In OBS Studio, open Settings → Output, switch Output Mode to Advanced, select the encoder under Streaming, then enter any custom options in that encoder’s custom-options field—if it provides one. Use only options documented for the encoder you selected: there is no universal parameter string that works across NVENC, x264, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync, and FFmpeg.

Before adding a custom encoder option

“Extra encoder parameters” here means custom options in OBS Studio. Option names and accepted values depend on your OBS version, operating system, selected encoder, installed hardware and drivers, codec, and streaming service. First identify the active encoder; an option documented for NVIDIA NVENC should not be assumed to work with another implementation.

  • Record your OBS version and operating system.
  • Note the encoder and codec selected for streaming.
  • Identify the streaming destination and check its current requirements for codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval.
  • Decide which setting you need to change. Prefer OBS’s built-in controls for common settings such as bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval.

OBS documents separate encoder implementations and compatibility considerations for hardware encoding; the encoder choices available to you vary by system.

Where custom options go in OBS

  1. Open Settings → Output.
  2. Set Output Mode to Advanced.
  3. Open the Streaming settings and select the encoder you intend to use.
  4. Look for the custom-options field within that encoder’s settings. Not every encoder or output path exposes the same field.
  5. Enter only properties supported by that encoder, using its documented spelling, value format, and separators.
  6. Apply the changes. If the output needs reinitializing, stop and restart the stream or output, then review the OBS log and verify the result in your actual setup.

Do not assume a setting worked merely because OBS accepted the text. The OBS documentation does not establish one validation procedure that applies to every encoder and configuration.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Use the syntax for the selected encoder

NVENC in OBS 31.0 and later

The OBS Project’s Advanced NVENC Options (31.0) page documents custom properties as option=value pairs separated by spaces. For example, the general form is option=value anotherOption=value; the property names and values must still be valid for NVENC and your chosen rate-control mode.

OBS documents keyint as a keyframe interval measured in frames and explicitly labels it “Not a standard NVENC option.” The page also documents gopLength, with a note to use keyint except for the special infinite-GOP case. Other listed properties include averageBitRate and maxBitRate; their relevance depends on rate-control mode. Consult the current NVENC option list before adding a property rather than copying an arbitrary string.

AMF and FFmpeg options

OBS’s AMF/FFmpeg interface describes an option=value field and uses level=5.2 profile=main as an example of its syntax. That example demonstrates formatting, not a recommended streaming configuration. Check the documentation for the specific encoder and output mode you selected; the AMF/FFmpeg field is not evidence that NVENC or x264 accepts the same options.

x264, Quick Sync, and other encoders

OBS also supports x264 and, where the system permits, hardware encoder paths such as Intel Quick Sync and Apple VideoToolbox. Their available controls and custom options are implementation-specific. OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide illustrates that suggested settings differ between NVENC, x264, AMD, and Quick Sync, but it is a recording guide—not a universal live-streaming recipe.

Choose settings for the service and workload

Custom parameters should solve a defined compatibility or performance need, not be added just because a string appears in a guide. Check the streaming service’s current requirements, then consider the encoder, codec, rate-control behavior, keyframe or GOP behavior, available bitrate, and CPU or GPU load together.

NVIDIA’s NVENC streaming example

NVIDIA’s NVENC OBS Guide recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, P6 preset, High Quality tuning, and two-pass quarter-resolution multipass for the NVENC workflow it describes. These are NVIDIA’s recommendations for that workflow, not settings that automatically suit every encoder or platform. NVIDIA notes that services may limit keyframe intervals and that high GPU utilization can be a reason to turn off look-ahead.

The same guide identifies a 6000 Kbps Twitch bitrate maximum. Platform limits can change, so check Twitch’s current guidance before relying on that figure. NVIDIA also discusses H.264, HEVC, AV1, and HDR choices; do not enable HDR unless the service, capture pipeline, display, and encoder all support it.

Hardware and operating-system support

NVENC, AMD AMF, Quick Sync, and Apple VideoToolbox have different hardware and operating-system requirements; they will not all appear on every computer. OBS’s hardware encoding notes describe compatibility, including platform and hardware-generation considerations. Confirm support for your own system before choosing an encoder or troubleshooting a missing option.

Troubleshooting custom parameters

  • The options field is missing: Confirm you are in Settings → Output with Output Mode set to Advanced, and check the settings exposed by the selected encoder. Another encoder or output mode may have a different interface.
  • OBS rejects an option or the stream fails to start: Verify the exact property spelling and value format against documentation for the active encoder and OBS version. Remove the custom option and restart output to see whether the failure clears; add supported options back one at a time.
  • A setting appears to have no effect: Check whether that property applies to the chosen rate-control mode, codec, or output path. Prefer the matching built-in OBS control when one exists.
  • The service reports a keyframe or bitrate problem: Check the service’s current requirements and set the corresponding built-in control where available. Do not copy a keyframe value from another platform or encoder without confirming its units and meaning.
  • Encoding performance worsens: Revisit the encoder’s preset and workload. NVIDIA specifically notes that GPU utilization can make disabling look-ahead appropriate in its NVENC workflow; that advice does not automatically transfer to other encoders.
  • An encoder is unavailable: Check OBS’s compatibility notes for your hardware and operating system, and verify that relevant drivers and OBS are current.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a YouTube live stream, rather than configure a local encoder for a live camera or gameplay feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.

  • Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; the Monthly price is $9.99 per month.

Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo or plan details, then start your free first day.
