Use Gmail’s SMTP server with PHPMailer, an app password (the simplest password-based method), or OAuth2. The correct server is smtp.gmail.com: port 465 uses implicit TLS, while port 587 uses STARTTLS. Authenticate with the complete Gmail address, keep credentials outside your PHP source, and use the Gmail account or a configured alias in setFrom().
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What you need before writing PHP code
Prepare these items before configuring PHPMailer:
- A PHP application running on a server that can make outbound SMTP connections.
- Composer, so PHPMailer and its dependencies are installed consistently.
- A Gmail or Google Workspace mailbox that is allowed to send through Gmail SMTP.
- Either a Google app password or an OAuth2 client and refresh-token workflow.
- The complete Gmail address you will use for SMTP authentication.
Install PHPMailer from your project directory with Composer:

composer require phpmailer/phpmailer
Composer creates vendor/autoload.php. Load that file in the script that sends mail. Do not copy PHPMailer classes manually into a web directory when Composer can manage updates and dependencies. If you later enable XOAUTH2, install the additional OAuth client packages and PHPMailer support files required by its maintained Gmail example rather than assuming the base package alone is sufficient.
Gmail SMTP settings PHPMailer expects
| Setting | Port 465 | Port 587 |
|---|---|---|
| SMTP host | smtp.gmail.com |
smtp.gmail.com |
| Encryption | Implicit TLS (SMTPS) | Explicit STARTTLS |
| PHPMailer value | PHPMailer::ENCRYPTION_SMTPS |
PHPMailer::ENCRYPTION_STARTTLS |
| Authentication | Required | Required |
| Username | Complete Gmail address | Complete Gmail address |
Port 465 establishes TLS before SMTP commands are exchanged. Port 587 starts with an ordinary SMTP connection and upgrades it with the STARTTLS command. The encryption constant must match the port; mixing the two is a common cause of connection failures. Which port works through a particular hosting provider depends on its firewall and outbound-mail policy.

These are the values shown in PHPMailer’s maintained Gmail example and Google Workspace Admin Help. There is no separate Gmail SMTP hostname for a custom domain hosted in Workspace: authenticate with the complete mailbox address while still connecting to smtp.gmail.com. A network that blocks one outbound port may still allow the other, but changing the port without changing the encryption mode produces a different protocol mismatch rather than a fix.
Fastest working setup: an app password
An app password is a separate 16-digit passcode for applications that cannot use Google’s normal “Sign in with Google” flow. It is not the same as the account’s regular Gmail password. Google requires 2-Step Verification before an app password can be created.
Create the credential
- Sign in to the Google Account that will send the messages.
- Open the account’s Security settings and enable 2-Step Verification if it is not already enabled.
- Open the App passwords area, create a password for the mail application, and copy the 16-digit value when Google displays it. It may be shown once, so store it immediately in a password manager or deployment secret store.
- Put that value in the environment variable used by your PHP process. Remove spaces only if the value supplied by Google includes display spacing; the actual credential is the 16-digit passcode.
App-password availability can be hidden or blocked by a work or school administrator, Advanced Protection, or an organization’s account policy. Google also revokes app passwords when the main Google Account password changes, so a password reset requires you to issue and deploy a new app password. A newly created passcode belongs to one Google account; it will not authenticate a different address accidentally left in Username.
Google Account Help describes an app password as a 16-digit passcode that grants an app or device access when the normal Google sign-in flow is unavailable. It is therefore a credential for this integration, not a way to bypass 2-Step Verification. If the App passwords option is absent, repeatedly retrying the normal account password will not solve the policy restriction; ask the Workspace administrator or move to an approved OAuth2 flow.
Minimal PHPMailer example
The following example uses port 465 and implicit TLS. Replace the address, recipient, and environment variable with your own values:
<?php
use PHPMailerPHPMailerPHPMailer;
use PHPMailerPHPMailerSMTP;
require __DIR__ . '/vendor/autoload.php';
$mail = new PHPMailer(true);
$mail->isSMTP();
$mail->Host = 'smtp.gmail.com';
$mail->SMTPAuth = true;
$mail->Username = '[email protected]';
$mail->Password = getenv('GMAIL_APP_PASSWORD');
$mail->Port = 465;
$mail->SMTPSecure = PHPMailer::ENCRYPTION_SMTPS;
$mail->setFrom('[email protected]', 'Your Name');
$mail->addAddress('[email protected]');
$mail->Subject = 'Test message';
$mail->Body = 'Hello from PHPMailer';
$mail->send();
new PHPMailer(true) enables exceptions, allowing a failed send to be caught by your application’s error handling. In production, catch the exception and log a safe diagnostic message; never log the app password, OAuth refresh token, or full SMTP conversation. Keep the environment variable available to the PHP process itself; a value present in a developer shell but absent from the web server’s service configuration will appear to PHPMailer as an empty password.

$mail->Port = 587;
$mail->SMTPSecure = PHPMailer::ENCRYPTION_STARTTLS;
Keep isSMTP(), SMTPAuth, the host, and the complete username unchanged. Port 587 is not a less-secure alternative when STARTTLS succeeds; it negotiates TLS before authentication and message submission. Conversely, selecting ENCRYPTION_STARTTLS on 465 or ENCRYPTION_SMTPS on 587 asks the server for the wrong handshake.
Choosing between app passwords and OAuth2
| Consideration | App password | OAuth2/XOAUTH2 |
|---|---|---|
| How it authenticates | A 16-digit Google-generated passcode supplied as the SMTP password. | Access and refresh tokens issued after Google consent. |
| Setup effort | Low: enable 2-Step Verification, create a passcode, and place it in a secret. | Higher: create OAuth credentials, configure consent and redirect details, obtain consent, and maintain token refresh. |
| Policy compatibility | Unavailable when an administrator, Advanced Protection, or account policy disallows app passwords. | Suitable when app passwords are unavailable, provided the organization permits the OAuth application and requested scopes. |
| Secret lifecycle | Revoked when the main Google Account password changes; replace it in every deployment. | Refresh tokens and client secrets remain production credentials and must be stored, rotated, and revoked safely. |
| Best fit | A small script or controlled mailbox where a simple non-interactive credential is permitted. | A managed application that can preserve refresh-token consent and needs token-based authorization. |
Gmail SMTP supports industry-standard OAuth 2.0. PHPMailer’s maintained Gmail XOAUTH2 example sets $mail->AuthType = 'XOAUTH2' and uses a token provider with the League OAuth2 client integration. The XOAUTH2 path requires PHPMailer’s relevant OAuth support files and Composer dependencies in addition to the base package.
Choose the app-password route when a single mailbox is permitted to use a non-interactive passcode and you want the shortest setup. Choose OAuth2 when an administrator blocks app passwords, when Advanced Protection or organizational policy requires token authorization, or when the application already has a secure consent and refresh-token service. OAuth2 is not automatically simpler: it shifts the operational work from one passcode to consent records, client credentials, refresh-token storage, and token renewal.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOAuth2 implementation outline
- Create an OAuth client in the Google project used by the application and configure the consent screen and redirect URI required by your authorization flow.
- Request only the scope needed to send mail. Ask the account owner to consent while signed in to the Gmail account that will send messages.
- Exchange the authorization result for an access token and refresh token. Store the refresh token and client secret in a protected secret store, not in a public repository or browser-accessible configuration file.
- Build the PHPMailer OAuth token provider using the League client and PHPMailer’s XOAUTH2 support, then set
AuthTypetoXOAUTH2. - Refresh the access token when it expires and verify that the server clock is accurate. OAuth signature and token validity checks are sensitive to incorrect time.
OAuth2 is not a drop-in replacement for the app-password string: PHPMailer must receive a token provider that can return a valid access token for the authenticated mailbox. Keep the redirect configuration, consent account, and SMTP username aligned. Authorizing one mailbox and then setting a different mailbox as Username can result in an authentication failure even when the token itself is valid.
Set the sender and reply address safely
Use the authenticated Gmail address in setFrom(), or an alias that has already been configured and verified in Gmail. Gmail can reject or rewrite an arbitrary From address that is not authorized for the account.
Never put a visitor’s submitted address in setFrom(). That pattern enables spoofing and can trigger Gmail’s anti-abuse checks. Put the visitor’s address in addReplyTo() instead:
$mail->setFrom('[email protected]', 'Your Name');
$mail->addReplyTo($visitorEmail, $visitorName);
$mail->addAddress('[email protected]');
Validate and normalize submitted addresses before calling addReplyTo(). Keep the account address and the recipient address separate so a form cannot alter the SMTP identity. If you use a Workspace alias, verify it in Gmail first and test that account’s permission before putting the alias in production code. A successful connection does not authorize every possible From address.

Protect credentials and the mail endpoint
- Read the app password with
getenv()or your deployment platform’s secret mechanism. Do not commit it to Git, place it in a downloadable.envfile, or embed it in client-side JavaScript. - Restrict access to the process user and deployment administrators. Treat OAuth client secrets and refresh tokens as equally sensitive.
- Use HTTPS for any form that collects message data, apply server-side validation, and rate-limit public send endpoints.
- Do not echo exception details to visitors. SMTP debug output can expose addresses, server responses, and authentication flow information.
- Rotate or revoke credentials when a server, repository, staff account, or deployment artifact may have exposed them.
Deploy the secret separately from the application release so changing an app password after a Google password reset does not require editing source code. Review logs and build artifacts for accidental exposure, especially when debug mode or deployment diagnostics have been enabled. Public forms also need abuse controls: a correctly authenticated SMTP account can still be misused if visitors can submit unlimited requests.
Testing the first message
- Send to an address you control before enabling a public contact form.
- Confirm that the script reaches the SMTP host and completes authentication before investigating message content.
- Check the recipient’s spam folder and Gmail’s sent-mail folder. A successful SMTP submission means Gmail accepted the message for processing; it does not guarantee inbox placement.
- Test both the normal message path and your exception path. A timeout, rejected credential, or invalid recipient should produce a controlled application response and a server-side diagnostic.
During diagnosis, enable server-level SMTP logging temporarily:
$mail->SMTPDebug = SMTP::DEBUG_SERVER;
Disable it after the test:
$mail->SMTPDebug = SMTP::DEBUG_OFF;
Never leave verbose SMTP logging enabled on a production endpoint, because logs can contain message metadata and protocol details. Test the same deployment environment that will send real mail: DNS, firewall rules, PHP extensions, environment variables, and the server clock can differ from a local workstation.
Troubleshooting Gmail and PHPMailer failures
“Connection timed out” or “Could not connect to SMTP host”
- Verify DNS resolution for
smtp.gmail.comfrom the application server. - Check outbound firewall rules and hosting-provider restrictions for ports 465 and 587.
- Try the other supported port with its matching encryption mode: 465 with
ENCRYPTION_SMTPS, or 587 withENCRYPTION_STARTTLS. - Confirm that a local security product is not intercepting or blocking TLS connections.
Do not change credentials while the server cannot open a TCP/TLS connection; authentication is not reached in that situation. Once connectivity works, turn to the account and token checks below.
535 authentication errors
A 535 response commonly means Gmail rejected the username or password. Use the complete address, such as [email protected], rather than only the part before the at sign. If you selected password authentication, use a newly generated app password—not the ordinary Google Account password. Confirm that 2-Step Verification is enabled and that the app password belongs to the same account named in Username.
534 or a message saying an application-specific password is required
Generate an app password and replace the value in the deployment secret. If the account is managed, ask the administrator whether app passwords are permitted. Advanced Protection and organization policy can prevent this method entirely; in that case, use an approved OAuth2 application.
504 or unsupported authentication type
A 504 response can indicate that the server and client disagree about the authentication mechanism. Check that a password configuration is not combined with an XOAUTH2 setting, or vice versa. For OAuth2, set AuthType to XOAUTH2 and ensure the token provider and OAuth dependencies are installed. For an app password, leave the normal SMTP authentication flow in place and supply the app password as Password.

TLS or certificate errors
Match the encryption constant to the selected port and ensure the server’s system clock is correct. An incorrect clock can invalidate TLS certificates and OAuth tokens. Update the operating system’s certificate bundle rather than disabling certificate verification.

Check the service or process configuration that launches PHP, not only the shell where Composer was run. Gmail Workspace limits and relay decisions
Google Workspace Admin Help documents Gmail SMTP at smtp.gmail.com, with SSL on port 465 and TLS on port 587. It lists authentication with the complete account email and an app password where applicable. The same guidance documents a 2,000-message-per-day sending limit for the Gmail SMTP option. That figure is an operational Workspace limit, not a promise of a particular delivery rate, and organizations should verify current policies before launch.
| Approach | Administration | Sender control | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Gmail SMTP | Each mailbox or application manages its permitted credential. | Messages are submitted as the authenticated account or an authorized alias. | A low-volume application with one or a few approved senders. |
| Workspace SMTP relay | Administrators define relay rules, trusted sources, and organizational policy. | Centralized controls can cover multiple applications and senders. | A managed deployment with several senders, centralized governance, or volume needs that make per-mailbox credentials impractical. |
Organizations approaching the documented daily limit, operating many applications, or requiring centralized sender policy should evaluate Workspace SMTP relay and Google’s current sending policies with their administrator before production use. Relay is an administration choice, not merely a different PHPMailer port: the organization defines trusted sources and sender policy centrally, while direct Gmail SMTP ties authentication to an individual mailbox or approved alias.

Why does Gmail reject my PHPMailer username and password?
Use the complete Gmail address as Username, verify that the app password belongs to that account, and confirm that 2-Step Verification and account policy permit app passwords. A 535 response commonly indicates rejected credentials.
When should I use OAuth2 instead of an app password?
Use OAuth2 when an administrator, Advanced Protection, or account policy blocks app passwords, or when your application can securely maintain consent, client credentials, and refresh tokens.
Can a visitor’s email address be the From address?
No. Set From to the authenticated Gmail mailbox or an authorized alias. Validate the visitor’s address and place it in addReplyTo().
Should I use port 465 or 587?
Either is supported. Use 465 with implicit SMTPS or 587 with STARTTLS, and choose the port allowed by your hosting network’s outbound firewall.
What does a 504 authentication error mean?
It can indicate an unsupported or mismatched authentication type. Keep app-password settings separate from XOAUTH2, set AuthType to XOAUTH2 for OAuth, and install its required dependencies.
What is Gmail Workspace’s SMTP sending limit?
Google Workspace Admin Help documents a 2,000-message-per-day limit for the Gmail SMTP option. Organizations with higher volume or centralized governance should evaluate Workspace SMTP relay and current Google policies.
