alerts
Monit can send alerts globally for all monitored services or locally for one service. Its official guidance describes the global set alert statement and the per-service alert statement. The following is a conceptual template; adapt it to the syntax accepted by your installed Monit version and protect the credentials.

1. Install and identify the active Monit configuration
Install Monit from your Linux distribution or approved package source, then identify the main configuration file and any included directory used by that package. Distribution layouts differ, so do not assume that a file copied from another VPS is loaded. Confirm which user runs the service and which directories it can read.
2. Define the SMTP server
Set set mailserver with the relay hostname, the required port, username, password, and SSL/TLS option. The credentials in the example are placeholders, not values to paste unchanged. Keep the file out of world-readable locations and verify that the relay’s certificate name matches its hostname.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute3. Choose recipients and filter events
Add a global set alert for the mailbox that should receive alerts. Monit supports event filters with only on { ... } and exclusions with but not on { ... }. Start with events that represent an actionable outage—such as timeout, nonexistence, connection failure, or a resource threshold—rather than forwarding every state transition. Add a second recipient only when somebody is responsible for acting on it.
4. Add a service check
For a process, reference its real PID file and provide start and stop commands that are safe to run repeatedly. For a local web service, the example checks host 127.0.0.1, port 8080, and the HTTP protocol. Change all three values to match the service actually listening on your VPS. A check against the wrong PID file or port creates a permanent false alarm.

5. Add the checks that matter to your failure mode
Monit can supervise processes, filesystems, ports, protocols, and resource conditions. Use a process check for a crashed daemon, a port or protocol check for a listener that is present but not responding correctly, and a filesystem or resource condition for capacity and saturation risks. Keep each condition tied to a response someone can take; an alert with no operational consequence trains recipients to ignore later messages.
6. Preserve events while the relay is unavailable
Monit documents an event queue configured with set eventqueue basedir .... Point the queue at a persistent directory that exists, is writable by Monit, and is included in your backup or recovery plan when appropriate. Queueing allows events to be retried after the mail server recovers, but it does not make an undeliverable recipient address valid and does not replace monitoring the queue itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute7. Validate, reload, and test
- Run the syntax check supplied by your installed Monit package before reloading the daemon. Fix every parse error rather than assuming an ignored line is harmless.
- Reload Monit and inspect its status output to confirm that the intended service entry is active.
- Use Monit’s SMTP test capability, where available, to verify relay authentication and transport independently of a service outage.
- Trigger one controlled test condition and confirm the alert arrives at the intended mailbox, including the sender, subject, event, and recovery notification if your rule generates one.
- Restore the service and verify that the event clears. Record the exact configuration and test date for the next operator.
No configuration template can prove delivery for your relay, DNS, firewall, or mailbox. The controlled test on your own VPS is the evidence that this installation works.
Path 2: configure Uptime Kuma SMTP notifications
Uptime Kuma is the dashboard-oriented option. Its feature documentation lists HTTP(S), TCP, ping, DNS, Docker, database, and other monitor types, and identifies Email (SMTP) as a notification channel. It is useful when you want one browser interface for monitors, status pages, and notification routing.

1. Deploy and protect the dashboard
Install Uptime Kuma using the release method appropriate for your Linux distribution or container environment. Keep the dashboard behind HTTPS and restrict administrative access with strong credentials and, where available, network controls. The exact deployment commands and interface labels can change between releases, so use the documentation shipped with the version you installed.
2. Create a monitor
- Open the dashboard and choose the control for adding a monitor.
- Select the monitor type that matches the failure you want to detect: HTTP(S) for a website or API, TCP for a listening port, ping for host reachability, DNS for name-resolution behavior, or another supported type such as Docker or a database.
- Enter the target hostname, URL, port, or credentials requested by that monitor type.
- Save the monitor and confirm that it reaches an expected up state before configuring an outage test.
3. Add an Email (SMTP) notification
- Open the notification settings and choose Email (SMTP).
- Enter the relay host and port, then select the encryption mode required by that relay.
- Provide the dedicated SMTP username and password or token.
- Set the sender identity and one or more recipients. Ensure the sender is authorized by the relay and the destination mailbox accepts it.
- Save the notification and use the interface’s test action if the installed release provides one.
Field names and supported encryption choices can change, so compare the form with the release documentation rather than copying an old screenshot. A saved notification is not proof of delivery; confirm receipt in the destination mailbox.
4. Attach the notification to monitors
Assign the SMTP notification to each monitor that should generate an email. Consider separate notification policies for critical production services and low-priority checks. If every monitor sends every state change to the same inbox, a transient DNS or network blip can bury a genuine outage.
5. Decide where the monitor runs
An Uptime Kuma instance on the same VPS can detect a failed application while the operating system remains reachable, but it cannot report an outage that takes down the VPS, its network path, or the dashboard itself. For an independent view, run the monitor from another host or network and target the public endpoint. This distinction is central: local checks explain what failed inside the server; an external check tells you whether users can reach it.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
6. Test both failure and recovery
Use a disposable endpoint or a maintenance window. Stop the test target, wait for the monitor to change state, confirm the email, restore the target, and confirm the recovery message. Check timestamps, target names, and links in the message so an operator can identify the affected service without opening the dashboard first.

Design alerts that remain useful
Separate detection from recovery
A down notification should identify the monitor, target, observed condition, and time. A recovery notification should clearly state that the condition cleared. If the tool allows delays or consecutive-failure thresholds, use them to avoid paging on a single transient probe failure while still meeting the response time your service requires.
Use event filters deliberately
Monit’s global and service-level filters let you allow only selected event classes or exclude noisy ones. Uptime Kuma lets you choose which monitors use a notification. Keep routine state changes out of the primary incident mailbox and route them to a lower-priority destination when they are useful for trend analysis.
Keep an independent alert path
Do not place every component on the same failure domain. If the VPS, its firewall, DNS, monitor, and SMTP relay all depend on one unavailable network path, an email alert may be impossible. A second monitoring location or a separately hosted relay improves visibility, but it still requires its own credentials, testing, and access controls.
Reliability and security checklist
- Use an authenticated SMTP relay with TLS and the port and mode required by the provider.
- Create a dedicated monitoring sender account and limit its permissions and recipients.
- Protect configuration files, queue directories, logs, and backups that may contain credentials or message content.
- Use Monit event allowlists or denylists, and assign Uptime Kuma notifications only to monitors that need them.
- Configure Monit’s persistent event queue when temporary relay outages must not lose events.
- Monitor the alert path itself. Monit can test SMTP; Uptime Kuma can monitor TCP or HTTP endpoints. A test alert should be part of deployment and periodic operations.
- Rotate SMTP credentials under the relay provider’s current policy and update every dependent monitor at the same time.
- Review mailbox spam, quarantine, forwarding, and sender-authentication policies when messages appear to send successfully but do not reach the inbox.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No message and no obvious error | The monitor never entered the event state, or the notification is not attached | Inspect monitor status, event filters, recipient assignment, and the controlled failure test. |
| TLS handshake or certificate error | Encryption mode, port, hostname, or certificate validation does not match the relay | Compare the relay’s current SSL/TLS requirement with set mailserver or the Uptime Kuma form; use the relay hostname covered by its certificate. |
| Authentication rejected | Wrong credential, disabled SMTP submission, or sender policy violation | Check the dedicated account, token or password, permitted sender, and provider security policy without exposing the secret in logs. |
| Alerts arrive only after an outage ends | The relay was temporarily unavailable and events were not queued | For Monit, verify the event queue directory and retry behavior. For Uptime Kuma, inspect the installed release’s notification behavior and its logs. |
| Too many emails | Every state transition or low-value event is routed to the primary mailbox | Use Monit filters, reduce notification assignments, and separate critical alerts from informational changes. |
| Dashboard reports up while users report down | The monitor shares the same VPS or network failure domain as the service | Place an endpoint monitor outside the VPS and compare its result with local process and port checks. |
| Credentials exposed in a backup | Configuration and queue files were copied without secret handling | Restrict file permissions, remove unauthorized copies, rotate the credential, and review who can read the backup. |
A practical rollout sequence
- Choose Monit for local supervision, Uptime Kuma for dashboard and endpoint coverage, or both for complementary views.
- Create the dedicated SMTP sender and collect the relay’s current host, port, TLS mode, and authentication requirements.
- Configure one low-risk test monitor before adding production services.
- Send a test message, trigger a controlled failure, and verify both outage and recovery delivery.
- Add only the checks and recipients that have a defined response owner.
- Enable Monit’s event queue when delayed delivery must be retried, and document the queue path and permissions.
- Run periodic alert-path tests, especially after changing SMTP credentials, firewall rules, DNS, monitoring versions, or mailbox policies.
Bottom line
For a compact, local Linux VPS watchdog, Monit offers direct SMTP configuration, granular event filters, multiple mail-server support, and a persistent event queue. For a browser-managed system covering websites, ports, DNS, ping, containers, databases, and status pages, Uptime Kuma provides broader monitor types and Email (SMTP) notifications. Whichever path you choose, authenticated TLS, protected credentials, noise filtering, an independent vantage point where needed, and a real end-to-end test determine whether an email alert is dependable rather than merely configured.
