To change the name and public listing text of a Vintage Story server, edit the server data directory’s serverconfig.json. Set the ServerName and ServerDescription string values, save the file, and restart the server. An administrator can also change both values with /serverconfig commands.

What players see in the server browser
Vintage Story uses two separate configuration values for the public listing. ServerName is the short title players scan in the server browser. ServerDescription is the longer text that explains what the server offers before somebody joins.

"ServerDescription": nullThe default name is therefore generic, while a null description means no listing description has been supplied. Changing these keys affects the information shown to prospective players; it does not change the save name, world seed, welcome message, or gameplay rules by itself.

What you need before changing the settings
- Dedicated-server file access: You need permission to open the server’s data directory and edit its configuration file.
- Administrator command access: For the command method, you must be able to use the server console or an in-game account with the required administrative permissions.
- A safe edit window: Stop the server before changing the file, or ensure no process is writing to it. A restart is needed for a file edit to be loaded reliably.
- A backup: Make a copy of
serverconfig.jsonbefore editing. This gives you a quick recovery path if a comma, quote, or other JSON character is accidentally changed.
The exact folder varies with how the server was installed and which operating system or hosting arrangement is being used. Open the server data directory, not an unrelated client configuration folder, and look for the file named exactly serverconfig.json.
Change the name and description in serverconfig.json
- Stop the server. Use the normal stop command or hosting-panel control, then wait until the process has fully exited.
- Open the server data directory. Find the generated
serverconfig.jsonfile. If several Vintage Story installations exist, verify that you are editing the directory for the world and server instance you actually publish. - Make a backup copy. Copy the file to a separate location or give the copy a distinct name before making changes.
- Open the file as plain text. Use an editor that preserves UTF-8 text and does not automatically reformat or replace quotation marks with typographic “smart” quotes.
- Find the two keys. Search for
ServerNameandServerDescription. Do not rename the keys; only replace the values after the colon. - Enter JSON strings. Put each value inside straight double quotes. For example:

"ServerDescription": "A relaxed survival server for friends.<br>New players welcome."- Keep the surrounding JSON valid. Preserve commas between properties, keep the opening and closing quotation marks balanced, and escape any quotation mark that should appear inside a value.
- Save the file. Do not leave the editor’s temporary or backup filename in place of the actual
serverconfig.json. - Start the server again. The server reads the edited values during startup.
- Check the public listing. Confirm that the new name and description appear as intended. If the old text remains, work through the troubleshooting section rather than repeatedly overwriting the file.
How ServerName and ServerDescription differ
ServerName
ServerName is the server’s name in the public listing. The official configuration reference uses Vintage Story Server as its default example. Treat this as the compact identifier: make it distinctive enough to find, while keeping the community, region, or play style clear at a glance.

ServerDescription is the longer listing text. The official reference states that it can be longer than the name and supports VTML, including <br> for a line break. Use it for information a player needs before connecting, such as rules, time zone, player-versus-environment focus, reset policy, mod expectations, or a short welcome.
WelcomeMessage is different
WelcomeMessage controls a message shown when a player joins. It is not the public browser description. The multiplayer guide refers to the join message as motd when it is set through /serverconfig. Changing the listing description will not replace the message players receive after they connect.
Change the values from the console or chat
If you have administrator access, the official multiplayer setup guide documents runtime commands that avoid direct JSON editing. Enter the command in the server console or in chat with the permissions required to run server configuration commands.

Set the public name
/serverconfig name Peaceful PvE ServerThis sets the name visible in the public server listing. Spaces after name are part of the new value, so type the complete name on one line.

/serverconfig description This is a medieval survival server, PvE only, everyone welcome! <3This sets the listing description. The command accepts the text that follows description; include your intended punctuation and spacing. If you need a line break or other VTML formatting, use the supported markup in the value rather than pressing Enter in the middle of a command.
When the command method is preferable
- Use it for a quick change while the server is running and you already have console or in-game administrative access.
- Use file editing when you are preparing several settings together, applying a saved configuration, or need precise control over JSON and VTML.
- If a command is rejected, check your permission level and console syntax before editing unrelated settings. The command route does not remove the need for administrative access.

Write a name players can actually find
A good listing name answers the first scanning question: “What kind of server is this?” Use a short community name followed by a meaningful qualifier when appropriate.
- Community identity: “Ashen Valley Cooperative” tells players this is a named group rather than an unnamed test instance.
- Play style: Add terms such as “Peaceful PvE” when that distinction matters to your audience.
- Region or schedule: A time-zone or region label can help players judge whether the server’s active hours fit them.
- Searchability: Avoid a string made entirely of symbols, repeated punctuation, or inside jokes that new players cannot interpret.
Keep detailed rules and feature lists in ServerDescription. The name is a label, not a place to put every condition of entry.
Write a useful public description
Prospective players should be able to decide whether the server suits them without joining first. A compact description can state the essentials in a predictable order:

- Play mode: Identify cooperative, PvE, role-play, challenge, or another defining style.
- Audience: Say whether the server is for friends, open to new players, or restricted to a particular community.
- Rules that affect the decision to join: Mention major conduct rules, PvP limits, or required behavior.
- World policy: Explain planned resets, permanence, or any unusual progression rule.
- Mods and client expectations: State whether specific mods or a particular mod set is required.
- Schedule and contact: Include an active time zone or a way to find the community if that information is important.
Use <br> where a visual line break improves scanning. For example:
"ServerDescription": "Relaxed cooperative survival.<br>PvE only; new players welcome.<br>Community events on weekends."The official reference confirms VTML support but does not prescribe a maximum description length or a fixed copy format. Keep the text as short as possible while retaining the facts a newcomer needs.
JSON and VTML pitfalls
Unescaped quotation marks
A value such as "Join the "Builders" group" breaks JSON because the inner quotation marks terminate the string. Escape embedded quotation marks with a backslash:
"ServerDescription": "Join the "Builders" group."Smart quotes and copied punctuation
Some rich-text editors replace straight quotes with curly quotes. JSON requires ordinary double-quote delimiters. If the server fails to load the file after a copy-and-paste operation, replace typographic quotes with straight quotes.
Missing or extra commas
Each property in a JSON object is separated by a comma, except the final property before the closing brace. Do not delete a comma that belongs to the surrounding configuration, and do not add one after the final property if the file format does not contain another entry.

Putting HTML in the value
The documented formatting mechanism is VTML. Use supported markup such as <br> rather than assuming arbitrary HTML tags will render in the listing.
Leaving ServerDescription as null
null is a valid generated value, but it does not provide a custom public description. Replace it with a quoted string when you want listing text.

Confirm the change after restart
- Wait for the server to finish starting rather than checking while it is still loading.
- Open the public server listing from a client that can see the server.
- Check the spelling, capitalization, spaces, and line breaks in both fields.
- Verify that the description is the listing text, not the separate join message.
- If you changed the file while another server process was running, stop that process, save again, and restart the correct instance.
A client may retain an old listing briefly. Refresh the listing or reconnect after confirming that the intended server process loaded the edited configuration.

The old text is still displayed
- Confirm that you edited the active instance’s
serverconfig.json, not a backup or a different world directory. - Check that the server was restarted after saving the file.
- Refresh the public listing and verify from a client that can see the same server.
- Look for a second configuration file created by a separate installation or hosting instance.
The server will not start after editing
- Restore the backup copy to return to the last known-good configuration.
- Inspect the changed lines for unmatched quotes, missing commas, or accidental characters outside the string.
- Ensure that any quotation marks inside the text are escaped and that the file remains valid JSON.
- Reapply the name and description one at a time so the problematic change can be identified.
The command is rejected
- Run the command from the server console or an account with administrator rights.
- Use the documented command names exactly:
/serverconfig nameand/serverconfig description. - Keep each command on one line and place the complete value after the command keyword.
- If the command succeeds but the listing does not update, refresh the listing and allow the server state to propagate before checking again.
Formatting appears as plain text
Use the documented VTML syntax, including <br>, and check that the characters were entered inside the description value. Do not assume that unsupported HTML or malformed markup will be interpreted.
Open to LAN caveat
An Open to LAN server can be configured in a way similar to a dedicated server, but the client overrides some settings, including the save-file location. That means a change made in a file you expect to control may not determine the final behavior of an Open to LAN session. When testing this setup, identify which client is hosting the session and verify the displayed listing from another client.

Which method should you use?
Choose serverconfig.json when you have file access, want a repeatable configuration, or need to edit several settings together. Choose /serverconfig when you have administrator access and want to make a quick listing change without opening the file. For Open to LAN, account for the client-side overrides before assuming a file edit will control every setting.
