To change color depth on Xbox One, open Settings > Display & Sound > Video Output, then choose Color Depth under Video Fidelity & Overscan. Select a value supported by your TV or monitor; the highest number is not automatically the best choice.
Change the Xbox One color-depth setting
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide, then open Settings.
- Go to Display & Sound > Video Output.
- Under Video Fidelity & Overscan, open Color Depth.
- Select a value supported by the connected TV or monitor.

What do 24-, 30-, and 36-bit color depth mean?
The setting describes the color depth of the video signal. Xbox One guidance labels 24 bits per pixel as 8-bit, 30 bits as 10-bit, and 36 bits as 12-bit. The documented Xbox One S walkthrough lists 24-bit and 30-bit choices. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit test-bench configurations include a 24-bit Xbox One, a 30-bit Xbox One S, and a 36-bit Xbox One X; these are device test configurations, not a recommendation for every owner (Microsoft Xbox Game Development Kit, updated September 15, 2026).
Which color depth should you choose?
Choose the option your display documents as supported over the HDMI input you are using. The available guidance does not establish one best setting for every TV or monitor, and selecting a higher value alone does not guarantee a better picture. If you are unsure, start with a supported setting and return to the previous value if the display rejects the signal or the image becomes unstable.

Color depth, 4K, and HDR on Xbox One
Color depth is only one part of video output compatibility. Xbox Wire identifies Xbox One S and Xbox One X as the Xbox One-family models with 4K/HDR support; the original Xbox One is not identified as supporting those features in that guidance. Xbox One S supports 4K video and Blu-ray playback, but not games rendered in 4K. For HDR on Xbox One S, the TV must support HDR10 and the content must be HDR-encoded. See Xbox Wire’s Xbox One S 4K and HDR overview.

If 4K or HDR is still unavailable
- Open the console’s 4K TV Details screen and check which features the console detects.
- Set TV detection to automatic, then confirm the Xbox is connected to an HDMI port that supports the format you want.
- Check the television’s own settings for an enhanced-color, HDR, or similar option. Port names and setting labels vary by manufacturer, so consult the TV manual.
- Try the HDMI cable supplied with the Xbox One S or Xbox One X, if available. Xbox Wire recommends a High Speed HDMI cable for 4K UHD; a cable check is relevant to 4K connectivity, not a requirement for changing color depth. See Xbox Wire’s setup guidance.
