To send WordPress email with SendGrid, install the official SendGrid WordPress plugin, connect it with either a SendGrid API key or SendGrid SMTP credentials, authenticate the sender domain, and send a test message before trusting it with password resets, contact forms, or store notifications. API mode is usually the simpler choice when the integration supports it; SMTP is useful when an existing mail stack specifically requires SMTP fields.

How WordPress email reaches SendGrid
WordPress normally hands outgoing messages to its wp_mail() function. A plugin can replace that delivery path and pass the message to an external provider. The official SendGrid WordPress plugin replaces WordPress’s default wp_mail() path and supports either an API or SMTP connection to SendGrid.

SendGrid becomes the authenticated relay that accepts it and attempts delivery to the recipient’s mail server.
A successful API response or SMTP hand-off means SendGrid accepted the message. It does not guarantee inbox placement. Sender authentication, From-address alignment, the receiving mailbox’s filtering, message content, and the recipient’s mail system still influence whether the message reaches the inbox or spam folder.

What you need before configuring the plugin
- A WordPress site where you can install and activate plugins.
- A SendGrid account with permission to create an API key and configure sender authentication.
- A sender email address on a domain you control, or access to the address-validation process for a single sender.
- Access to the domain’s DNS records if you will use domain authentication.
- A mailbox you control for testing.
- If using SMTP, an outbound connection that can reach
smtp.sendgrid.neton a supported port.
Decide which sender address and display name the site should use before testing. Changing the From identity later can trigger sender-verification failures or make messages appear inconsistent to recipients.
API or SMTP: which SendGrid connection should you use?
Both modes route WordPress mail through SendGrid, but they authenticate and fail in different ways. Choose the mode your WordPress integration supports best rather than enabling both casually.

API mode avoids SMTP connection details and is generally the shortest setup when the plugin’s API integration works on your site. SMTP can be easier to fit into an established mail configuration, but it adds more points to check: transport security, port availability, and the required literal username.

Install and activate the SendGrid WordPress plugin
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins and select Add New.
- Search for SendGrid Plugin.
- Select Install Now, then select Activate.
- Open the plugin’s settings and choose whether to configure API or SMTP delivery.
The plugin documentation warns that another plugin declaring wp_mail() can prevent the SendGrid plugin from working. If the settings appear correct but messages continue to use another provider or fail before reaching SendGrid, temporarily identify mail-related plugins and check for a competing mail implementation.
Create a SendGrid API key with limited permissions
- Create or sign in to your SendGrid account.
- Open the account area used to create API keys.
- Create a key for this WordPress site and grant only the permissions required by the integration. The key must include permission to send mail, commonly shown as the Mail Send scope.
- Copy the key when it is displayed and store it in a protected password manager or server configuration. Treat it as a password; do not paste it into a public repository, theme file, screenshot, support ticket, or client-side script.
- If a key is exposed, revoke it and create a replacement with the narrowest useful scope.
Scoped and revocable keys limit the damage from a mistake. A key that only sends mail for the site is safer than a broadly privileged account credential, and replacing a compromised key is safer than leaving it active while investigating.
Authenticate the sender domain or address
SendGrid must be able to associate the From identity with an authorized sender. Domain authentication is the preferred arrangement for a site you control: it verifies domain ownership, permission to send, sender identity, and message integrity.

- In SendGrid, start the domain-authentication setup for the domain used in the WordPress From address.
- Enter the domain requested by the setup and copy the DNS records SendGrid supplies.
- Publish those records at the DNS provider that hosts the domain’s authoritative zone. Do not alter the record names or values; paste them exactly as supplied.
- Return to SendGrid and run its verification check after the DNS changes have propagated.
- Use a From address on the authenticated domain in the WordPress plugin.
If domain authentication is not available, complete SendGrid’s single-sender verification for the specific address instead. A From address that has not passed the applicable verification will commonly be rejected or produce a sender error even when the API key is valid.
Authentication does not force every recipient to place a message in the inbox. It establishes that the site is authorized to send with the identity it presents; recipient-side filtering remains independent.
Configure API delivery in WordPress
- Open the SendGrid plugin settings and select its API integration.
- Paste the SendGrid API key into the key field. Avoid adding spaces, quotation marks, or line breaks.
- Enter the display name and email address that WordPress should use for the From identity. Use the verified address or an address on the authenticated domain.
- Save the settings.
- Use the plugin’s test-email form to send a message to a mailbox you control.
The legacy plugin documentation also describes constants that can be defined in wp-config.php: SENDGRID_API_KEY, SENDGRID_FROM_NAME, and SENDGRID_FROM_EMAIL. If you use this approach, keep the configuration file outside public version control and protect server access. The exact constant support depends on the plugin version you installed, so treat the installed version’s documentation and settings as authoritative.

Configure SMTP delivery when API mode is not suitable

SendGrid’s SMTP documentation specifically says to set the username to the string apikey. Entering the API key in the username field is a frequent cause of authentication failure. The legacy WordPress plugin documentation identifies Swift Mailer as required for its SMTP path; if that dependency is absent, the SMTP option may not function even when the credentials are correct.
Send and inspect a real test email
Do not wait for a customer form submission or a password-reset request to discover a configuration problem. After saving valid credentials, use the plugin’s test-email form and work through the following checks:

- Send to a mailbox you control, preferably at a different mail provider from the WordPress host.
- Confirm that the message arrives, then check the spam or junk folder if it is not in the inbox.
- Inspect the visible From name and address. Confirm that they match the verified identity configured in SendGrid.
- Check the Reply-To address, because replies may go somewhere different from the From address.
- Confirm that the subject and body are intact and that links or HTML have not been altered unexpectedly.
- Review the WordPress plugin’s error output and SendGrid’s event or error information if the message is rejected, delayed, or missing.
Repeat the test from each important feature: account registration, password reset, contact forms, ecommerce receipts, and administrator alerts. A successful plugin test proves that the test path works; it does not prove that every plugin on the site uses the same mail path or headers.
Troubleshoot the most common failures
Authentication failure in API mode
- Generate or replace the API key and verify that its permissions include Mail Send.
- Remove accidental spaces, quotation marks, or truncated characters when copying the key.
- Confirm that the plugin is actually set to API mode and that another mail plugin is not intercepting
wp_mail(). - Check the plugin and SendGrid error output for an HTTP status or permission message before changing unrelated settings.
Authentication failure in SMTP mode
- Set the username to the literal value
apikey. - Use the API key as the password; do not use the SendGrid account password.
- Confirm that the key includes Mail Send permission and has not been revoked.
- Check the host, selected port, TLS setting, and any required Swift Mailer dependency.
Sender rejected or reported as unverified
- Complete single-sender verification or domain authentication in SendGrid.
- Publish every DNS record exactly as SendGrid supplied it, then rerun verification.
- Make the WordPress From address match the verified address or authenticated domain.
- Check alignment when a plugin lets you override From or Reply-To values.
SMTP connection times out
- Confirm that the server can make outbound connections to
smtp.sendgrid.net. - Try port
587, then2525if the host blocks the first choice. - Ask the hosting provider whether outbound SMTP is restricted. A local firewall or hosting policy can block the connection before SendGrid receives anything.
- Do not treat a timeout as an API-key problem until basic network connectivity has been checked.
The plugin says it is configured, but another mail path is used
Look for another plugin or custom component that declares wp_mail(). The official plugin documentation calls this conflict out explicitly. Disable one mail implementation at a time in a staging environment, then retest so that you know which component owns the delivery path.

Messages arrive in spam
- Verify domain authentication and make the From address align with the authenticated identity.
- Check the recipient mailbox’s filtering, quarantine, and allow-list policies.
- Compare the headers of an inbox message with a spam message to identify receiving-side differences.
- Review SendGrid event information for blocks, bounces, or deferrals.
Neither a successful API response nor a successful SMTP hand-off is an inbox-placement guarantee. Avoid promising recipients a delivery result that the sending site cannot control.
An API key was exposed
- Revoke the exposed key in SendGrid immediately.
- Create a replacement with only the permissions this WordPress integration needs.
- Update the plugin or protected server configuration with the replacement.
- Review recent sending activity and investigate any unexpected messages.
- Remove the old key from repositories, logs, screenshots, backups, and shared documentation where possible.
Keep the production setup reliable
- Store API keys in protected server configuration or the plugin’s secured credential storage rather than theme files or public code.
- Limit access to WordPress administrators who need to change mail settings.
- Document the verified From identity, authenticated domain, selected mode, SMTP port if applicable, and the date of the last successful test.
- Retest after changing the domain’s DNS, the hosting provider, the mail plugin, or the WordPress version.
- Monitor failed, bounced, blocked, or deferred messages in SendGrid and investigate patterns rather than treating each missing email as an isolated WordPress bug.
- Keep a recovery procedure: revoke a compromised key, issue a limited replacement, restore the verified sender settings, and send a controlled test.
Which mode is the practical choice?
Choose API mode when the SendGrid plugin can make its API request successfully and you want fewer transport settings to maintain. It reduces the SMTP-specific failure surface to the key, sender verification, and API response handling.
Choose SMTP mode when another component requires an SMTP relay or your existing mail architecture is built around SMTP fields. Record the host, port, TLS choice, and the exact apikey username so future administrators do not substitute the key in the wrong field.
In either mode, sender authentication and a controlled test are mandatory. The connection method decides how WordPress hands mail to SendGrid; it does not replace domain verification, credential protection, or recipient-side deliverability checks.
