This guide shows how to configure each layer, choose the least disruptive control for a problem, and document decisions while staying within Twitch policy.
What effective Twitch chat moderation looks like
Good moderation is not a single switch. Channel Rules tell people what your community expects. AutoMod and blocked terms screen content before it reaches the conversation. Chat modes control who can speak or how quickly they can post. Moderators then apply judgment when context matters.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Keep those functions distinct. A rule is an expectation, not proof that everyone will comply. A filter can catch a slur but misunderstand a quoted lyric. A timeout can stop an incident without permanently removing a viewer. Your team needs a repeatable process that connects all three layers.
Twitch’s Channel Rules feature shows rules to first-time viewers when they click the chat box. Viewers must agree before typing, so the rules are visible at the moment participation begins. Twitch still expects streamers to make a good-faith effort to moderate; publishing rules does not transfer that responsibility to viewers.

Write rules viewers can understand and moderators can enforce
Use observable behavior, not vague values
Write what a moderator can actually see in a message or action. “Stay on topic during gameplay,” “do not target or threaten other people,” and “no repeated messages or unsolicited links” are enforceable. “Be nice” is a worthwhile goal but gives a moderator no consistent threshold for action.
State what happens when a rule is broken. For example, a first incident may receive a reminder, repeated disruption may receive a timeout, and threats, hateful conduct, or ban evasion may result in a ban and a report to Twitch. Make clear that moderators can remove messages and act immediately when safety requires it.
Keep the list short enough to read
Most viewers will scan rules on a phone while joining a live conversation. Put the highest-value expectations first:
Recommended Free Tools
- Stay on the stream’s topic and avoid derailing conversations.
- Do not harass, threaten, target, or expose another person’s private information.
- No spam, repeated messages, unsolicited advertising, or disruptive links.
- Respect moderator instructions; ask questions about a decision calmly after the stream.
- Do not post hateful or sexually explicit material.
Use your own wording and examples for recurring problems in your community, but do not suggest that channel rules override Twitch’s Community Guidelines. Platform policy applies even when a local rule is silent.
Publish rules where new chatters see them
In your channel’s moderation settings, open Channel Rules, add the short version, and save it. Twitch presents the rules when a first-time viewer clicks the chat box and requires agreement before that viewer can type. Review the displayed text in a logged-out or new-account view when possible so you know line breaks and emphasis are understandable.
Pin a shorter reminder in chat or panels for returning viewers, but do not create conflicting versions. If a temporary event has extra restrictions, announce the change before enabling it and explain when normal chat will return.
Set a screening baseline before you go live
Configure AutoMod by category
AutoMod holds potentially inappropriate messages for a streamer or moderator to approve or deny before they appear publicly. Twitch provides four levels across discrimination, sexual content, hostility, and profanity categories; Twitch manages the underlying dictionary. Start at a level your team can review during a busy stream, then adjust after observing held messages and false positives.

A high setting is not automatically safer. If legitimate discussion is held constantly and moderators approve most messages, viewers may stop participating. If abusive messages repeatedly pass through, raise the relevant category rather than increasing every category indiscriminately. Keep a written note of changes so the team knows why a level moved.
Add channel-specific blocked terms
Blocked terms let you filter names, phrases, or subjects that are uniquely harmful to your community. Add common spellings, spacing variations, and coded versions of a slur or harassment phrase. Wildcards can catch variants, so test a term against ordinary words before enabling it.
Twitch lets blocked terms be public or private. Use private status for terms involving personally identifiable information that you do not want exposed to moderators. A private list can also prevent viewers from learning exactly how to evade a filter.
Use permitted terms carefully
Permitted terms can reduce a known false positive, such as a game title or character name that resembles a blocked phrase. Treat an allow entry as a narrow exception, not a blanket exemption: other prohibited language or another blocked term can still cause a message to be held.
When you add an exception, test several sentences around it. If a term has both harmless and abusive meanings, prefer human review or a more specific phrase instead of permitting the shortest version.
Screen links and other recurring spam
If link spam is the issue, enable the channel’s hyperlink blocking option and tell viewers which links are allowed, if any. A filter that blocks every URL can also stop useful resources, so provide an approved alternative such as a command or a panel link. For repeated copy-paste messages, combine blocked terms with Unique Chat rather than escalating directly to permanent bans.
Build a human moderation team
Give moderators defined responsibilities
Moderators can welcome newcomers, answer routine questions, model the desired tone, review AutoMod holds, delete messages, and apply timeouts or bans. Assign enough people to cover the stream’s busiest periods; a filter that nobody reviews is only a queue of delayed decisions.

Use Mod View to bring moderation widgets together, including held-message review and a view of team actions. Before a stressful incident, agree on which behavior receives a reminder, a timeout, or a ban. Decide who handles suspected ban evasion, who communicates with the streamer, and when a moderator should stop engaging and report instead.
Create a simple escalation ladder
- Clarify: For an accidental or ambiguous issue, post a short reminder that names the rule without embarrassing the person.
- Remove: Delete the message when leaving it visible would continue the harm or invite pile-ons.
- Timeout: Temporarily stop participation when a viewer continues after a reminder or is disrupting the conversation.
- Ban: Remove access when conduct is severe, repeated, threatening, hateful, or clearly intended to evade prior action.
- Report: Preserve relevant evidence and report conduct that may violate Twitch-wide policy.
The ladder is a guide, not a requirement to warn someone before acting. A credible threat, doxxing attempt, or hateful attack can justify immediate removal and a report.
Separate channel action from platform enforcement
A timeout or ban controls participation in your channel. It does not decide whether Twitch will suspend an account across the service. Viewers can report Community Guidelines violations to Twitch for possible platform action, and your team should use that route when conduct extends beyond a local disagreement.
“Streamers are expected to use channel moderators and the tools we provide, such as AutoMod , chat timeouts and bans, to mitigate hateful conduct in their channel.”
This is Twitch’s wording in its Community Guidelines. The same guidance says Twitch considers a streamer’s good-faith moderation efforts when third-party abuse appears on a channel; using the available tools and retaining useful evidence helps demonstrate that effort.

Choose the least restrictive control that solves the problem
Different controls act on different audiences and at different moments. Compare them by who is affected, what they prevent, when they act, the participation friction they create, and the workload they leave for moderators.
| Control | Who it affects | What it addresses | When it acts | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AutoMod | Messages that match selected categories | Potentially inappropriate or offensive content | Before public display; held for review | False positives create a review queue |
| Blocked terms | Messages containing your chosen words or phrases | Channel-specific slurs, spoilers, personal information, or spam | Before public display; subject to other filters | Variants require maintenance; broad terms can block harmless speech |
| Slow mode | Most chatters; moderators can generally continue | Rapid message volume | At posting time, requiring a wait between messages | Slows legitimate conversation |
| Unique Chat | Chatters posting repeated text | Copy-paste and repeated-message spam | Before repeated messages appear | Legitimate repeated commands or celebrations may be suppressed |
| Follower-only mode | Viewers who have not followed for the selected duration | Raids, drive-by abuse, and sudden anonymous participation | At participation time | New viewers must follow and wait if a duration is set |
| Subscriber-only mode | Non-subscribers; subscribers, VIPs, and moderators can participate | Severe disruption when you need a smaller trusted audience | At participation time | Excludes casual viewers; availability can depend on channel status |
| Emote-only mode | Chatters using text | Text spam during a short disruption | At posting time | Removes ordinary explanations and questions |
| Non-moderator chat delay | Messages from people who are not moderators | Fast-moving abuse that moderators need time to remove | Holds messages for 2, 4, or 6 seconds before display | Conversation feels less immediate |
| Email or phone verification | Accounts meeting the requirement you choose | Throwaway-account abuse | Before eligible users can chat | Adds sign-in and privacy friction |
Control message volume with Slow Mode
Slow Mode requires a wait between messages. Use it when the chat is moving too quickly for people to read or for moderators to review, not as a punishment for one person. Announce the interval and explain that the setting is temporary if the stream normally runs unrestricted.

Stop copy-paste floods with Unique Chat
Unique Chat prevents repeated messages from appearing. It is useful for raids, giveaway phrases, and bot-like repetition. If a legitimate command is being blocked, tell viewers the accepted format or temporarily disable the setting after the flood ends.
Restrict participation during a raid or acute disruption
Follower-only mode can require viewers to have followed for a selected duration before chatting. A short requirement can slow a sudden attack while still allowing new viewers to join later; a long requirement creates a larger barrier for genuine newcomers.

Use Non-Moderator Chat Delay as a review window
A non-moderator delay can hold messages for 2, 4, or 6 seconds, giving moderators time to remove abusive text before it appears. It is best for a team that is actively watching chat. If no one is reviewing the queue, the delay only makes normal conversation feel late.
Switch to Emote-Only mode for a narrow emergency
Emote-only mode limits messages to emotes. It can keep a chat readable during a short spam burst, but it also prevents people from explaining a problem or asking for help. State why it is enabled, keep the duration short, and restore ordinary chat once the incident is contained.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use verification without surprising legitimate viewers
Twitch supports email and/or phone verification for all accounts, first-time chatters, accounts under selected ages, or users who have followed for less than a selected duration. VIPs, subscribers, and moderators can be exempt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Twitch also says channel bans can extend to other accounts tied to the same verified phone number or email. Consider that consequence when choosing exemptions and when explaining a ban to your team. Do not ask moderators to collect or publish verification details in chat.
Moderate a live incident step by step
Before the stream
- Open Channel Rules and confirm the published text still matches the community you are hosting.
- Check AutoMod levels, blocked terms, permitted terms, link blocking, and the current chat mode.
- Open Mod View and confirm which moderators are present and who is reviewing held messages.
- Remind the team of the escalation ladder and the person responsible for reporting serious conduct.
When disruption starts
- Identify the pattern: risky content, rapid volume, repeated text, unwanted links, or suspected ban evasion.
- Use the narrowest control that addresses it. For example, enable Unique Chat for repetition before restricting every viewer with subscriber-only mode.
- Post a short explanation of the temporary setting and, if useful, its expected duration.
- Delete harmful messages, timeout or ban accounts according to the agreed standard, and avoid prolonged public arguments.
- Review AutoMod holds and Ban Evasion Detection signals. Twitch says likely evaders are restricted by default and possible evaders are placed in Active Monitoring by default; moderators can inspect the signals and take further action.
After the incident
- Turn off temporary modes when the chat is stable, or state why a longer restriction remains.
- Record the time, account, visible behavior, action taken, and relevant message or clip in a private moderation log.
- Check whether the event exposed a filter gap, a false positive, or an unclear rule.
- Update the rule, blocked term, AutoMod category, or team guidance only after discussing the evidence with the streamer and moderators.
Document decisions and keep enforcement consistent
A private log prevents different moderators from treating the same conduct as unrelated incidents. Record observable facts rather than labels: quote the message when safe, note whether the person had been warned, identify the control used, and record who made the decision. Restrict access to the log and avoid copying personal information that is not needed.
Review a sample of timeouts, bans, and AutoMod approvals together. Look for uneven treatment of regulars and newcomers, rules that are impossible to interpret, or filters that hold ordinary discussion. Consistency does not mean identical action in every context; it means that comparable behavior is evaluated against the same stated standard.
What Twitch’s transparency figures do—and do not—tell you
Twitch’s H2 2024 Transparency Report says 97.04% of messages were in channels with channel moderators or AutoMod during that reporting period. It records 65,009,538 proactively removed messages and 17,443,647 manually removed messages in H2 2024.
Those are platform-wide, period-specific figures, not a guarantee for an individual channel and not current 2026 counts. They also do not isolate the effect of one tool. Use your own held-message queue, false-positive rate, response time, and repeat-offender log to decide whether your configuration is working.
Troubleshoot common moderation failures
AutoMod holds too many harmless messages
Review which category caused the hold, lower only that category if your team can safely do so, and add a narrowly written permitted term for a recurring false positive. Do not permit a broad word when a specific phrase will solve the problem.
Abusive messages appear before a moderator can act
Add or refine a blocked term, increase the relevant AutoMod category, and consider a 2-, 4-, or 6-second non-moderator delay while the team is present. If the attack is fast-moving, combine a delay with Slow Mode or Follower-only mode rather than relying on one filter.
New viewers complain that chat is closed
Check whether Follower-only, Subscriber-only, Emote-only, or verification is still enabled. Explain the reason in the stream title, overlay, or chat announcement, and remove the restriction when the problem has passed. A control that solved yesterday’s raid may be unnecessary today.
A banned viewer returns with another account
Review Ban Evasion Detection signals and the account’s visible behavior; Twitch says likely evaders are restricted by default and possible evaders enter Active Monitoring by default. Apply your channel standard, document the decision, and report conduct that may violate Twitch policy rather than attempting to investigate private identity details.
Moderators disagree during a crisis
Use the previously agreed escalation ladder, designate one person to make the final channel decision, and move the debate out of public chat. Afterward, review the incident and clarify the rule that caused the disagreement.
Quick Recap
A practical review checklist
- Rules are short, observable, and consistent with Twitch’s Community Guidelines.
- First-time viewers see the rules and must agree before typing.
- AutoMod categories match the audience and the team can review held messages.
- Blocked terms, private terms, permitted terms, and wildcard behavior have been tested.
- Moderators know who reviews holds and what merits a reminder, timeout, ban, or report.
- Temporary chat modes are explained and removed when no longer necessary.
- Verification requirements and exemptions are disclosed before viewers try to participate.
- Actions and recurring filter problems are recorded in a private log.
- Serious or hateful conduct is reported to Twitch when appropriate; a channel ban alone is not platform enforcement.
