Set the player password in the dedicated server’s XML configuration by changing the existing ServerPassword property, then restart the server with that same configuration file. Edit only the text inside value="..."; changing the property name or XML structure can prevent the server from starting. A blank value leaves the server open to players, while TelnetPassword is a separate credential for remote administration.

What the server password controls
ServerPassword is the credential a player must provide to join your 7 Days to Die dedicated server. It is stored in the XML file read when the dedicated-server process starts. The setting does not change your Steam account password, a character password, or the password used by a remote administration console.

The current configuration reference identifies this property as the password required for entry. Current setup guidance treats an empty value as the public-server setting. In practical terms, these two entries produce different access policies:

The exact surrounding settings can differ between game builds. Always work from the serverconfig.xml shipped with the dedicated-server version you installed instead of copying a property layout from an unrelated release.

Before you edit the configuration
Stop the running server
Stop the dedicated server cleanly before editing its configuration. If you cannot stop it immediately, schedule a restart after saving the change. A running process normally keeps using the values loaded at startup, so editing a file while the server remains online will not reliably apply the new password.
Identify the file the process actually reads
Dedicated-server installations can contain the original serverconfig.xml plus one or more custom copies. The important file is not necessarily the one with the most familiar name; it is the file selected by the launch command. Check the script or shortcut used to start the server and note whether it includes a -configfile=... argument.
Using a custom copy is safer for a long-running server. The dedicated-server setup guidance recommends keeping your own configuration and launching with -configfile=..., because game updates can replace or rewrite files shipped with the installation. Make a backup of the file before changing it, and record its path so future restarts use the same copy.
Use the configuration from your installed build
Property names and defaults may vary by 7 Days to Die build. Do not create a new XML file from memory or paste an old example over the current file. Open the configuration that came with your installed dedicated server and locate the existing password property there.

Step-by-step: set the player password
- Stop the dedicated server. Close the server process through the method you normally use, or plan a controlled restart after the edit.
- Open the dedicated-server folder. Find the XML configuration shipped with your installed build. If you maintain a custom copy, open that copy instead.
- Search for the property. Use your editor’s search function for
ServerPassword. The line normally appears in this form:
<property name="ServerPassword" value=""/>- Replace only the value. Put your chosen password between the quotation marks after
value=:
<property name="ServerPassword" value="ChooseAUniquePassword"/>- Preserve the XML syntax. Keep the property name, quotation marks, angle brackets, slash, and placement intact. The official server documentation’s instruction is: “Only change the data in the “value=” part of the file, otherwise, it will not work.”
- Save the file. Save it as XML rather than as a text file with an added extension such as
.xml.txt. Do not let a word processor reformat the file. - Start or restart with the same file selected. Launch the server through the script or shortcut that points to the file you edited. If you changed a custom file but started the default configuration, the server will continue using the old value.
- Test from a game client. Join the server and enter the password when prompted. Test with a permitted player account rather than assuming that a successful server launch proves the access rule is active.
Choosing and storing the password
The documentation establishes where the password is configured, not a universal character limit or an official complexity formula. Use a password that is unique to this server and difficult for people outside your group to guess. Do not reuse an administrator, email, hosting-panel, or personal account password.
- Share it through a private channel with the people who should join.
- Keep a secure record so you can recover it if the server is restarted months later.
- Change it when a former player should no longer have access.
- Avoid putting the password in public server listings, screenshots, stream overlays, or an unprotected launch script.
- When changing it, tell current players that a restart is required and provide the new value through the same private channel.
The password protects entry to the game server; it is not a substitute for operating-system permissions, firewall rules, backups, or protection of the machine on which the server runs.

Windows
Windows installations commonly use startdedicated.bat or a shortcut that calls it. Open the batch file or its shortcut properties and confirm that the command references the XML you edited. If it contains a custom argument such as -configfile=myserver.xml, that named file is the one that must contain the new ServerPassword value.
After saving the XML, stop any existing server window and run the batch file again. Starting a second instance while the first is still running can create a misleading test: you may be joining the old process, not the newly configured one.

Linux
Linux installations commonly use a shell launch script, service definition, or another wrapper around the dedicated-server executable. Inspect the command used by that launcher for its configuration-file argument. Edit that target file, restart the service or script, and verify that the restarted process is the one accepting your test connection.
The operating system changes the launcher syntax, but not the requirement: the running process must read the XML file in which you changed ServerPassword.

ServerPassword and TelnetPassword are different
Confusing these properties is a common source of both failed joins and exposed administration interfaces.

Setting TelnetPassword does not make players enter that password at the join screen. Conversely, a strong ServerPassword does not secure remote administration. Use separate credentials and do not publish the telnet credential to ordinary players. If remote administration is exposed and unnecessary, disabling that interface removes an access path rather than merely adding another password.

How to verify that the change worked
- Confirm the server was stopped before the edit or restarted afterward.
- Confirm the launch script, service, or shortcut points to the exact XML file you changed.
- Check that the file contains one current
ServerPasswordproperty with the intended value. - Start the server and wait until it has finished loading.
- From a client, select the server and attempt to join without entering a password. A protected server should request the credential or reject the attempt rather than allow anonymous entry.
- Enter the current password exactly as saved, including capitalization and any punctuation you chose.
- If you have access to a second permitted player, ask that person to test independently. This distinguishes a client-side saved-password issue from a server configuration issue.
The available documentation describes the configuration and launch workflow; it does not report an independent hands-on test session. Treat your own join attempt as the final confirmation for your particular build, launcher, and network setup.
Troubleshooting a password that does not work
The server still lets everyone in
- Open the launch script or service definition and identify the active configuration file.
- Compare that path with the file you edited. A second copy of
serverconfig.xmlis often the explanation. - Confirm the active file contains a non-empty
ServerPasswordvalue. - Stop and restart the correct process. Merely saving the XML does not reload values in an already running server.
The server will not start after the edit
- Restore the backup you made before editing if the server stopped launching immediately.
- Compare the line with the original property and change only the text inside
value="...". - Check that every quotation mark and angle bracket remains present and that the property still ends with
/>when that is how it appeared in your build. - Remove accidental formatting from a word processor and resave as plain XML.
The official documentation warns that changing anything other than the data in the value= part can make the file fail. Do not rename ServerPassword, add a second homemade property, or move XML tags while troubleshooting.

Players receive a password error
- Ask them to use the current password, not one saved from before the last change.
- Check capitalization, spaces, and punctuation exactly as entered in the XML value.
- Verify that the server completed its restart after the password was changed.
- Have one player re-enter the password manually rather than relying on an old client-side saved credential.
Remote administration is still exposed
Review TelnetPassword separately. Set a strong, different value for the remote interface, or disable that interface when it is not needed. Changing only ServerPassword addresses player access and does not close an administrative endpoint.
Keeping the setting after game updates
Updates are a reason to use a custom configuration copy rather than repeatedly editing the vendor-supplied default. Keep the custom file in a location covered by your normal backup routine, and keep the launch command pointed at it with -configfile=.... After an update, compare the new shipped configuration with your custom copy for newly introduced settings, but do not replace the entire custom file blindly: doing so can erase your password and other server choices.

Before applying an update, make a dated backup of the working XML. After the update, verify three things before inviting players back: the launcher still references the custom file, the ServerPassword value is present, and the server can be restarted without XML errors.
Changing or removing the password
Change it
Stop the server, replace only the text inside the existing ServerPassword value, save the XML, and restart with the same configuration-file argument. Every player must use the new value after the restart; the previous password should no longer grant entry.

Stop the server and set the property back to an empty value:
<property name="ServerPassword" value=""/>Save, restart, and verify the access policy from a client. Leaving the value blank is the setting described by current setup guidance for an open/public server. Removing the player password does not remove or alter a separate TelnetPassword.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting for password control
The password edit itself is the same access-policy decision, but the work around it differs depending on where the server runs. A managed host may expose the XML through a control panel or apply changes during a restart; a self-hosted installation gives you direct file and launch-script control. Confirm the host’s exact workflow before assuming that editing a local copy changes the live server.
