Run FFmpeg as the foreground process in a systemd service, set Restart=on-failure for unexpected failures, and choose a deliberate RestartSec= delay. This lets systemd relaunch FFmpeg when its exit matches the policy. It does not, by itself, prove that YouTube has resumed a healthy public stream: verify the result in YouTube Live Control Room.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
systemd supervises the process started by a service. If FFmpeg exits in a way covered by the service’s restart policy, systemd can start it again. That is process recovery, not a guarantee that the input, credentials, network connection, or YouTube broadcast will work on the next attempt.
A stream can also have output trouble while FFmpeg remains running. A service restart policy responds to process exits and other qualifying service failures; it is not a general repair mechanism for every streaming problem. Diagnose why FFmpeg exited before relying on repeated restarts.
Choose the restart policy and retry delay
Restart=on-failure for unexpected failures
For a stream intended to keep running, Restart=on-failure is usually the deliberate starting point: systemd retries after qualifying failures, including a non-zero exit, qualifying signals, operation timeouts, or watchdog timeouts. See the systemd.service manual for the documented behavior and details about excluded signals.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use Restart=always only if clean exits should also restart
A clean exit is different from a failure. Choose Restart=always only when the service should restart after clean exits as well as failures. An intentional administrative systemctl stop remains a stop; a restart policy is not meant to undo an operator’s explicit stop.
Set a deliberate RestartSec=
RestartSec= sets the wait before a restart attempt. Avoid a tight retry loop, especially when a persistent fault would make every attempt fail. There is no universal delay for every stream: choose one appropriate to the failure mode and service, and check the installed systemd manual for local behavior.

Create a systemd service for FFmpeg
The example below shows the unit’s shape, not a ready-to-run FFmpeg command. Replace the bracketed placeholders with your actual input, encoding and output options, executable path, and YouTube Live output details. The 10s delay is illustrative only, not a universal recommendation.
[Unit]
Description=YouTube FFmpeg live stream
[Service]
Type=simple
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [input and encoding options] -f flv [YouTube Live output URL using a protected stream key]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Keep FFmpeg in the foreground
Put the FFmpeg invocation directly in ExecStart=. Do not wrap it in a shell background job: systemd should supervise the process whose exit you need it to detect. Confirm the FFmpeg executable path and command syntax on your host, and test the exact command interactively before putting it under systemd.

Protect the stream key
YouTube’s encoder setup uses a Live server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not put a real key in a published example, source repository, or logs. Use a protected configuration method appropriate for your host, and ensure the resulting command gives FFmpeg access to the key without exposing it unnecessarily. Follow YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.
Check start-rate limiting
Repeated failures can run into systemd’s start-rate limits. On releases that support the relevant names, inspect StartLimitIntervalSec= and StartLimitBurst= behavior in the installed systemd.service and systemd.unit manuals. A persistent fault may cause attempts to repeat and then be rate-limited; increasing retry frequency is not a fix for a bad input, invalid key, or broken command.

Load the unit and verify the broadcast
- Save the unit. Store the service definition in the appropriate systemd unit location for your host, using a name such as
youtube-stream.service. Local conventions and permissions vary by system. - Reload and start it. After editing a unit, reload the systemd manager configuration, then start or restart the service so it uses the changed definition. For a unit named
youtube-stream.service, the usual commands aresudo systemctl daemon-reloadandsudo systemctl restart youtube-stream.service. Enable it at boot only if that is your intended operating behavior. - Inspect service state and logs. Use
systemctl status youtube-stream.serviceandjournalctl -u youtube-stream.serviceto check whether FFmpeg is running, what exit status it returned, whether retries occurred, and whether systemd reports start-rate limiting. - Check YouTube separately. In YouTube Live Control Room, inspect the stream preview, health notices, encoder connection details, and messages. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during an event; its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance describes those checks. A running FFmpeg process is not proof that the public broadcast is healthy.
Troubleshoot restart attempts that do not restore the stream
FFmpeg exits immediately every time
- Likely issue: an invalid command, unavailable input, incorrect local path, unusable encoding options, or a persistent connection problem.
- What to do: run the exact FFmpeg command interactively with credentials protected. Read the error before changing restart settings; systemd cannot make a failing command succeed.
The service starts, fails repeatedly, then stops retrying
- Likely issue: a persistent failure has triggered systemd’s start-rate limiting.
- What to do: inspect
systemctl status,journalctl -ufor the unit, and the installed manuals for start-rate settings. Fix the cause of failure before deciding whether the retry delay or applicable limits need adjustment.
FFmpeg restarts, but YouTube is not live
- Likely issue: the process restarted but the encoder did not establish a healthy connection, or YouTube reports a stream issue.
- What to do: check Live Control Room’s preview and health messages, then verify the configured server URL and stream key. Keep the key private while inspecting the configuration.
Changing the unit has no effect
- Likely issue: systemd is still using the previously loaded unit configuration, or the edited file is not the unit being started.
- What to do: reload the manager configuration, restart the intended unit, and inspect its status and logs. Check the effective service definition and your host’s installed systemd manuals; upstream documentation may describe a newer release than the one deployed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded video playing 24/7, StreamNeo is a managed alternative to supervising FFmpeg on your own Linux host. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops uploaded video in the cloud, at the quality uploaded up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot. It also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not live camera input.
